Now copy the files in /usr/local/scitext/defaults in a directory .SciTeXt in your home directory. Every user has to do this, otherwise the program will stop with an error like 'Cannot open Translation-Table. I had to stop the program!'. 5. You can now start scitext by typing 'scitext'. I had this problem at first too, just go into your XF86Config file and add the directory /usr/local/scitext/dof to your fontpath list. Disclaimer: i intend to integrate this seamlessly into the kernel CD driver, hence i don't need any `complete package' (i've already seen and analyzed a few of them). What i'm interested in is: . how to enable CD-DA reading on the various drives (i do know already about SCSI cmd 0xd8, and about the density code 0x82 in the mode parameter buffer header, but i don't have an exhaustive list of which vendor supports what, or whether there are more conceptually incompatible solutions), and . useful hints, like those in Charles Henrichs' package; though i think fine-tuning will have to wait until the driver framework is established (i don't think the first version will be optimal, and i do not hesitate throwing away some code after a certain learning process). I wouldn't mind leaving hooks for things like CD-I or Video CD, but they aren't the primary goal either. (Posted & mailed. What i'm interested in is: One feature I'd like to see is the seemless integration of mixed mode CD's. If you ever had the chance to examine a Sony Playstation CD (CD-ROM XA) they frequently have directory entries in the XA track like "songname.da" which points to a dataoffset deep into DA territory. That sort of application control would be wayyyy coool. However, given the crap one must go through to actually retrieve useful CDDA data from most CD's I doubt we'll get it. As a side note, I just got a Plextor 8plex and it seems to have the capability to seek accurately to a single CD sector consistantly (finally!) hurray for the good guys! In any case most CD's are such garbage that seemlessly support CDDA in the driver seems to be a futile attempt at best. Then again, who knows :) -Crh -- Charles Henrich Michigan State University henrich@msu.edu http://pilot.msu.edu/~henrich From owner-freebsd-multimedia Mon Aug 5 18:43:24 1996 Return-Path: owner-multimedia Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id SAA05209 for multimedia-outgoing; Mon, 5 Aug 1996 18:43:24 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.crl.com (mail.crl.com [165.113.1.22]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id SAA05195 for ; Mon, 5 Aug 1996 18:43:22 -0700 (PDT) Received: from phaeton.Artisoft.COM by mail.crl.com with SMTP id AA02432 (5.65c/IDA-1.5 for ); Mon, 5 Aug 1996 16:10:36 -0700 Received: (from terry@localhost) by phaeton.artisoft.com (8.6.11/8.6.9) id QAA12220; Mon, 5 Aug 1996 16:01:49 -0700 From: Terry Lambert Message-Id: <199608052301.QAA12220@phaeton.artisoft.com> Subject: Re: snd into -current To: kuku@gilberto.physik.rwth-aachen.de (Christoph P. Is this the new sound code with the GPL license, or the old sound code with the more lenient license? There was a big discussion on the license change, and the consensus seemed to be to not update the code, since a GPL code in the kernel makes the kernel non-distributable because of the conflicts between the GPL "no additional conditions" clause and the BSD "give credit" clause. Even if we manage to get seamless CD-DA support into the driver, i assume it will remain beta quality until FreeBSD 2.3. If i understand it right, all the existing packages do already support this kind of hardware anyway, so it's better to direct new solutions to better hardware. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-multimedia Tue Aug 6 08:13:29 1996 Return-Path: owner-multimedia Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id IAA23991 for multimedia-outgoing; Tue, 6 Aug 1996 08:13:29 -0700 (PDT) Received: from crh.cl.msu.edu (crh.cl.msu.edu [35.8.1.24]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id IAA23986 for ; Tue, 6 Aug 1996 08:13:26 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from henrich@localhost) by crh.cl.msu.edu (8.7.5/8.7.3) id LAA00914 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Tue, 6 Aug 1996 11:13:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Charles Henrich Message-Id: <199608061513.LAA00914@crh.cl.msu.edu> Subject: Re: Streamworks for FreeBSD To: pete@sms.fi (Petri Helenius) Date: Tue, 6 Aug 1996 10:46:06 -0400 (EDT) In-Reply-To: <199608060558.IAA29135@silver.sms.fi> from Petri Helenius at "Aug 6, 96 08:58:00 am" X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL22 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk > The streamworks client 2.0 is crap anyway. I had a discussion about the sound driver with -core about two months ago, and it was decided that we would import the GPL driver. The stipulation is that the sound driver must be fully contained in a loadable module. I don't like GPL any more then the next guy, but we simply don't have the person-power maintain the sound driver if we import USS-Lite. I have begun the work to get the latest version of USS-Lite into -current (and I hope to have this done soon, I have some free time again). I am not sure that we can do much on way of CDI or VideoCD except for the ability of the driver to be able to read 2352 byte long blocks and then have all the smarts on the program. If I am not mistaken Philips may go after the author or FreeBSD if the programming info is release to the general public. Usually, what Philips has done is to ask that the programming info to be undisclosed and may possibly ask for a fee for their license which is less than $500 or so. In exchange for which I got a 4 inch (10 cm) thick green book (not 'the Green book') with the CDI specification in it. VideoCD is covered in 'the White book' which I had access to via a previous employer. After producing with Amancio the code that reads VideoCD/CDI disks and plays them via Talisman MPEG I Decoder cards, I met with representatives of the Philips/Sony consortium with regards to what I had and what I wanted to do with it. It came down to You can't publish anything which might give away information contained in the specification. You can give away object, executables, and lkms. If you plan to make any money via the software you have developed give us a call and will arrange an appropriate royalty for ourselves. A very fine point was defined during the meeting which was we were going to give away the CDI/VideoCD "viewer" along with our product (MPEG I decoder) so our customers could view CDI and VideoCD diskettes. I felt during the negotiations that Philips wanted some percentage of the product sales (MPEG I decoder) but we basically said that it was just an addon and if it cost us money we would leave it off, thus our customers wouldn't be buying VideoCD or CDI media. The word 'view' was much better than than word 'play' during the discussions because the word play was too close to the word player. Philips/Sony get royalties from player manufacters like JVC. They also get royalties from content providers and media manufacturers. The Philips representatives pretty much agreed with our position, or more likely didn't smell much money, and went on to greener pastures. IMHO, putting the decoding of the CDI or VideoCD directory structures into the device layer is not the way to go. Or at least I don't see how it is useful. On the other hand, being able to read mode 2 form 2 sectors seems clearly to belong in the device layer. Applications such as CCD which plays tracks, or tmplay which can actually read and report the CDI directory info seem appropriate to me. -- Brian Litzinger brian@mediacity.com From owner-freebsd-multimedia Wed Aug 7 22:54:37 1996 Return-Path: owner-multimedia Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id WAA12375 for multimedia-outgoing; Wed, 7 Aug 1996 22:54:37 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rah.star-gate.com (rah.star-gate.com [204.188.121.18]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id WAA12365 for ; Wed, 7 Aug 1996 22:54:34 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rah.star-gate.com (localhost.star-gate.com [127.0.0.1]) by rah.star-gate.com (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id WAA08742; Wed, 7 Aug 1996 22:53:27 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199608080553.WAA08742@rah.star-gate.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 1.6.5 12/11/95 To: brian@MediaCity.com cc: joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de, multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: cdrom ... Funny that people in Berkeley build software to Linux and not even compile it for BSD Unix! Is BSD unix loosing it's "magic" even in Berkeley itself? Seppo PS. The GIMP's functionality includes: Support for 8, 15, 16, & 24 bit displays Ordered and Floyd-Steinberg Dithering for 8 bit RGB, Grayscale, & Indexed color modes Multiple views of same image to ease complex tasks Fast zooming and panning on images Full suite of selection tools - (rectangle, ellipse, freehand, fuzzy, bezier, intelligent) Transform tools - (rotate, scale, shear, flip) Crop, color picker, bucket-fill, blend, & text tools Paint tools - (paintbrush, airbrush, clone, blur, sharpen, convolve) Full set of brush masks and support for arbitrary brushes File format support - (jpg, tif, gif, png, xpm) Numerous effects filters - (blur, edge detect, pixelize, ...) Channel operations - (add, composite, blend, ...) A call to all programmers! A good deal of the GIMP's functionality is invested in external modules, called plug-ins. These independent programs are called from the GIMP to run as separate processes and carry out essential tasks such as loading and saving images, running effects filters, combining multiple images with channel operations, and communicating with other programs (such as scanning software, ray tracers, other image manipulation packages, etc). There are in fact so many things that we expect to accomplish with plug-ins, that we don't have a fraction of the time required to see them written. We expect that there are some really sharp folks out there with esoteric knowledge on such subjects as creating a realistic lens flare filter - something neither of us has the slightest idea about, but would love to see implemented. So, we're asking you, assuming you have interest in augmenting the GIMP's functionality, to get in touch with us about filters you'd like to write. One thing that will really help get things rolling will be the addition of a "plug-in writing" tutorial to our growing set of tutorial pages. I took a short look at the ILU Project and it sounds quiet good. But at this time I am working at the kernel functions of SciTeXt and try to make it a bit more OO. Once we have a stable version ILU support can be added to make SciTeXt easy to extend and modular, so one can use the SciTeXt functionality in it's own program. All this sounds great, but I think it is not the time for it yet. Did you take a look at SciTeXt - it's awful and if I don't start to structure it first, things will become very complicated. But we can keep up to date with the development of SciTeXt and ILU and perhaps they will come together one day. If the source of SciTeXt becomes more readable, perhaps someone else can come up with the task of modularizing SciTeXt and adapt it to ILU... ciao, Matthias From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Aug 9 20:06:10 1996 Return-Path: owner-multimedia Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id UAA28555 for multimedia-outgoing; Fri, 9 Aug 1996 20:06:10 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rah.star-gate.com (rah.star-gate.com [204.188.121.18]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id UAA28550; Fri, 9 Aug 1996 20:06:08 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rah.star-gate.com (localhost.star-gate.com [127.0.0.1]) by rah.star-gate.com (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id UAA00746; Fri, 9 Aug 1996 20:06:01 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199608100306.UAA00746@rah.star-gate.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 1.6.5 12/11/95 To: Josh MacDonald cc: Seppo Kallio , questions@freebsd.org, multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: gimp In-reply-to: Your message of "Fri, 09 Aug 1996 16:05:42 PDT." <199608092305.QAA13384@paris.CS.Berkeley.EDU> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Fri, 09 Aug 1996 20:06:00 -0700 From: Amancio Hasty Sender: owner-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk >From The Desk Of Josh MacDonald : > > There are new snapshots available in ftp://www.XCF.B.E/pub/gimp/developers. > They compile under FreeBSD and do not require Motif.
