Perhaps not pissing on the developers would be a good idea? This list is to help organize those who are contributing something to the FreeBSD PPC project, not for every PPC owner to join the list and say "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How long till we get there?" while other people are trying to write code. Have a little respect for the people who put the work in to create the software you use or desire to use. Despite the childish nature of your spiteful comment about going to NetBSD, that's a really good idea! NetBSD has a functioning PPC port at the moment. If you want BSD on PPC now, NetBSD is not a bad choice. You can always come back to FreeBSD/PPC when the port is finished. That would certainly be more contructive than what you're doing here. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Benfield" To: "Ben" Sent: Monday, July 01, 2002 8:16 AM Subject: Re: Mailing list > On Tue, Jun 25, 2002 at 01:06:08PM -0500, Ben wrote: > > I would like to know when FreeBSD would be available for ppc. > > yeah, me too. The reason you're not getting much of a response is that there's only myself and one or two others working on this and I personally can't devote my full time to it since I'm doing it in my spare time. We can't give a hard date on when it'll be usable, but we're getting there. I got my iMac to the point where it acquires an NFS root and then keels over trying to start init. What's missing from CVS (I need to get some time to commit it all) is the interrupt handling and device code. I've got drivers for the UniNorth host-pci bridge and the OpenPIC interrupt controller that haven't been committed yet. Once they're in, you should be able to configure up a kernel with the gem driver which will drive the GMAC ethernet chip that's in most current models. I'm booting over the net, not from CD. CD would require ATA and ATA requires a driver for the macio chip which isn't finished yet, and an attachment to macio for the ata driver, which also isn't there yet. =3D) Note that I'm having a problem with the GMAC with a 10/100/1000 PHY not sending frames correctly at the moment. I'm looking in to that. GMAC with a 10/100 PHY is working fine. > Although not a kernel hacker, I wouldn't mind taking a look just to poke > around (we all gotta start somehow). Go for it! The idea was to support anything I could get my hot little hands on. =3D) The easiest PowerPC kit to get is Apple, so that's what I'm targetting first. It's not really designed to compete against MacOS X, it's just a nice proof of concept. I have a non-Apple board to target after I've got the Apple stuff working though. --=20 Benno Rice benno@FreeBSD.org --=-gE1c1MJprMFJVgjgCFS4 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQA9JB7ZXjRwWofFmQkRAk96AJ9g1hcQWAKMK+MCyuNindEKJEJHcQCggStq v7LEHnPi4AfbiOus/7/4SJo= =crY6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-gE1c1MJprMFJVgjgCFS4-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ppc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ppc Fri Jul 5 19:33: 3 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CE43837B400; Fri, 5 Jul 2002 19:33:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (trang.nuxi.com [66.92.13.169]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C5CA43E31; Fri, 5 Jul 2002 19:33:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien@NUXI.com) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (obrien@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.12.5/8.12.2) with ESMTP id g662X1oi013848; Fri, 5 Jul 2002 19:33:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien@dragon.nuxi.com) Received: (from obrien@localhost) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.12.5/8.12.5/Submit) id g662X1B0013847; Fri, 5 Jul 2002 19:33:01 -0700 (PDT) Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2002 19:33:01 -0700 From: "David O'Brien" To: Alexey Zelkin Cc: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Freebsd/powerpc page updated Message-ID: <20020706023301.GA13706@dragon.nuxi.com> Reply-To: obrien@FreeBSD.ORG References: <200207031643.59097.justin@shiningsilence.com> <20020704120457.A11221@phantom.cris.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20020704120457.A11221@phantom.cris.net> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT Organization: The NUXI BSD group X-Pgp-Rsa-Fingerprint: B7 4D 3E E9 11 39 5F A3 90 76 5D 69 58 D9 98 7A X-Pgp-Rsa-Keyid: 1024/34F9F9D5 Sender: owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG On Thu, Jul 04, 2002 at 12:04:57PM +0300, Alexey Zelkin wrote: > IIRC main direction of FreeBSD/ppc port was a powerpc chips support to > get embedded devices in line. However for the PowerPC bits to be useful for embedded people to use, we need to keep them working. Also building cross-toolchains, etc can be a pain. So is tracking down ever PowerPC embedded board -- WindRiver's VxWorks has seperate board-specific code for probably 15 different boards. This is really more than FreeBSD can do (IMHO). So the idea was to provide a working FreeBSD/PowerPC on a reference platform -- which provides a toolkit for embedded application developers to base on. The most consumer workstation-like PowerPC machine is of course the Mac G3/G4. That is why it is targeted.
