Q1: What is the difference between www.freebsd.org/~grehan/ppc-root-latest.tbz2 and http://people.freebsd.org/~grehan/ppc_iso/latest.iso and the downloads available at www.freebsd.org/where.html? Is ppc-root-latest.tbz2 FreeBSD7.0? Q2: Can I transfer the file to a pre-existing UFS drive in Mac OS X (10.2) and untar it, so that all I have to do when I get on-site is essentially reboot from CD? Q3: Once I have set the mountvolume in OpenFirmWare (OFW), can the machine be rebooted remotely? Q4: What is the difference between the link above and http://people.freebsd.org/~grehan/iso_install.txt? The problem with FreeBSD and the Xserve in this particular case is that you cannot power-cycle. You can do everything else remotely. What is "this particular case"? Xserve? G4? OFW version? Just to clarify: If I log in via ssh and issue shutdown -r now, will the machine come back up without someone being physically at the machine's keyboard? If I use Remote Reboot (power cycle) through my provider, I assume it will not come back up, correct? This is disheartening news. My goal is to build a server that can be completely controlled remotely. I have had STELLAR success with FreeBSD on i386. The Xserve is still a heck of a box. Is there any hope this situation will be remedied in a near-future release? Thanks again. My downtime will still be less with FreeBSD under the hood, even if I have to pay someone to visit the cage in person a handful of times a year. I haven't had a power failure in years, and in my experience FreeBSD will not hang unless I do something wrong (maybe ppc will be different - we shall see!) Just to clarify, if: A) FreeBSD stops working (power is on but I can't log in via ssh) B) Power is cut (cord unplugged, backup battery dies) the only way to recover is to hit the power button. Is OFW/single user login also required? >> If I use Remote Reboot (power cycle) through my provider, I assume >> it will >> not come back up, correct? > > Correct. > >> This is disheartening news. Without FreeBSD thousands of quality computers with plenty of life left will become obsolete; Apple has moved on, NetBSD is too hard to install, and Linux is, well, you know... My six year-old TiBook is still more reliable (and better outfitted) than some recent i386 laptops I've used. I can't wait to give it to my Mom as a starter Internet terminal - as soon as I can install PC-BSD on it! Plenty of Xserves are also destined for the garbage bin, which is a pitty. They run like tops. >> The Xserve is still a heck of a box. The last revision of the ADB code I wrote had the first bits of a PMU driver (written for a borrowed laptop, so I can't work on it anymore). It had enough pieces working that ADB was semi-functional, but could probably be expanded to do things like this without too much trouble, assuming Linux or NetBSD have worked out the communication protocol for programming this already. You will likely need MacOS for this. This is in common with the most annoying bits of the NetBSD install. I believe Marcel's gpart work can fix the partitioning issue, but the boot loader thing won't go away unless and until FreeBSD acquires in-kernel HFS support. There was a port of the Darwin HFS module back in the 5.3 days, but it has suffered badly from bit rot with all the VFS changes since then. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 13 22:01:46 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 851BD1065674 for ; Tue, 13 May 2008 22:01:46 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Received: from alto.onthenet.com.au (alto.OntheNet.com.au [203.13.68.12]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 44FE78FC0A for ; Tue, 13 May 2008 22:01:46 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Received: from dommail.onthenet.com.au (dommail.OntheNet.com.au [203.13.70.57]) by alto.onthenet.com.au (Postfix) with ESMTP id BD9C811CC2; Wed, 14 May 2008 08:01:33 +1000 (EST) Received: from peter-grehans-powerbook-g4-12.local (196.152.dsl.syd.iprimus.net.au [203.134.9.196]) by dommail.onthenet.com.au (MOS 3.8.6-GA) with ESMTP id DYH33616 (AUTH peterg@ptree32.com.au); Wed, 14 May 2008 08:01:43 +1000 (EST) Message-ID: <482A0FC7.6090000@freebsd.org> Date: Wed, 14 May 2008 08:01:43 +1000 From: Peter Grehan User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 (Macintosh/20080421) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Won De Erick References: <808375.35825.qm@web45805.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> In-Reply-To: <808375.35825.qm@web45805.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD on PPC embedded on Xilinx FPGA X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 13 May 2008 22:01:46 -0000 Hi Won, > I noticed that PPC is well integrated in the Xilinx XPS for FPGA > applications. Virtex 4/5 parts have 405-based hardcores, which FreeBSD doesn't yet support. The Virtex 6 will support 440-based cores, which FreeBSD does support on Freescale parts. It would still be some work to support Xilinx's soft-IP peripherals. I have a Virtex 4 with a 405 hard core, as well as an IBM Walnut 405 eval, so with the recent work by Rafal and co on getting U-boot support for FreeBSD, maybe something will finally happen on the 405 front. later, Peter.
