Long-time FreeBSD user since 1997-ish. Been away from FreeBSD for a while. I've always used it as a server, never tried as a workstation, so bear with me if I sound a bit dumb . Here's the problem. Audacity won't record anything from the mic. I know the mic works because if I go to volume and turn it up I get feedback, can hear what's going on, etc. So when I go into Monitor mode, for example, and even crank up the volume, nothing happens. Same for recording. Suggestions? Sorry if I sound a bit dumb. You wanna talk kernel hacking I'm your guy, but I'm pretty dumb about this kinda thing. Thanks in advance! Checked mixer, I was at 0. Set to 100, feedback, set to 0. Not a perms issue, I'm in as root. Can't tell what it saw in terms of duplex. I looked through dmesg and /var/log/messages and saw nothing about duplex as it relates to audio. I saw where the device came up, so I know it's up. I'm assuming pcm0 is the device in question? After the update, I get this message when playing AVI files: "Error!" "Compiler did not align stack variables. Libavcodec has been" " miscompiled" "and may be slow or crash. This is not a bug in libavcodec," "but a bug in the compiler. You may try recompiling using gcc>=4.2." " Do not report crashes to FFmpeg developers" Indeed, mplayer is slow, it drops frames on any / all AVI files now. mplayer did not have problems before I upgraded it. To me, it looks like this is a side effect of PR ports/119593. Or am I wrong here? I will try to downgrade the port to before ports/119593, to see if that helps. Should I send-pr this problem? I have no idea what a correct fix for this problem would be. My system is: root@kg-quiet# uname -a FreeBSD kg-quiet.kg4.no 6.3-STABLE FreeBSD 6.3-STABLE #20: Thu Jan 24 00:42:47 CET 2008 root@kg-quiet.kg4.no:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/QUIET amd64 And it has gcc 4.2.3 installed: root@kg-quiet# portversion -v | grep gcc gcc-4.2.3_20080130 = up-to-date with port gcc-ooo-3.4.1_3 = up-to-date with port gccmakedep-1.0.2 = up-to-date with port -- Regards, Torfinn Ingolfsen From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 5 04:18:57 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: multimedia@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A2F8916A417 for ; Tue, 5 Feb 2008 04:18:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jwampler@employees.org) Received: from willers.employees.org (unknown [IPv6:2001:1868:205::18]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 95A5B13C4D3 for ; Tue, 5 Feb 2008 04:18:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jwampler@employees.org) Received: by willers.employees.org (Postfix, from userid 10445) id 3722FFD46E; Mon, 4 Feb 2008 20:18:57 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 20:18:57 -0800 From: Jim Wampler To: multimedia@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <20080205041857.GB35016@willers.employees.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.2i Cc: Subject: No s/pdif out with envy24ht driver X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 05 Feb 2008 04:18:57 -0000 I have a Terratec Aureon 7.1 Space audio card in my system running FreeBSD 6.3-Release (last rebuilt 1/22). I load the driver via snd_envy24ht_load="YES" in loader.conf. Here's the output in dmesg: pcm0: port 0xec00-0xec1f,0xe880-0xe8ff irq 16 at device 8.0 on pci0 pcm0: [GIANT-LOCKED] pcm0: system configuration SubVendorID: 0x153b, SubDeviceID: 0x1145 XIN2 Clock Source: 24.576MHz(96kHz*256) MPU-401 UART(s) #: not implemented ADC #: 1 and SPDIF receiver connected DAC #: 4 Multi-track converter type: I2S(with volume, 192KHz support, 24bit resolution, ID#0x4) S/PDIF(IN/OUT): 1/1 ID# 0x00 GPIO(mask/dir/state): 0x21efff/0x5e1000/0x7fffff The analog out works fine and sounds good. The problem is there is no sound via the optical s/pdif-out. The motherboard has built-in HDA sound, which I tried, but Ariff Abdullah's HDA driver does not support s/pdif. In that case my DAC does not lock on a signal, as expected. In the case of the envy24ht driver the DAC does see a signal and does lock, but does not appear to have any data to decode - at least there's no sound. I've confirmed that the DAC works by sending it signal from the s/pdif out of my CD player. The mixer shows this: ecstasy# mixer Mixer vol is currently set to 95:95 Mixer treble is currently set to 0:0 Mixer synth is currently set to 0:0 Mixer pcm is currently set to 100:100 Mixer speaker is currently set to 0:0 Mixer line is currently set to 100:100 Mixer mic is currently set to 0:0 Mixer cd is currently set to 0:0 Mixer mix is currently set to 0:0 Recording source: mic During boot I see this message six times: "mixer: WRITE_MIXER: Device not configured" I also see this message if I try to adjust any device except vol, pcm, and speaker: ecstasy# mixer synth +100 Setting the mixer synth from 0:0 to 100:100. mixer: WRITE_MIXER: Device not configured So, is there some incantation that I'm missing which will turn on the s/pdif out, or is it actually not supported by the envy24ht driver? The one explanation I've been able to imagine is the s/pdif output is 24 bit and my DAC handles only 16 bit. The audio sources are mp3 or DVDs, so I'd expect 16 bit output since the envy24 is bit perfect. Any clues gratefully accepted. This test isn't correct, because it just finds the system compiler (/usr/bin/gcc) which is gcc 3.4.6: root@kg-quiet# gcc -v Using built-in specs. Configured with: FreeBSD/amd64 system compiler Thread model: posix gcc version 3.4.6 [FreeBSD] 20060305 I'm guessing (but don't know for sure) that the ports framework (makefiles and so on) uses a different compiler. For example one of the -portbuild- ones above. The port doesn't include a USE_GCC line, so I'm not sure how to find out which compiler it uses. I had a quick look at the Porters Handbook[1] but still can't figure out how the ports framework chooses a compiler if USE_GCC isn't set. Try scanning again at different time to see if you get different pids. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NDR_Fernsehen tvtv has both the audio and the video pid set to zero so it probably contains some other than video or audio data. Easy enough to test: mkdir /var/tmp/1stbin echo "echo ports is using PATH" > /var/tmp/1stbin/gcc chmod 755 /var/tmp/1stbin/gcc PATH=/var/tmp/1stbin:$PATH And then try rebuilding. If it does the echo you know it is using $PATH, so either rearrange your $PATH so that the gcc you want is first, or change the 1stbin/gcc to be a symlink to the gcc you want. If it doesn't do the echo, then it is using something else to find gcc. IIRC it uses PATH, but it has been awhile. Thanks, I should have thought of that myself. My assumption that there is something wrong came from different programs / tuners handling that differently. >> I often get "dvb dvr read timeout" after double clicking on a channel. >> Usually it works again after "Stop" and "Play". Also is it printed once after a channel switch or every > second? I cannot reproduce that right now. From my memory, it did not happen switching from the stopped state and the message is only printed once. Usually, I was able to switch channels without stopping first, but in that case, the picture from the previous channel just freezes and nothing happens. I can double click on the previous channel again to make in run again, but even after that I need to stop at least once to be able to switch channels again. From what I remember, that always worked -- thus, not really a problem. >> Are the messages from dvbusb I mentioned before expected using Kaffeine? >> dvbusb_usb_get_packets: Warning discarded 180 unknown bytes >> discontinuity for pid: 17 expected: 2 got: 8 > > Either you are using an old version of the driver or you have build > the driver with diagnostic on, I suggest you don't build the driver > with diagnostic to keep your dmesg from getting spammed. Yes, it is diagnostic. I thought it might have been an indication why Kaffeine crashes, but since you say it is expected in diagnostic mode, the problem with Kaffeine is probably really simply a problem of Kaffeine. BTW: On your homepage, you write that the experimental state of the driver manifests itself in picture artifacts. I had different problems, too, that I cannot reproduce right now: Often, the stick would not take the firmware but give an error message on dmesg that I cannot remember. I could never fix that by klunloading and reloading the driver or unplugging and reconnecting the stick to the same USB port. Anyhow, switching the USB port, the stick would accept the firmware. If you are interested, I will send you the error message, if that happens again. (I happened about every other try at the beginning, but does not happen right now.) Once, I had FreeBSD crash very probably related to dvbusb. I have never done that before, but if you are interested, I could try to follow the chapter about crash analysis from the handbook to try to extract some information from the vmcore generated. (Just not right now.) I am even listed as the person who successfully tested the latest change. Anyway, all I can conclude is that it's a change somewhere else in the sound framework that causes my current problems. One that is not specific to maestro.
