You're absolutely right. I tend to just slam down my thoughts about problems which people have, without really considering the fact that someone might act on them! :-) IMHO, your "How to ask questions" page should be required reading for every FreeBSD user who wants to ask a question. It really is that important. -- Andrew Boothman http://sour.cream.org/ http://www.boothman.easynet.co.uk/andrew/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Mon Nov 30 12:13:01 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA09137 for freebsd-newbies-outgoing; Mon, 30 Nov 1998 12:13:01 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from mail.eee.org (mail.eee.org [163.150.39.253]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA09130 for ; Mon, 30 Nov 1998 12:12:59 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from larry_nilsen@eee.org) Received: from eee.org (jtuser23.eee.org [163.150.24.221]) by mail.eee.org (8.8.6 (PHNE_14041)/8.8.6) with ESMTP id MAA17713 for ; Mon, 30 Nov 1998 12:12:47 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <3662FB4C.16ACD2E7@eee.org> Date: Mon, 30 Nov 1998 12:08:44 -0800 From: larry_nilsen X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.06 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: subscribe Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Tue Dec 1 12:30:56 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA13488 for freebsd-newbies-outgoing; Tue, 1 Dec 1998 12:30:56 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from inga.augusta.de (inga.augusta.de [193.175.23.65]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA13482 for ; Tue, 1 Dec 1998 12:30:53 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from case@augusta.de) Received: from augusta.de (ppp8.augusta.de [193.175.23.107]) by inga.augusta.de (8.8.8/8.8.7) with ESMTP id VAA23174 for ; Tue, 1 Dec 1998 21:30:35 +0100 (MET) Message-ID: <366451C6.53A13D2F@augusta.de> Date: Tue, 01 Dec 1998 21:29:58 +0100 From: Wolfgang Kess X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (WinNT; U) X-Accept-Language: de-DE,en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Installing on a PC Card HD Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, is it possible to install a binary-only FreeBSD on a PC Card HD? Can FreeBSD read a system V fs? Should I stick with a dos formatted floppy (how can I mount it?). 3) What is the syntax for mounting a dos partition? You should have included the output of your dmesg with your original post... Anyway, the GENERIC kernel has sio2 and sio3 disabled by default. You can boot and enter -c at the boot prompt, followed by v to enter the visual config editor and enable sio2 and sio3 (they'll be in the bottom section when disabled and it the top section when enabled) or you can build a custom kernel (good idea to get used to do this anyway). See http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/handbook50.html#125 Also, be sure to select IRQs that are NOT shared with any other devices. This ain't Winblows, ya know... Unix systems measure "uptime" in years, Winblows measures it in minutes. If you want something designed towards FreeBSD, you could grab FreeBSD Applixware (pre-order @ walnut creek). I read a comparison of Applixware and StarOffice for Linux, and Applix won (but both recieved high praise). Haven't tried any myself, but if your not in a rush, you really might want to grab Corel. Main reason being that it, I would think, will be able to read the standard file formats Microsoft shoved out there (ie. word, excel). I;ve never heard of a good format reader/writer for *nix - all have been disappointing from reviews I've read... I did notice one thing in your question - it sounds like you are typing "startkde" on the command line. Are you? If so, that is why you are getting the error. You have to put "startkde" into the .xinitrc file, then start X by typing "startx" on the command line. Hope this helps. I'm running 2.2.7 and just recently upgraded to XFree86 3.3.3. I read the KDE ports page and determined everything I would need to install KDE. I was able to find everything listed on the kde-base required list except qt.1.41. I found qt.1.40 and hoped that this would work. I also read the newsgroup archives and learned that when installing the packages, installation order is important or you get dependency errors. I installed all the packages but had a few problems along the way. One problem was that one of the packages depended on XFree86 3.3.2 being installed on my machine. It was already installed and I was using other window managers to prove it. I went back to the newsgroup archives and found a post that showed a way to update the package database without actually installing software. I continued with the installation and made it all the way through to the end without any errors. I ran startkde and received bad magic number errors and old version numbers for libqt. Figuring that my problem was related to not loading qt.1.41, I looked all over the ftp site until I found it. I downloaded the package and ran pkg_add but encountered some errors. First it said that XFree86 3.3.3 was required and then gave me an error with trying to symlink to a library file. So I went ahead and upgraded to 3.3.3, rebooted and tried to run startkde. Now I get the following error: /usr/libexec/ld.so: warning: /usr/local/lib/libjpeg.so.9: minor version -1 older than expected 0, using it anyway ld.so failed: bad magic number in "/usr/local/lib/libjpeg.so.9 I hope all this isn't coming across as a comedy of errors to those who know better! I've tried to be very methodical in my approach and to read all the FAQ's, newsgroup posts, and the like. I'm just not sure what to do at this point. Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated. I installed it over ftp - I don't know if that makes a difference. Try going to ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/x11/kde/ This is the DESCR for the meta-port: "This package does not contain anything by itself -- it is a "meta-port" that depends on other KDE packages. The problem is, I have to install Windows on it - I need the PC for work, and the apps I need to run are M$-based, so there's no chance to dedicate it to FreeBSD. Anyway, here's what I'm trying to sort out. I will have two machines - a P233MMX with 64MB SDRam and 2.1 GB HD + CD-Rom, sound card, etc; and a 486DX4-100 with 16MB RAM and a 1 GB HD, plus alternately a 24x CD Rom or a 500MB HD (only 1 IDE port, so I have to swap them out depending on what I need at the time. Lots of reboots...) I would like a nice X workstation running KDE or another nice-looking window manager (I've tried FVWM2, and will probably also try Enlightenment and AfterStep) - the 486 is just a little too slow for graphic-intensive X sessions. I will likely be ordering a cable modem in the next few months. What I am thinking is to set up my machines as follows: - Install Win98 on the 2.1 GB HD, formatted as FAT32. - Install the 1 GB HD in the new machine as a secondary HD, dedicated to FreeBSD with X - Set it up as dual-boot. - Mount the FAT32 drive in FreeBSD permanently so I can share files. - Install FreeBSD on the 486 500MB HD. (no X) - Network the two, using NFS if needed, and when I get the cable modem, I will turn the 486 into a firewall / proxy server. Any thoughts? M. Installation painless, lacks documentation, but its a word clone with enhancements. It does have known bugs, according to the SO web site. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources:charters.html) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. Now I got "new" computer (166Mhz/64MB/4.3G+2*0.5G/6x)and I'm back to fbsd - after several weeks of parsing and praying.. I've got dualboot, with Nt 4.0 WS on first partition (1G) and fbsd 2.2.6 on second partition, 3G. It was interesting when I was installing these OS'es - NT didn't see fbsd's boot manager, and boot manager sees NTFS as HPFS . Windows 95 didn't like me at all, it destroyed my harddisk and I had to format it. I was so stupid that I didn't believe that win95 wouldn't install with fbsd AND NT, so I tried it several times - I wanted to have tripleboot but it seems to be very difficult to make it working with two (or more, I tested the good old ms-dos too) m$'s products. I also found out that even win NT isn't very stable, I got dial-up network working fine with it but it doesn't work anymore - and i haven't changed a thing. Well I don't really need it anymore, I got ppp working great from freebsd, and I haven't even booted to winNT for few weeks. But I also had something to ask about: I remember someone asked about StarOffice, and Sue told him/her to try some ports - which those ports/packages were? Any other suggestions for good/powerful/nice/goodlooking/terrible textprocessing utilities are welcome btw, does anyone know any url's to documents that describe programming in UNIX environment? - I don't know how to compile my c program which uses gtk.. and that's a BIG problem. I am happyly using FreeBSD about 1 year at home (now I am running 2.5 release). My HDD Western Digital 3.2G is partioned in following manner: 1-st partition - FAT32 1G with Windows 95 OSR2 ,2-nd DOS-EXTENDED with FAT-16 1G partition and 3-rd 1G slice dedicated to FreeBSD. I am using FreeBSD boot manager to perform dual boot. Now I am strong wish to buy new PII and dedicate it almostly to FreeBSD 3.0). For typesetting I am using teTeX (TeX and LaTeX) with cyrillc KOI8 fonts. TeX for first approach is rather complex but some experience and well documents can be produced for reasonable time: TeX (LaTeX) for processing inputfiles, xdvi for preview dvi files(TeX output), dvips for dvi to ps conversion. Postscript output can be interprete by GHOSTSCRIPT to produce the output for most not postscript printers. All this require X. Also I can strongly recommend HylaFAX (tm) telecommunication package to work with your faxmodem to have capability send your documents by fax and accept external logins through phone line. hylafax processes sharing modems well with other telecommunication programs such as UUCP, ppp. Good by.
