I'm using the vnc-tool with which I'm able to get a Windows 95/NT Screen onto my X11-Display. The binary version works quite well, but I think the better solution would be to do it in a browser window. So there's a JAVA version of vnc. It has a makefile because it's just the source. I tried to compile it with kaffe and guavac but nothing worked. So maybe anyone has the class-files (.jar) anywhere ? Or maybe I forgot to setup something ? Do I need to get the JDK from Sun ? I only have the classes from netscape and I'm totally new to compiling JAVA (BTW, I don't understand why they give it out as JAVA source because as binaries it should anyway run anywhere because of the binary compatibility, am I right ?). It's in the ports collection, /usr/ports/lang/jdk After that, it compiles fine. > I only have the classes from netscape and I'm totally new to > compiling JAVA (BTW, I don't understand why they give it out as JAVA source > because as binaries it should anyway run anywhere because of the binary > compatibility, am I right ?). Nevertheless, you still need to have the JDK installed (or in the case of binaries, JRE), to run the compiled code. The Java Virtual Machine is what runs the code. I downloaded the tar file jre1_1_5i_V98-2-25.tar.gz from the site http://www.freebsd.org/java. I have never been able to extract it successfully. Previously some recipeints of this mailing list said that Netscape might be messing with the download. I tried Internet Explorer, and it still has the same problem. The tar command does manage to extract some files under the lib directory; but, it terminates with a message as follows: "tar: skipping to next file header." I don't see the "jre" binary among the files it extracts. The other option is to use ftp. The ftp link (ftp://ftp.luth.se/pub/unix/jdk/FreeBSD/) seems to be broken. The server seems to be down. Could someone please re-establish this server or advise me on other methods to ftp the jre? I'm trying to connect back to a servlet on the web server from an applet, using the HTTPS protocol. All I want is to have the servlet return information to my applet (not a web page or anything), basically like a response code. At the moment I construct a URL like: new URL( "https", "www.myhost.com", "/servlets/foo" ) and attempt to get its InputStream. However, this causes problems (a malformed URL exception i.e. no content handler I guess). Does anyone know of any easier way to do this? or an appropriate content handler I guess? I'm thinking this could be done with the HttpSession object somehow. Cheers, Joe.
