The "no media present" error can only occur if the MII_BMSR register in the PHY has no media types specified, but the generic mii code is supposed to ignore such PHYs entirely. Something must be causing access to the PHY registers to fail either before or after the OUI is read successfully. If possible, could you try the following patch against an unmodified dev/ed/? This causes the ed driver to probe the miibus but ignore it after that, and output to the console the result of each mii register access. Hopefully that output will provide some hints as to when the PHY isn't responding. Hmm, I forgot to tell you a step. :-P Is this kernel compiled with debug symbols? (Use config -g or 'makeoptions DEBUG=-g'.) If it is, you can do 'gdb -k kernel.debug' in the /sys/compile/FOO directory, and then do 'l ukphy_service+0x48' (or maybe 'l *ukphy_service+0x48', whichever works) to get the source line it died at. > -Jim -- John Baldwin -- http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ PGP Key: http://www.baldwin.cx/~john/pgpkey.asc "Power Users Use the Power to Serve!" - http://www.FreeBSD.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Mon Oct 29 2:38:20 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from tomts19-srv.bellnexxia.net (tomts19.bellnexxia.net [209.226.175.73]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D382737B405 for ; Mon, 29 Oct 2001 02:38:01 -0800 (PST) Received: from TMA-1.brad-x.com ([64.228.82.194]) by tomts19-srv.bellnexxia.net (InterMail vM.4.01.03.16 201-229-121-116-20010115) with ESMTP id <20011029103800.LOSR4828.tomts19-srv.bellnexxia.net@TMA-1.brad-x.com> for ; Mon, 29 Oct 2001 05:38:00 -0500 Received: from localhost (localhost.brad-x.com [127.0.0.1]) by TMA-1.brad-x.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2F3027B0C1 for ; Mon, 29 Oct 2001 05:38:32 -0500 (EST) Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 05:38:32 -0500 (EST) From: Brad Laue To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Inspiron 4100/8100? Nothing major, it's just that both the ed0 and wi0 devices are added as if they are sio devices :-) I haven't seen anything in UPDATING or on the various MLs that may be related, so I hope this is not one of those "yes-we-know" things. First a diff between a "good" dmesg(1) and a "bad" dmesg(1) output; followed by some more details. Both have the ed0 device as the network interface, but the same happens with the wi0 device. If someone knows what's going on, let me know. Otherwise I either hang on to the working version, or if I feel up to it, try to get to the bottom of it. I don't know. However, having debugged this in the FreeBSD 2.2, I can say with some assurance that the TP BIOS refuses to allow the hibernation to occur. Windows may be using an IBM specific APM command to cause it to work, but since it's undocumented, there's no way for FreeBSD to use it. Yes, it's a known problem. I imagine that it also generate two beeps if you type FnF4, one normal one and a lower pitched one. If this is the case, it's a TP BIOS issue and FreeBSD can't do anything about it. It is possible, even likely, that one of the many APM options in BIOS might work around this, but I've never tried to track it down. I say that I assume it can be fixed only because Windows DOES hibernate on AC with the network card in. It should be noted that changes to BIOS made with the GUI TP Configuration Utility can somehow make changes that work for Windows but have no effect for FreeBSD. Changes made with ps2 seem to always work for FreeBSD. It may also be worth noting that about half of all the ps2 options relate to APM. Happy hunting. R. Any software needed for it? here is my heuristic. 1. does the phone require extra sw installed to work with a windoze box? this is not a good sign. 2. does the sw do nothing but add a new entry in the serial list? this is a good sign that counteracts the effects of item 1. this is the case with the SprintPCS Wireless Web Connectivity Kit. They used to sell the kit for us$95.00, now they sell it for us$55.00. sanyo sells the serial cable for my phone for us$50.00 so, if it's just supposed to work without any special installation. than you should be fine, other than the fact that you will learn alot about your FreeBSD serial port before you can get hooked up > Unfortunately, have not found GRPS mentioned in this list... > > Thanks, > Alex > > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message > -- John L. I'm waiting for Søren to review it - he is concerned (quite rightly!) that any changes to the ata probe code might break support for some hardware that currently works fine - so it may be some time before the patch gets committed. If there is a temp key it is used if not the permanent key is. Actually, the default has nothing to do with the program you use to view it. It's a driver attribute. ancontrol will probably just lose support for functionality covered by ifconfig in 5.0. The behavior will not change in 4.x. -- Brooks --=20 Any statement of the form "X is the one, true Y" is FALSE. HTML tends to annoy many. As to your problem, you need to provide quite a bit more information: 1. "uname -a" output (FreeBSD version information) The code for PCMCIA cards has changed radically over the past few months. 2. Kernel config file 3. /etc/rc.conf file 4. /etc/pccard.conf file (if any) 5. Output of "dmesg" showing the boot and device probes. 4. Output of "pccardc dumpcis SLOT" where SLOT is 0 or 1 depending on the slot into which the card is inserted. (In you case I don't expect anything.) 5. Specific information on what card you are using. (Note: FreeBSD does not yet support CardBus (32-bit) cards. If the card is not marked as 16 or 32 bit, look at the metal strip on the connector. If it's smooth, it's probably 16 bit. If it has evenly spaced bumps, it's probably CardBus. CardBus support is coming in V5 and maybe sooner, but it's not there at this time. You should not have pcic devices but you should have card devices (/dev/card0, /dev/card1, etc.). R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. As vanilla as they come. In a previous thread, I described how a bit of pccard.conf mumbo jumbo made it possible for me to get both cards up and running in 4.3-RELEASE. It was explained to me that pccard.conf is deprecated, and that two pcmcia nics should "just work". I then asked how to do it the old way, and it was suggested: >Set the following sysctls at boot time: >hw.pcic.intr_path="1" >hw.pcic.irq="0" Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem - the second 3com pcmica card still produces the dreaded "no card in database for null null" even though it is identical to the first card that comes up just fine. I have _no preference_ about doing this with the deprecated pccard.conf method, or whatever, but I need to be able to use two 3com 3C589 cards in freeBSD 4.4. Anyone have any ideas how to get this working ? thanks, Joesh _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Thu Nov 1 19:58:24 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from ishmael.flashlightmedia.net (025-164.colo.ny.np1.net [64.61.25.164]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3D04337B416 for ; Thu, 1 Nov 2001 19:58:21 -0800 (PST) Received: (from mail_tunnel@localhost) by ishmael.flashlightmedia.net (8.11.4/8.11.4) id fA23wJA40241 for freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG; Thu, 1 Nov 2001 22:58:19 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from luser@ahab.com) Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2001 22:57:39 -0500 From: JT To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: thinkpad a22e quirks and successes Message-ID: <20011101225739.K1022@zed.unbeat.com> Mail-Followup-To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Success with this machine overall. The interaction of apm, pcm audio, and usb is the trickiest part. I could detail the trials to anyone who cares, but the bottom line is this: XFree86-4 works at 1024x768. Mouse works. Built-in ethernet works (fxp, and nicely as a module). Apm works, including suspend to disk (with appropriate phdisk preparation). USB works. Audio works, but I do a kldunload snd_csa and reload it in /etc/rc.resume. They all work together if you go into the bios config->power->pci power management and set it to "disable", AND use the kernel module versions of audio and usb. I haven't tried pccard yet. There are a lot of oddities regarding the interaction of usb, apm, and audio, and module vs kernel config and pci power management on or off. Some combinations crash the machine on boot, some result in usb or audio not working, etc. I tried twiddling other settings, too, like USB BIOS (a BIOS setting). I can detail cases I tried and test other cases for anyone who is interested. Feel free to email me if particular details of the above interest you. The i8000 (and I think maybe the i4100) can be configured with ATI RAGE Mobility chips, which work quite nicely with X & FreeBSD. I'm using one right now, and 1400x1050 is very nice. They can even swap the video chip for you; I had a friend who didn't get what he ordered & they're swapping his for free, but it might be possible to it for a fee even if you originally ordered the wrong thing. (Nvidia: just say NO.) You also might look into a refurbished i8000 with an ATI chip. I've successfully installed 4.4 over the network, and X works fine, too. However, there are still some problems, and after reading many Web pages and mailing list messages on Vaios I'm fairly confused. It seems that there are a couple of issues for most Vaio models: 1. The PCGA-CD51/A PCMCIA-connected CD-ROM drive (system crashes when the drive is connected) 2. Power management (APM/ACPI) (system doesn't wake up again, unclear if/how suspend-to-disk works) 3. The Jog Dial 4. The Memory Stick reader I'm confused because some people report that everything worked out of the box, while others (including me) are having problems, and while these issues seem to have been discussed frequently I couldn't find any comprehensive information on what would be an optimal setup (FreeBSD version, kernel configuration, etc.) comes close, but seems to be outdated (2000-07-28)--but it reports all components of a Z505 as working. Have I overlooked something? Should it be obvious? Any pointers? If it doesn't exist yet, I would be more than willing to put together a document that describes what has to be done to set up FreeBSD for Vaios (given that the necessary information can be found). The Memory Stick reader The jog dial, memory stick reader and firewire on my Z505HS have never worked and I have no expectation of them working soon under FreeBSD. That's for -CURRENT. You said you installed 4.4, not 5.0. Also, that page is well out of date (many things mentioned there are fixed in -STABLE) and states quite specificly that the memory stick and firewire are not known working. > Have I overlooked something? Should it be obvious? Any pointers? If it The support for the things you're asking about (apart from the cdrom, for which there is a patch in the archives) isn't there. If you want it there, go hack source. Well, it states that Memory Stick and iLink/FireWire weren't _tested_. I couldn't currently test them either, as I don't have a Memory Stick or an iLink device. Anyway, I've just played around (yeah, I know, but I'm not looking for quick fixes, I'm just looking for an overview of the "state of the art" concerning Vaios and maybe _possible_ solutions) with -CURRENT.
