It would require changes to The most common PC hardware (separate dual UART + Centronics card) often does. The absence of a working interrupt line on some printer ports has caused FreeBSD to support a polled-mode printer driver, but without giving up its preference for the interrupt-mode driver. I don't see why the absence of a working RI on some hardware should prevent us from experimenting with what might become a technically cleaner solution. > quite a few programs to get fax receive to work based on RI > and it would not be a general solution. Basically, only the getty needs to know about it. This is just one program (and in case you wanna receive fax and/or voice, you have to teach your getty about it right now). getty then acts as a dispatcher that calls the appropriate receiver program (login, receivefax, receivevoice, pppd, etc.) > Still, it's a nice solution because it doesn't break the rules like > mgetty does. I installed 2.2-960323-SNAP on my home machine (a 486/66 IDE-disked box) and my work machine (a Pentium/150 SCSI-disked box). In both cases, once a 2.2 kernel was up and running, top(1) broke. Every invocation of top produced a seg fault. Reinstalling the top-3.3 package from the Walnut Creek 2.2-960323-SNAP CD/ROM didn't fix the problem. Actually, it seems that I did indeed misread his problem report (I thought it was the tzsetup bug where it would choose the wrong file for you, even though it *said* you were getting Denver) and the timezone file for Denver was, in fact, wrong. I had been running a 486 with just 16mb of RAM as the main file server. Call me unwise ... what a difference adding the next 16mb made. Swap space use went to zero, "xperfmon++" shows mostly green blocks. Since we use external terminal servers (Livingston), user ioload is minimal. Still, a fair amount of activity on the server however. Other than an unresolved problem with getting a newsgroup server running, (I know I am doing something wrong) FreeBSD has been the foundation of all we have done. I have some LINUX advocates looking to see if they can get a news server running on our 32MB P5-133 with 9gb of SCSI disk. I'd rather stay 100% FreeBSD. I've attempted to install "innd" several times. Printed reams of docs, source, searched and read everything on the search engine. Any ideas? The docs on how to set it up are in the source code, and you have to read them carefully to be able to do it ... it's not the clearest doc I've ever read. What's your error? After having many problems with my machine crashing up to 3 times a day, I enabled the DIAGNOSTICS option in the kernel (that does the sanity checking on various structures). Now when I boot I get a "page fault in kernel mode" consistently just after finding the SCSI cdrom. It seems to be complaing about my "vga0 - pci:14" card, although a trace shows a listing of scsi probes. I haven't included the trace since I couldn't be bothered to write it down (since I can reproduce the error at will). So, who should I really mail these problems to? Is there a list of recent/old bugs in the kernel (ie. is the freebsd developers mailing list archived anywhere?) in order that I can try to find the problem myself (I did an alta vista seach but it didn't come up with much). My hardware is intel motherbaord, ATI mach 64, adaptec 2940 and two SMC ethernet cards. I'm running 2.1 RELEASE. Any help greatly appreciated. Gary PS - you guys are doing a great job. I hope to be able to contribute to the effort sometime. -- pub 1024/C001D00D 1996/01/22 Gary Howland Key fingerprint = 0C FB 60 61 4D 3B 24 7D 1C 89 1D BE 1F EE 09 06 From owner-freebsd-bugs Wed Apr 24 15:36:09 1996 Return-Path: owner-bugs Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id PAA05393 for bugs-outgoing; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 15:36:09 -0700 (PDT) Received: from time.cdrom.com (time.cdrom.com [204.216.27.226]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id PAA05386 Wed, 24 Apr 1996 15:36:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.7.5/8.6.9) with SMTP id PAA13030; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 15:35:23 -0700 (PDT) To: Gary Howland cc: jkh@FreeBSD.ORG, bugs@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Bug report In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 25 Apr 1996 00:15:13 +0200." <317EA7F1.41C67EA6@systemics.com> Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 15:35:22 -0700 Message-ID: <13028.830385322@time.cdrom.com> From: "Jordan K. I haven't > included the trace since I couldn't be bothered to write it down > (since I can reproduce the error at will). Catching the trace is easy if you've got a second computer you can use as a serial terminal (e.g. with kermit). Hook it up onto your first serial line (ttyd0/COM1:), setup kermit for 9600 baud, and enable session logging. As soon as the ``boot:'' prompt appears, enter `-h'. This will turn your kermit session into the system console. I think you can compile a kernel, right? Could i convince you to read the section about kernel debugging in the handbook, and try to build a kernel with DDB enabled? Of course, this will only be useful if you can log your session, so you could mail or post relevant traces. This should give you at least a stack trace of where the system crashes. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-bugs Thu Apr 25 06:23:51 1996 Return-Path: owner-bugs Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id GAA08772 for bugs-outgoing; Thu, 25 Apr 1996 06:23:51 -0700 (PDT) Received: from birk04.studby.uio.no (birk04.studby.uio.no [129.240.214.13]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id GAA08765 for ; Thu, 25 Apr 1996 06:23:40 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from aagero@localhost) by birk04.studby.uio.no (8.7.5/sendmail95) id PAA02602; Thu, 25 Apr 1996 15:23:19 +0200 (MET DST) Date: Thu, 25 Apr 1996 15:23:19 +0200 (MET DST) Message-Id: <199604251323.PAA02602@birk04.studby.uio.no> Mime-Version: 1.0 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?=22=C5ge?= =?iso-8859-1?Q?R=F8bekk=22?= To: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Subject: gdb problem MIME-Version: 1.0 Sender: owner-bugs@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk I get find_solib: Can't read pathname for load map: Input/output error when gdb starts up, given the executable and the core file as arguments. $ ldd ./prog prog: -lc.3 => /usr/lib/libc.so.3.0 (0x801d000) I also tried to force a coredump with ^\ (SIGQUIT), same result. From: John Capo To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org Cc: FreeBSD-stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: kern/1159: NFS Client hangs in vm_object_terminate() - objtrm Date: Sat, 27 Apr 1996 19:25:46 -0400 (EDT) nfs/nfs_bio.c: 241 bp = nfs_getcacheblk(vp, lbn, bufsize, p); if (!bp) return (EINTR); if ((bp->b_flags & B_CACHE) == 0) { bp->b_flags |= B_READ; not_readin = 0; vfs_busy_pages(bp, 0); error = nfs_doio(bp, cred, p); if (error) { brelse(bp); return (error); } } The buffer returned from nfs_getcacheblk() has B_DONE set in b_flags. nfs_doio() goes off and does its thing but biodone fails with "biodone: buffer already done". bread()/brwrite() always clear (B_DONE | B_ERROR | B_INVAL). They both obtain a buffer from getblk() as does nfs_getcacheblk(). Should nfs_doio() also clear (B_DONE | B_ERROR | B_INVAL)?
