Make an entry in /etc/remote for the serial port: wyse:dv=/dev/ttyd6:br#9600:pa=none 2. Fire up tip: tip wyse 3. Press keys on the wyse ... they should appear on your FreeBSD host. 4. Just a plain vanilla "full null modem" cable, you should probably find a scheme in any RTFM. TD/RD and RTS/CTS are crossed, GND is straight (of course :). (Sorry, my right arm is still broken, so it's difficult for me to perform ASCII art exercises just now). BUT you need a null-modem with one male and one female connector (usually null-modem cables have 2 female connectors, because DTE be it a PC or a terminal or whatever _usually_ is male connector). The easiest way to do this is to get a cheap miniature device from Patton Electronics, look at http://www.patton.com which allows you to create just any RS232 wiring scheme with a mini plugs and nit also has LEDs to monitor what's going on. I think you might find a null-modem wiring schema on their site, too -- their printed catalog have some. And I've seen this kind of mini devices from other vendors, too. OR you may take a plain modem cable, cut it in the middle and cross-solder appropriate signal wires (that's what we did). Hope this helps. Do you want PCI, VLB, EISA, or ISA? Do you want 10Mbps or 100Mbps? Do you want 10base2, 10baseT, AUI, 100baseXX? If you are building a system from scratch, I suspect that your best option is to go PCI, and get a DEC 21x40 based card. I personally like the Kingston 10baseT cards because they're like $50. The SMC EtherPower 10/100's are pretty cool too, but are more like $150. ... Maybe -hardware is more appropriate for this. Meanwhile, I did some experimenting, but with no luck. ? The install program does not recognize the hp hard disk, ? although it is probed initially correct. ? (Under DOS one can (of course :-) boot from the HD without problems.) To install 2.1.5, I'm using an ASUS-P55TP4XEG board with 2 SC200 controllers and an S3-PCI-VGA-card (VC-962) 7 TEAC CD-56S, 2 SMC8016 combos (IRQs 10 and 11), 1 hp 35480A DAT, and 1 hp C3725S (50 MB DOS partition). In the BIOS the IDEs are disabled and the IRQs for the PCI slots were initially set: Slot 1 (Right) IRQ 15 <-- ncr1 Slot 2 14 <-- ncr0 Slot 3 Auto <-- vga0 Slot 4 (Left) Auto I also changed the IRQs for #1 and #2 to 15, 14 and to 'Auto'. Moreover, I tried swapping the SCSI cables. On probing the devices, the kernel emits pci0:10 IRQ 15 for vga0 pci0:11 IRQ 9 for ncr0 (hp C3725S = 0, TEAC CD = 2 & 3, hp 35480A = 6) pci0:12 IRQ 12 for ncr1 (TEAC CD = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) When the install menu appears the debug screen VTY2 shows: sd0(ncr0:0:0): ABORTED COMMAND asc:4e,0 Overlapped commands attempted, retries: 4 sd0(ncr0:0:0): ABORTED COMMAND asc:4e,0 Overlapped commands attempted, retries: 3 sd0(ncr0:0:0): ABORTED COMMAND asc:4e,0 Overlapped commands attempted, retries: 2 sd0(ncr0:0:0): ABORTED COMMAND asc:4e,0 Overlapped commands attempted, retries: 1 sd0(ncr0:0:0): ABORTED COMMAND asc:4e,0 Overlapped commands attempted, retries: FAILURE sd0: error reading primary partition table reading fsbn 0 (sd0 bn 0; cn 0 tn 0 sn 0) And when calling the partition editor a box appears which says: No disk found ! Please verify ... I reduced the configuration step by step by removing o the second SC200 interface (ncr1 with 5 CDs) o the two CDs on the first SCSI interface o the streamer But the messages shown above remained even in the minimal configuration with only the hp 3725S connected to one SC200. I even tried the 2.1R install disk without success. (No errors with streamer and without HD -- but how to partition a tape ? :-) Let me note that I'm using at home a hp3725S on an AHA1542B without problems. I read in the archives that this error message has something to do with tagged commands, but what can I do ? I also followed the -questions and found that others also have trouble with hp disks connected to NCR controllers. I hope you can help me by providing some steps to make the disk run or state (with some reasoning) that I should drop this disk and make the dealer change it. (to what type ?) Those HP drives caused some trouble in the past. And for that reason, I suggested a "FAILSAFE" option to be defined in the install kernels. If FAILSAFE is defined, than the NCR driver does not use tagged command queues, and it should be able to deal with those HP drives. > I reduced the configuration step by step by removing > o the second SC200 interface (ncr1 with 5 CDs) > o the two CDs on the first SCSI interface > o the streamer > > But the messages shown above remained even in the minimal configuration > with only the hp 3725S connected to one SC200. > I even tried the 2.1R install disk without success. > (No errors with streamer and without HD -- but how to partition a tape ? :-) > > Let me note that I'm using at home a hp3725S on an AHA1542B without problems. Well, and that might be the way you get your system installed: 1) Install FreeBSD-2.1.5R using the HP drive 2) Build a kernel with FAILSAFE defined 3) Move the HP drive over to the NCR and boot the kernel built in step 2) I did not check that the 2.1.5R boot floopy has actually been built with FAILSAFE defined. I'll check that the NCR driver in 2.1.5 and the kernel config file agree on the use of FAILSAFE. Please let me know, if you try the 1542 install and can't get a kernel compiled with FAILSAFE to work with the NCR+HP combination. > I read in the archives that this error message has something to do with > tagged commands, but what can I do ? > I also followed the -questions and found that others also have trouble > with hp disks connected to NCR controllers. Yes. This had been reported a few months ago for the first time. The drives seem to work reliably if tags are disabled. But since all other drives work just fine with tags, I did not want to have tags OFF by default. That's why FAILSAFE was added: It selects more safe defaults for the install kernel and should have prevented the problem you see ... > I hope you can help me by providing some steps to make the disk run > or state (with some reasoning) that I should drop this disk and make > the dealer change it. (to what type ?) If you want to return it, then get an IBM DORS-2160 in exchange. This appears to be a good drive of the same performance class at a reasonable price. But you will be able to use your HP 3725, though only with tags disabled ... Please let me know whether you get your system going. I can provide you with more detailed instructions, if required (if necessary by phone :). The DEC drive might have been a good choice 2 years ago, but it for sure isn't anymore. There are quite a number of 3.5" 2GB drives available for about $500, and they should run much quieter and more reliably. (The Seagate 43400 was sold out in the $350 region a few months ago in Germany, and it offers 3GB and better performance than the DSP5200.) How about the IBM DORS-2160 ? It is a 5400RPM, 8.5ms seek drive, that consumes just over 4W (typ.) and should offer twice the data rate of the old DEC drive ... > Size of drive is not an issue -- I've got the case space. > How's the reliability, noise and heat. Typical power consumption of a 5.25" drive was in the 20W to 30W region. This is far more than even the fastest 3.5" drives, which only because of their smaller surfaces run danger of overheating. Reliability is hard to measure, but if you believe the official MTBF numbers, then a modern 3.5" drive will have only about 25% of the failure rate of a 5.25 drive as of two years ago. The 3.25 drives are also less noisy, though the 7200RPM models surely aren't really quiet. > Anyone have any other recommendations... I'm looking for something > above 1gb and under $500. Humm.. wonder why HP decided to get out of the disk drive business :-) If you can find anyone with a Qauntum Capella (QM32210CP-S) they are a very good drive (my lost costing on these show them in the $550 range). or the OEM version of this drive, Saturn (VP32170SN-S), is another good choice. You should also be able to find Micropolis MC4421's in the $500 range, brand new modern drive, 8.8mS, 5400RPM 512k cache, 5yr warranty. 3.5"x1". -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Reliable computers for FreeBSD From owner-freebsd-hardware Thu Aug 1 14:54:06 1996 Return-Path: owner-hardware Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id OAA01797 for hardware-outgoing; Thu, 1 Aug 1996 14:54:06 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.frihet.com (root@frihet.bayarea.net [205.219.92.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id OAA01791 for ; Thu, 1 Aug 1996 14:54:02 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.frihet.com (tweten@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ns.frihet.com (8.7.5/8.6.12) with ESMTP id OAA17862; Thu, 1 Aug 1996 14:53:12 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199608012153.OAA17862@ns.frihet.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 1.6.7 5/3/96 Reply-To: "David E. Been there, done that.... FreeBSD detects it as an NE2000 but starts to report NIC errors immediately after boot. I wonder if this is the same problem I had when I put 64K of RAM in one of my AE-3's.... The latter didn't work because the driver was not smart about sniffing out the RAM's location in the card's memory space. (As you know, the host accesses the RAM by setting an address counter and then doing PIO reads and writes, which auto-increment the counter.) --Brett From owner-freebsd-hardware Thu Aug 1 21:36:03 1996 Return-Path: owner-hardware Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id VAA18459 for hardware-outgoing; Thu, 1 Aug 1996 21:36:03 -0700 (PDT) Received: from genesis.atrad.adelaide.edu.au (genesis.atrad.adelaide.edu.au [129.127.96.120]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id VAA18344 for ; Thu, 1 Aug 1996 21:34:40 -0700 (PDT) Received: from msmith@localhost by genesis.atrad.adelaide.edu.au (8.6.12/8.6.9) id OAA28565; Fri, 2 Aug 1996 14:10:29 +0930 From: Michael Smith Message-Id: <199608020440.OAA28565@genesis.atrad.adelaide.edu.au> Subject: Re: Micropolis, again To: darrylo@hpnmhjw.sr.hp.com (Darryl Okahata) Date: Fri, 2 Aug 1996 14:10:29 +0930 (CST) Cc: phk@critter.tfs.com, freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.org In-Reply-To: <199607242135.AA003034134@hpnmhjw.sr.hp.com> from "Darryl Okahata" at Jul 24, 96 02:35:33 pm MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-hardware@FreeBSD.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Darryl Okahata stands accused of saying: > > If it's an option, could we make it set AWRE/ARRE only if they > aren't already set? Is this > likely to work? Probably -- but you haven't said how much RAM you have. I've burned CDs using a 25MHz 386 and a 1542B (both HD & burner are connected to the 1542). However, an important criteria is RAM; this lowly 386 has 16MB. You've got to have enough free RAM to allow the team(1) processes to act as a user-land cache, which probably means that you should have at least 12-16MB of RAM (assuming that you do NOT have any memory-hungry programs like X11 ones running). You can probably get by with 8MB RAM, but I'm not sure. I wouldn't even think about it with only 4MB. Note that burning a CD is a disk-space-intensive, two-step process: (1) you create an CDROM image file from the files that you want to go onto the CD, and (2) you burn the CD using the image file (and NOT the original directory tree). The bottom line is that you'll need again as much disk space as that used to hold the files that you want to place onto the CD. In a worst-case scenario (a completely full CDROM), you'll need 650MB+650MB==> ~1.3GB of disk space. However, if you're only placing ~400MB of files onto the CDROM, you'll only need around ~800MB of space. Also note that you cannot always use symlinks in the original directory tree. In the case of symlinks pointing to files, the symlinks are either placed onto the CD, or they're ignored (there's no way to follow them). In the case of symlinks pointing to directories, I think they can be placed onto the CD, followed or ignored (I haven't tried this). -- Darryl Okahata Internet: darrylo@sr.hp.com DISCLAIMER: this message is the author's personal opinion and does not constitute the support, opinion, or policy of Hewlett-Packard, or of the little green men that have been following him all day. Well, maybe. Assuming that the DAT drive can do at least 9MB/min (my old Archive 2550X DAT drive probably cannot do this), probably, if you burned in 1X mode (150kb/sec). Burning in 2X mode would require the DAT drive to deliver at least 18MB/minute; I think some DAT drives can, but not all. Of course, I don't know if burning in 1X mode will work, but I assume that it does (I'm running a bit low on disk space, and so I may try a 1X burn with the image accessed via NFS). -- Darryl Okahata darrylo@sr.hp.com http://web.sr.hp.com/~darrylo/ From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri Aug 2 22:26:40 1996 Return-Path: owner-hardware Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id WAA28240 for hardware-outgoing; Fri, 2 Aug 1996 22:26:40 -0700 (PDT) Received: from Kryten.nina.com (dyn049-gnv.51.fdt.net [205.229.51.50]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id WAA28228 for ; Fri, 2 Aug 1996 22:26:37 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (frankd@localhost) by Kryten.nina.com (8.7.5/8.6.12) with SMTP id BAA22117 for ; Sat, 3 Aug 1996 01:23:21 -0400 (EDT) X-Authentication-Warning: Kryten.nina.com: frankd owned process doing -bs Date: Sat, 3 Aug 1996 01:23:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Frank Seltzer X-Sender: frankd@Kryten.nina.com To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Parity errors during install Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-hardware@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi All, I am having trouble installing 2.1.0 on a new machine. Built in yes, enabled by default on the 2940 (it's easy enough to check this one, it is right in the SCSIselect menus), disabled by default on the MC4421 (the manual is wrong, everyone of these I have seen comes with the termination disabled). And the case has a LOT of surface area, which means a lot of power dissipation. Speed is acceptable. There seem to be some SCSI compatibility problems with the drive. It has problems on Sun 3s, and some PC-compatible controllers will give you infrequent but resounding core dumps and segmentation faults under FreeBSD. I'm having pretty good luck with an Adaptec EISA SCSI twin. Okay, curiosity killed the cat, but would it sizzle my fingers? The above degree of contradiction inspired me to doubt my memory, so I opened up the machine's tower case. It has been running continuously for weeks. My full tower case has an exhaust fan in the power supply in the top back corner. It has a slightly bigger intake fan for filtered air in the lower front corner. I like cases to be slightly pressurized with filtered air -- that keeps dust accumulation off the diskette, tape and CD mechanisms. The DSP5200S is mounted in the top front corner, behind the case's switches and LEDs and just above the stack of tape, CD and floppy drives. That's about as far away from either fan as it could get. At the top of the case, it's also in a location where heat might be expected to accumulate. The result? The DSP2500S is warm but not hot to the touch, and the part of the metal case that clears its top by less than a quarter inch is cold to the touch. Using the temperature probe that came with my DVM, I measured the drive's HDA case surface temperature at 94 degrees F, not even human body temperature. According to its specs, it should typically dissipate 17 watts spinning continuously with no seeks. Under continuous random seeks, that should rise to 23 watts. Spin-up consumption should be 57 watts. The coresponding maximums are 20 watts, 28 watts, and 66 watts, respectively. BRETT_GLASS@ccgate.infoworld.com said: >It has problems on Sun 3s, and some PC-compatible controllers will >give you infrequent but resounding core dumps and segmentation faults >under FreeBSD. Mine's been terminating the inside-the-case end of the SCSI bus served by my Adaptec 1742 for two and a half years. In that time, my FreeBSD 1.1.5.1, 2.1, and 2.1 Stable systems have never seg faulted or core dumped except when I've been fiddling with the software, or doing a system installation. The Adaptec must not be one of "some PC-compatible controllers." Lest this read like a ringing endorsement, rather than just a defense of the positive part of my previous neutral statement, I'll repeat. It's old (purchased on sale over 2 1/2 years ago), big (5.25 inch, full height), and slow (12.9 ms seek, 3600 rpm). So is the rest of my machine (4 1/2 years, full height tower, and 486DX33). So am I (none of your business). The lesson? Who knows. Maybe, "Your mileage may vary." -- David E. No, it's not unless the drive actually has a truly simple geometry (i.e., a fixed number of sectors per track) and very little buffering. >I had a recently frustrating experience with a 540M Quantum Fireball >that FreeBSD simply refused to accept my "true" drive geometry. >FreeBSD won and mapped to ???/32/64. The Fireball has a geometry of 2 heads and 88-177 sectors per track, and a 128K buffer. It doesn' have a truly simple geometry so you shouldn't try to tell FreeBSD its "true" geometry. ???/32sectors/64heads should be written as ???/64/32. 64 heads is impossible for bootable drives. Newfs uses the geometry ???/1/2048 unless it is invoked with special options. This strange geometry is used to limit newfs's "optimizations" to 1MB boundaries. The optimizations are usually pessimizations. The ???/64/32 geometry is probably only used by the BIOS and the bootstrap. They really do. We got one of those a few months ago (it was $299 then) at it works just fine. It's a bit loud, but tolerable. It doesn't even run that hot, but I do have an extra cooling fan on it just in case. Supposedly, the trouble with the DFRS drive is every 72 hours it shuts down for a few seconds and then restarts. Now, I've never witnessed this while FreeBSD was running, but it does happen when I boot into DOS ever so often. Anyway, I'm happy with it, and even happier with the price. -- Sean Kelly NOAA Forecast Systems Laboratory kelly@fsl.noaa.gov Boulder Colorado USA http://www-sdd.fsl.noaa.gov/~kelly/ From owner-freebsd-hardware Sat Aug 3 16:35:06 1996 Return-Path: owner-hardware Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id QAA25530 for hardware-outgoing; Sat, 3 Aug 1996 16:35:06 -0700 (PDT) Received: from clem.systemsix.com (clem.systemsix.com [198.99.86.131]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id QAA25520 for ; Sat, 3 Aug 1996 16:35:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by clem.systemsix.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with SMTP id RAA15326; Sat, 3 Aug 1996 17:34:39 -0600 Message-Id: <199608032334.RAA15326@clem.systemsix.com> X-Authentication-Warning: clem.systemsix.com: Host localhost didn't use HELO protocol X-Mailer: exmh version 1.6.5 12/11/95 From: Steve Passe To: Sean Kelly cc: hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: SCSI Drive recommendation In-reply-to: Your message of "Sat, 03 Aug 1996 15:44:09 MDT." <199608032143.VAA20165@gatekeeper.fsl.noaa.gov> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Sat, 03 Aug 1996 17:34:39 -0600 Sender: owner-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi, > Steve> Do they really mean this? > > They really do. Consider this : most modern disk drives use ZBR; ie. they use differing numbers of sectors for different areas of the disk, because the recording limitation is the flux density on the media, not the data rate off the platter. So your average drive may have 5 or more zones, each with a different number of sectors per cylinder. Which one is "correct"? > I had a recently frustrating experience with a 540M Quantum Fireball > that FreeBSD simply refused to accept my "true" drive geometry. > FreeBSD won and mapped to ???/32/64. FreeBSD's only interest in the disk geometry is to match whatever the BIOS thinks, so that it can correctly locate the beginning of its partition on the disk.
