This question is the only thing which prevents me from using FreeBSD ports... I spend much time to convert every package into the specified format. I do agree with /usr/X11R6 -- there is nothing to do with that filetree -- and in fact it is the job (if at all) of XFree team... So, here I have to surrender and follow SysVish file hierarchy. (In fact Imakefile's configs do the job :) But I think that converting packages into BSD like filtree style would be a big enhancement for the whole FreeBSD. It lets a sysadm to keep his/her system nearly perfect right from the beginning -- no need to spend time for conversions. In addition it is not a really difficult job (well, maybe except of NCSA httpd and such things, which tries to keep its log inder its root directory in /usr/local brr :-(... Though I made the httpd to use /var/log at the local FreeBSD box). >It's really not any philosophical decision on our part. Sender: ports-owner@FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi Satoshi ( CC Ports, & Gary J (fax modem owner)) The patch below fixes the broken ports/comms/hylafax @ ctm444 (ie current Saturday 95 05 27 ). Please apply it to the CVS tree: - It fixes your broken version of my original patches-aa - You have easier access than me, - You are the ports master, & we are in code freeze. - If you want to make other Hylafax changes, please check them with someone (as I am with you in this case), Thanks :-). What this patch fixes: Your imposition of impossible FreeBSD CVS headers ... ( The distfile when extracted contains Sam Leffler's RCS headers, patch-aa should not have been changed to look for non existent FreeBSD headers. ) Thanks for your other work (ports.mk Re the unusual distfile name etc). I have tested these diffs on my ports tree (built from these ctms, (with ls -l to show dates...) 15198 May 22 15:21 ports-cur.0438.gz 2009 May 27 14:09 ports-cur.0444.gz I will start a make test on thud or freefall as soon as I am slip connected, (but will nohup it, as it has 25M of obj & binary etc to generate), for now this has been tested on my hosts here. CC Readers: If you don't want to wait for the CVS + CTM delay, grabs it now. My unbroken original Hylafax port also remains in freefall:~jhs (this never got sent to ctm recipients, as between my original commit & the ctm 0438 transmission, someone broke it. Well anyway, most of the failing hunks are $ strings only, we can just take those out, there aren't any that are "accidentally" included because they are part of the context. It seems like the only real problem is where it is attempting to fix the version number printed by --version, I guess we'll have to leave that out too, it will print out an incorrect version but that's about it, right? Yes, I realise that patch-aa should not have access to its's own cvs header string. Sam Leffler's patch.sh upgrades about 7 of his RCS header lines, as well as his code, all in files which are extracted from the distfile. My patch-aa treated Sam's RCS headers as plain text, (to show where we got the distribution from ) in the same way it changed the code. > I will probably > have to nuke the current patch-aa,v file. Import a correct one and then > do a cvs admin -ko on it so that all RCS strings are left untouched by > cvs on check out. It sounds like you think our CVS spots RCS strings embedded in the middle of patch-aa & changes them, when we need them unchanged ? I'm not sure if this is a bug, a feature, or even desirable (I guess: bug ?). > This is neither Julian's or Satashi's fault that this problem arrose, it > was a misunderstanding of just what CVS is going to do to this patch > file and requires a repository manager (mangler if you prefer) to make > it work correctly. > > > *** /usr3/ports/comms/hylafax.ctm444/patches/patch-aa Mon May 22 15:21:15 1995 > > --- /usr3/ports/comms/hylafax.jhs/patches/patch-aa Sun May 21 19:36:59 1995 > > *************** > ... > > DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COMMIT THIS PATCH, it will not do what you think it will > do. Thanks Rod, It'll be great to see Hylafax resolved :-) > Can you give me the original ``clean'' full version of the patch-aa file > as it should be to apply to the fetched port files. Sure, My original is in something like : freefall:~jhs/hylafax.as.committed/patches/patch-aa I have also mailed you a personal copy (12K). I generated patch-aa by uudecoding the commented out preamble email in patch-aa (which is from Sam's post to the flexfax list). Uudecoding creates patch.sh which applies some sort of non context diff. I applied patch.sh on the extracted distfile, then generated patch-aa with diff -c. The uuencoded original mail comes from Sam Leffler, author of Hylafax. patch-aa is dedicated to reproducing what Sam released, there's none of my stuff in there, so if you need to, you can work from Sam's original. > This will take me some time to resolve, as I will have to fetch the > bits over a 28.8K line :-(. Sorry it'll clog your line a bit, the distfile is > 1.06 M byte. But Hylafax is a nice package to have around :-) (PS I run my V32bis at 9K6 to my IP provider currently, (as 14.4 fails)). If it help to save you downloading, I have a directory freefall:~jhs/hylafax.compile (or something like that) where I was test compiling today, the make was nohup'ed & cc'ing when I left. I think hylafax is working now, someone please try the package on ftp.freebsd.org. I also have a fix to iv, unfortunately it's rather large and also incompatible with the version in ports now (i.e., I need to totally rewrite the Makefiles and such), so I'm waiting for the people who were working on the ports' version. As I wrote on a separate mail, if I don't hear anything from you guys, I'll go ahead and put in Thomas' version on the CDROM. Note that the code freeze has not been lifted (and will not be even after the main src tree is thawed), as we haven't tagged the ports tree. This is easy, I can just add a cp to the post-install target so it gets copied to /usr/local/lib/fax or somewhere. And add it to PLIST so that it will go into the package too. Note that the CDROM will have the original hylafax distfile in it, which means this file is already there. That should be enough for any legal protection for him, I think (I'm not a lawyer ;). When I renamed this to packages (I wrote a quick C program to rename all the links) it worked fine, but that leads me to wonder this: Why not collapse this one level and just install all packages straight into all, sylinking into that location? Right now, we just end up wasting all those symlinks in the all directory! This would solve my problem and be more efficient, too. What say? The problem is ... level 1 is basically DOS format (with RR extensions), and DOS can't hack dir's which start with `.' AFAIK. So the software isn't broken in that respect, although how it handles the situation most definately IS :-( >The idea was to put the packages in a hidden directory, or at least >something that looks significantly different from the others so that >users can easily distinguish the directories that are safe to "get >.tar.gz" with those that aren't. Err. If you get .tar.gz you'll most probably get a symlink tree anyhow (haven't tried it, but I'd be surprised if tar followed the symlinks). I think the solution is to use `all' properly - i.e. put the real packages into all and symlink into there. >P.S. True enough, but consider all.tar.gz. Can you really say that someone grabbing it isn't _already_ pretty much in the market for all of them? :-) > I'm not sold to the idea of using "all", it is the first thing that > shows up but that's only by accident and also it looks like all the > others. If so, I think you need to get that fixed, regardless of > the package situation.... :< I doubt this is a rockridge problem, it can handle that, it is probably an ISO9660 problem. Are you still using Young Minds to create the master image with? The problem is that you have to map long unix names to legal ISO9660 names which are even more restritive than DOS (8.3, all upper case, and you can't use as many of the characters as dos allows). Also if I recall correctly ISO9660 says in the 8.3 the 8 part must start with [A-Z0-9] and contain at least 1 character. You probably quickly overflowed what could be done to uniqify .package in 3 characters :-( -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Custom computers for FreeBSD From owner-freebsd-ports Sat Jun 3 22:06:45 1995 Return-Path: ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.10/8.6.6) id WAA14300 for ports-outgoing; Sat, 3 Jun 1995 22:06:45 -0700 Received: from silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU [136.152.64.181]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.10/8.6.6) with ESMTP id WAA14294 ; Sat, 3 Jun 1995 22:06:42 -0700 Received: (from asami@localhost) by silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (8.6.11/8.6.9) id WAA01409; Sat, 3 Jun 1995 22:06:40 -0700 Date: Sat, 3 Jun 1995 22:06:40 -0700 Message-Id: <199506040506.WAA01409@silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU> To: jkh@freefall.cdrom.com CC: ports@freefall.cdrom.com In-reply-to: <5181.802230751@freefall.cdrom.com> (jkh@freefall.cdrom.com) Subject: Re: Change in the package hierarchy organization requested From: asami@CS.Berkeley.EDU (Satoshi Asami) Sender: ports-owner@FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk * I don't see why it needs to! all means all. Am I the only one who * finds any added distinction somewhat strange and unnecessary? Because it's different. The lowercase directories contain only symlinks. I'm saying that the one special directory that contains the actual files should look distinctly different. "all" is not a very special name. For instance, there can be "all-x11" that contains all the programs that use X (not only the ones that are X utilities like our current "x11"), but this should be a symlink tree. * I think it goes without saying that all those symlinks in all are * a total waste! Hey, it's not my doing! It's you that added the "all" category to bsd.port.mk.... ;) Also, there is a bug in the shell globbing that causes "*/linkname" to fail (expands into "*/linkname" instead of "dir/linkname") when the link target is nonexistent, this may screw up automated scripts to move packages around. I would like to keep a way to distinguish directories easier (and capitalization is one such way). If everything collapses into the single format, it will cause a major headache for me.
