Now I want to install softwares from the precompiled packages. Is there any command like "make install" to install them so that I can delete them using "pkg_delete"? Is there a recommended directory to install the packages? I ask the latter question because I find after I decompress the packages using "tar", there are several subdirectories named "bin", "lib", "man", how can I treat these directories( my method is copy them to /usr/bin, /usr/lib and /usr/man, I don't know if it's right)? I managed to install and run Star Office using the Linux emulator and a pre-compiled Lesstif library. It is not very stable (but it was announced as a pre-BETA), and speed is comparable to the early UNIX versions of Wordperfect (slooow ...) But at least Star Office allows me to load and edit a Word document under FreeBSD. Though I did not yet manage to print anything, which would have been one of my major uses. (There are quite a few Word ".doc" files floating around, since some vendors seem to assume, this was the ultimate exchange format :) Do not underestimate the effort to install Star Office! It takes at least 60MB of disk space, and you better have 32MB of RAM if you really intend to start it ... There is a partial port of JDK-1.0 from back in February in LOCAL_PORTS on freefall. In the readme for it, it mentions that a new relase would be out when appletviewer was ported...did this ever happen? I'd not care as much if javac_netscape worked, but all it seems to do is suck up memory and CPU cycles without doing much real work. I have my CLASSPATH and NCLASSPATH set properly, www/JDK port installed, netscape3.0 (release, and I tried it with a few beats I still could find around. Any help would be appreciated. There is a partial port of JDK-1.0 from back in February in And that was the last time I had any time to work on it. It probably works for graphical applets if I could just relink it or something simple like that, but now I'd want to start over again with 1.0.2. I have a one-half block of semi-free time coming up which I can use to do either a 1.0.2 port or to debug lingering Lite2 problems. There are other considerations like the fact that JDK 1.1 is due out between September (now) and December of this year and will represent the biggest change since the HotJava Alpha to JDK beta transition and that we are still lacking supporting work on the base operating system for things like weak symbols and threads. As the JDK 1.0 port shows, a port can be done without these, but it's hard. Of course, the source is available from Sun and the hardest part, bootstrapping the bits which are written in Java, is already taken care of for you since you can use the JDK 1.0 binaries, so I would encourage anyone with the inclination and lots of knowledge of threads, bootstrapping compilers, dynamic linking, and Java to do a port and help out all the folks asking for a port. Locally, I've got a script that I use to setup a newly acquired system. A [hand-edited to remove some localisms] copy of it is appended to this message. The basic upshot is that a new system gets a /usr/adm/smail/ tree copied to it, then the install.smail script backs up the previous versions of some files and installs symlinks to the smail equivalents in their place. (No, it is not a drop-in solution for a FreeBSD smail port, but it might provide thought fodder). I want to present a numeric output on an ascii-terminal in big letters. One way to do this, is to divide the output to two or more lines for displaying the letters in segments like the display of a calculator. To do this, I need a special font with the segments in the upper part of the ascii-table. Well, I was not able to realize it on a FreeBSD 2.1.5-platform with the sysconsfonts. On the other way I did not found an editor to adjust an existing font (fontedit did not work). Thank's a lot in advance. Its listening on the ttcp services port which is 5037. On default the program transfers 2048 buffers of 4KByte length (totaling to 8 MByte of data) between the calling host and the partner host. If nttcp is started via inetd(8), it will log the originating hostname.
