I have a HP Pavilion ze4630us that has a NatSemi 10/100 NIC as well as a Broadcom BCM94306 802.11g chip. I've checked out the Hardware Notes for 5.2.1 and not suprisingly (since there isn't even a native linux driver yet) it wasn't on the list. I am able to get the chip working under Linux via ndiswrapper which basically loads the windows driver for it. Is there anything like this available for FreeBSD? I am crossing my fingers, as I don't want to have to reboot to Linux everytime I need to leave my desk and need network access. Is my only alternative purchasing a supported 802.11g PCMCIA card? If so, any recommendations? I'm not sure if ndis came to Linux or FreeBSD first, but it's been available for available for FreeBSD for a while thanks the the efforts of wpaul. If you plan to use it, you probably want to update to CURRENT, although a few laptops are having a problem with some recent pci code, so you get an kernel that does not see your disks (which keeps if from booting) you might be best off updating to about 2004.04.09.15.20.00. This is about 20 mintues before Warner committed the changes . (Most systems had no problems with this patch, but mine did. Hopefully fixed shortly.) See man ndis for information. -- R. I find that when using apm instead of acpi, hibernation does work with Fn-F12 :) So I suppose it is the problem of FreeBSD's acpi... I do not even need apm_enable="YES" or apmd_enable="YES" in rc.conf for hibernation to work (actually I can't have them turned on as they complain about the nonexistence of /dev/apm). Odd. At one time (last fall) I was able to run both the Ethernet and modem on my RBEM56G-100 card just fine. Sometime between then and last month, it stopped working. (RBEM56G-100 is the CardBus version of the REM56G-100 PCCard.) The Ethernet still works, but I really don't need that part. Maybe I should break down and get a PCMCIA modem card, but I'm afraid that I will get stuck with a WinModem. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. Thanks for the hint. For people who don't know the WEP authentication "security", I found some info on it here: http://www.cypherpunks.ca/bh2001/mgp00018.html A paper and additional information about WEP can be found here: http://www.isaac.cs.berkeley.edu/isaac/wep-faq.html Today, I have taken a look at wireless networks for the first time. All I can see is that the design is a complete disaster. Wow! I no longer see the USB failure messages after a suspend. But the USB does not seem to be alive any more. More seriously, my Ethernet is dead after resume. I just get device timeouts on fxp0 after resume. The recent update to the PCI code has changed LOTS of things, but it's clear that things are not really working, yet. Nate posted a very interesting message to acpi@ this morning that touched on many suspend/resume issues, so there is work being done and there is definitely hope. -- R. I can't help with your pcm problem but the problem with usb-devices showing upis propably because you have usbd_enable="YES" in your /etc/rc.conf. It will automatically detect your usb-devives and load the usb* mobules which is needed. There are guys on the wireless equipment list that are getting 60+ miles with off the shelf components. Not just swapping a few files, these are 24/7/365 links. The timing problems are overcome with the software they're using (StarOS, also off the shelf). Put another way, the area equals pi times the radius, squared ... so the number of people who have the theoretical opportunity to passively crack your wireless network increases, dramatically, with each increment of distance from the center. You can pack an awful lot of people into a circle with a radius of 85 miles ... that's 170 miles, diametrically. (I am reminded of the Summer, 2002 release of _2600, the Hacker Quarterly_, where a geospatial diagram of all wireless networks, their estimated locations, estimated field strengths, and encryption (or lack thereof) was displayed on the front cover, as a series of overlapping red (and green) circles, overlaid on a map of Manhattan ... with a little effort, now, it's not unlikely that the guys in the W1AW shack, at the ARRL HQ, in Newington, Connecticut, can pick up the transmissions from Manhattan, too ... along with everyone else, in between. Heh! Marconi would be amused, I hope.) This led to the conception of a whole new distributed networking application; cracking wireless networks by distributing the data across multiple CPUs and working on cracking the key by dividing the search space into smaller pieces that could be searched in parellel. It's only a matter of time. We're still presuming that 85 miles only worked because two directional antennas were aimed at each other. When you're trying to snoop a mostly-omnidirectional antenna, your relevant radius is much smaller. Everything seems to work pretty well, but I can't get the wireless card to work (it's an internal mini-PCI card). Looking through the forum posts, I found I had to set the loader.conf options to hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range=1 This statement was to allow the computer to even boot in order to install 5.2.1. I've scoured the web and this list trying to find possible solutions, but I can't seem to find any answers. The specific error I get by using 'dmesg' is ath0: mem 0xd0200000-0xd020ffff irq 11 at device 13.0 on pci1 ath0: mac 5.6 phy 4.1 5ghz radio 4.6 ath0: unable to collect channel list from hal device_probe_and_attach: ath0 attach returned 22 I checked my kernel to make certain that it was compiled with support for the atheros card. I'm at a total impasse at the moment. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what to do? Can anyone tell me what the returned 22 means? I can't seem to find any documentation on that particular error either. I'd love to get the wireless working properly! Stephen G --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! It's probably worth noting that ndis (Project Evil) is available only in CURRENT (although it can be added to 5.2.1). It is not available on STABLE. Most developers are primarily running CURRENT these days and it's pretty easy to forget that most of the world is afraid to run it as it is clear declared to not be stable. That said, laptop support in CURRENT is vastly better than in STABLE. But laptops vary a LOT and some don't like CURRENT very well. Suspend/resume is a particular problem as it has only recently been addressed seriously as more general ACPI issues are resolved. I have been running CURRENT on my everyday use laptop (IBM T30) for well over a year and it's been running well (except for suspend/resume issues) for some time. But I am now so used to any quirks introduced in CURRENT that I may no longer even notice them. So, if you run CURRENT on your laptop as a new user, you can provide valuable input on rough spots BEFORE V5 is declared STABLE. (Hint, hint.) And I STRONGLY urge you to subscribe to current@ and monitor it if you run CURRENT as there are still times when you really don't want to update unless you are willing to help debug things. -- R. So, if you run CURRENT on > your laptop as a new user, you can provide valuable input on rough > spots BEFORE V5 is declared STABLE. (Hint, hint.) I've gotten a bit frustrated with submitting bug reports on -CURRENT. I understand that the developers want to spend their time developing NEW software and features and that they don't usually want to fix bugs unless the bug effects them personally or they have a particular interest in it. I think -CURRENT has changed too much from -STABLE at this point. I think it's too unstable. I long for 5 stable because I think developers (at least some) will switch focus and begin fixing bugs again. I submitted a ton of bug reports back in Jan 2004 and Feb 2004. Most of them were ignored. I think 5-STABLE will change that. Personally, I think there are three kinds of people who run -CURRENT: 1.) Developers 2.) People who want to play with or NEED the new features. 3.) People who think they are helping the project by submitting bug reports but who can't program, or can't debug hardware/kernel problems (this is me). I think people in category #3 are getting the short end of the stick and will continue to get the short end until 5-STABLE comes out. That's not necessarilly a BAD thing. The developers certainly need to make progress. But 5-STABLE needs to come out SOON (within a few months), IMO. Otherwise I fear that people in category #3 will start going elsewhere. I'm just voicing my personal observation > about the current state of the project. Jessie, Speaking primarily as part of category #3, I see what you mean. But there is a reason that many problem reports have been ignored when they are for laptops. The ACPI code needed to get many new systems to boot at all (especially that needed to boot servers) was the top priority for the developers. It had to be. While it applied to laptops, it left many holes in laptop support where ACPI is utilized for may things not found on servers. Suspend/resume is the most obvious issue. Power management is related, but not quite the same. Now that ACPI is stable for the basic functions, changes to support power functions and suspend/resume are finally starting to show up. On my T30 the improvement in many areas has been tremendous over the past couple of weeks. Just look at the commit logs for stuff in acpica and pci. Nate and Warner have been REALLY busy. I still can't resume cleanly, although it's getting really close to working. USB and sound are now working. Nate is looking at the odd problem of losing all interrupts on IRQ 11 some time after I resume. (This is REALLY weird.) And I still can't get my back-light to turn off while suspended which really limits the value of suspending. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these last issues will be resolved soon and that I will be able to suspend as a normal part of life again. Even though I don't do much programming any more, I do plan on trying to dig through the DSDT and see if I can hack together something that will turn off the !@#$ back-light on this thing. If nothing else, I'll learn a lot about reading and understanding ASL. Odds are that someone will have a solution before I do, though. And it is almost certain that 5 will go STABLE this summer. Only a few significant issues remain. I think that early summer is even a possibility (but I'm an optimist). -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. I included the statement in the loader.conf file because the system would hang just after the cbb0: [MPSAFE] portion of the boot process (perhaps I needed addition statements as well?). I'm not sure if I needed other statements in the loader.conf, but the cardbus problem was (seemingly) fixed with the hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range=1 statement. I've included the entire boot log file. I'm not an expert on exactly what goes on with it, so any help would be greatly appreciated. If this doesn't work with 5.2, I might try 4.9 even though it lacks some of the new features of the 5.x series. Thanks again for the help! Steve G Copyright (c) 1992-2004 The FreeBSD Project.
