I've tried using kaffe-1.06, jdk-1.1.8, and linux-jdk-1.3, all without success. linux-jdk-1.3 runs at least, but it never succeeds in making a network connection. To install linux-jdk-1.3 I did a make install form ports, changed jre/lib/jvm.cfg to have -classic on top, and used the .java_wrapper from http://people.freebsd.org/~patrick/sunjdk/java_wrapper. Any advice appreciated. At some point it didn't work for me because I had JAVA_COMPILER set in the environment pointing to JIT for FreeBSD jdk 1.1.8 which obviousely did not work with Linux. However if you want to get a good performance I recommend installing JDK 1.3 for Linux. It seems a lot faster. BTW, a question on topic of Linux 1.3: would applying patches for Linux IBM JDK help to run Linux JDK in -hotspot mode? It seems to be a lot faster than -classic (until it crashes that is). Or is it just me perception? If you want kernel threads, you have to pick an operating system other than FreeBSD. >It seems to be a lot >faster than -classic (until it crashes that is). Or is it just me >perception? It depends on your application. For sustained execution, -server is about 25x faster than -classic. Also, -server is about 5x faster than OpenJIT (which is about the best you can do under FreeBSD). OpenJIT works for sure with Linux JDK 1.3, and most likely with 1.2. It can also be compiled using the linux-dev port (to get a more recent version). -Michael Robinson To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message
