But this version of Red Hat Linux is now unsupported, and these RPM's aren't anymore available in Red Hat ftp servers: - atk-1.2.0-2.i386.rpm - glib2-2.2.1-1.i386.rpm Nor they was backed up on FreeBSD servers. I've found the correct rpm's on this link: http://download.fedoralegacy.org/redhat/9/os/i386/ Then, please, update the links from this port to the correct ones. I am sending you these files to you to turn them available to all freebsd users that need them. Thank you. Looks like at least parts of the qemu-piix4-udma.patch from the IDE DMA hack are still needed (you omitted this patch probably because it no longer applies to the used cvs snapshot, which is also why I removed the entire DMA hack from the update I posted, but then I forgot that I still had the patched bios installed when I first tried -kernel-kqemu...) If you install linux_base directly first and java after sucessfull linux installation, it works. Dunno why the other approach doesn't work tho, my guess is that the build process passes the correct, but for linux wrong platform amd64 to some underlying install process. Nearly right. bsd.port.mk makes the architecture variable read-only in =20 submakes (at least this is the effect of what bsd.port.mk does). The =20 linux_base-8 port tries to change this variable but fails. Another workaround to the already found one would be to use the new =20 fc3 linux base port as the default (OVERRIDE_LINUX_BASE_PORT=3Dfc3 in =20 make.conf), since it handles this differently than the default linux =20 base port (which is scheduled to be replaced with the fc3 one after the release of FreeBSD 5.5 and 6.1). Just pinging the server or pinging from the host OS outside of my network results in loss of packets. Occasionally my CPU is so taxed that network requests are stalled or cut out. I've given 256 MB RAM to my guest OS (Ubuntu). I believe my computer has 384 MB of RAM. I've tried running Ubuntu with the default 128 MB RAM too. I can't help thinking that there is something simply wrong here. Qemu takes 25% of my CPU just to sit idle. I was under the impression that it is supposed to perform much better? As it stands, VMWare 3.x on the same machine runs far better. Qemu is currently pretty much unusable for me. Is this pretty much just the way things are? Should I try running FBSD 6.1 and running Xen? If so, any guides explaining how to do that? Any general advice? I'd like to move away from VMWare since it seems flakey, instable, and has a questionable future on FBSD. Could this be caused by lack of RAM too, or perhaps a problem with the Qemu kernel module? I think I read somewhere else that it isn't always very stable? I think I am running into swap... The answer sounds like adding more RAM or more swap to the machine. So, when you run a 256 MB host on a 384 MB machine, that leaves only 128 MB for the qemu emulator itself and everything else that runs on the machine. That means that you're probably running out of memory, and when the OS starts swapping, it'll slow down considerably. It doesn't make much of a difference whether the host OS is swapping or the guest os is swapping. Or both. You don't want that. :-) My advice: Add more RAM. Could this be > caused by lack of RAM too, or perhaps a problem with the Qemu kernel > module? I think I read somewhere else that it isn't always very stable? kqemu seems reasonably stable now. See if your disk activity light is brightly lit. If so, it is the swapping that is killing performance. If it is not lit, likely it is not hooked up:-) The disparity between the swapping speed and processor speed is so much worse now that pretty much any swapping will bring the machine to its knees. You need at least as much memory as your working set. So either add more memory or reduce your working set by exiting programs you can do without. For instance remove web browsers, email clients and bloaty window managers. Reduce memory needs of other things (for instance give less memory to qemu but beware of the same issues for the virtual machine!). But as always *measure* the changes to better understand the system behavior. > I think I am running into swap... The answer sounds like adding more > RAM or more swap to the machine. Adding more swap won't help. Same as mine. WITH_HACKS is not yet supported by newest qemu port. if you enabled DMA hack, and installed win2k/xp, win2k/xp doesn't boot with newer one I posted an update supporting this, but this is not a complete one. and seriously breaks the disk image so I removed tarball. thanks, -- NAKATA, Maho (maho@FreeBSD.org) From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Apr 12 12:34:19 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B891D16A402 for ; Wed, 12 Apr 2006 12:34:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mirya@matrix.ua) Received: from gw.matrix.kiev.ua (gw.matrix.kiev.ua [213.159.235.42]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 72C4543D70 for ; Wed, 12 Apr 2006 12:34:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mirya@matrix.ua) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by gw.matrix.kiev.ua (Postfix) with ESMTP id F35DE14BB8B for ; Wed, 12 Apr 2006 15:34:11 +0300 (EEST) Received: from gw.matrix.kiev.ua ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (gw.matrix.kiev.ua [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 97093-05 for ; Wed, 12 Apr 2006 15:34:09 +0300 (EEST) Received: from miryahost.matrix.local (mirya.dev.matrix.kiev.ua [192.168.1.27]) by gw.matrix.kiev.ua (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1CC4614BB85 for ; Wed, 12 Apr 2006 15:34:09 +0300 (EEST) From: Kyryll A Mirnenko aka Mirya Organization: MATIX.ua To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2006 15:34:06 +0300 User-Agent: KMail/1.8.3 References: <20060412120036.104B916A479@hub.freebsd.org> In-Reply-To: <20060412120036.104B916A479@hub.freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200604121534.07321.mirya@matrix.ua> X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at matrix.kiev.ua Subject: Re: recent qemu update breaks winxp guest X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2006 12:34:19 -0000 >    lo.  Did you set WITH_HACKS for one install and then for the other without > or vice versa?  If so try building the qemu port with the opposite. > WITH_HACKS integrates the ide-dma and async i/o patch which I believe > changes the emulated hardware and may interfere with a sensitive guest. Admittedly the cloning behavior for kqemu is a bit of a hack, but the module should be working. Quirky behavior with 'ls' is better than limiting it to a single process IMO. IIRC there's still some Linux-ish assumptions made by kqemu about how devices are opened multiple times that need to be correctly fixed rather than just worked around. Been a while since i've looked at it though.
