SCSI supports this concept, it's called multiple initiator. Obviously you'll have to set each hosts for it's own unique scsi id. Keep in mind that if the bus runs at Ultra speeds you have a severely limited cable length. (1.5 meters, maybe you'll be able to get it to work with something a bit longer). For professional use we exclusively use differential scsi (we == Digital ^H^H^H^H^ Compaq). This kind of stuff is done in VMS and Digital Unix clusters. And please note that if some host does a scsi bus reset your tape will loose it's position. Some (all?) rewind etc. Not nice if you're doing (incremental) dumps on the nrst device obviously. I'm copying this response to freebsd-scsi also, since that is where I thought to search when I was having this problem recently. I have been having possibily the same problem with 3 Seagate STD28000N DAT drives. Two drives had version 6500 firmware, while the other had version 6280. Processes like mt and rmt (rdump or gtar initiated) were hanging on three similarily configured FreeBSD 2.2.6-RELEASE systems. Once the process hung, I was unable to kill it. Running ps showed that the process was in the "D" STATe (disk or other short term, uninterruptible wait). Since these processes still had the /dev/rst0 device open, I would get the "Device busy" errors. The only solution I could find was to reboot the system. There wasn't any pattern to when the problem would occur. Some backups would work fine and the problem wouldn't appear for days at a time. Searching with DejaNews came up with some postings suggesting that the Archive Python DAT drives (which the Seagate is a decendant of) had problems with command tag queueing. I sent an e-mail to Seagate tech support about the problem. Seagate didn't answer many of the questions I asked, but did include the firmware upgrade I requested. I installed the firmware upgrade to version 658A. It required using a DOS boot disk with ASPI drivers loaded on it. I have now been running for 8 days using the new firmware. I have not had a single problem with the mt or rmt processes locking up. My busiest tape drive writes multiple tar/dumps onto 3 or more tapes a night. Since I did the upgrade, I seem to be having many less tape problems overall. I'm going to run for a while longer before I assume that I have found the solution to my problems. Hopefully this is the answer. Consider a $70 to $100 PS is cheap compared to your HD's and the aggravation. Am guessing both bad HD's were purchased at the same time from the same vendor and put into service at the same time? Then its possible you simply got a bad batch. OTOH I've seen a professional factory-authorized repairperson replace the entire guts of a computer trying to fix a problem, until the last thing left was the PS. New PS fixed it. What kind of CDROM drive do you have? Can you send the full dmesg output. (not from /var/log/messages, but 'dmesg' output) The reason your device is going away is that the drive isn't responding to selections. The thing to do in that case is: - unmount the CD - camcontrol -r 0 or camcontrol -r 0:n:0, where 'n' is the target id of your CDROM drive When you unmount the CD, you should get a message that says "removing device entry". If not, that means that someone still has the device open. You may have to reboot to get it back. (I've seen bugs in the system that mean that a device is held open even after it has been unmounted. I've also seen situations where you can't unmount the drive.) The rescan may or may not bring your drive back. It depends on how bad it's hung. Justin and I have discussed adding a selection retry count, but we haven't done it yet. There's no guarantee that would fix your problem, in any case. It all depends on how "gone" your drive is. That's odd. My guess is that it has something to do with pages that are mapped into kernel virtual address space in the passthrough driver not getting properly unmapped when the application exits. I'm not sure how that could happen, though. I can't reproduce that behavior with tosha. Can you send me your patches to cdda2wav? If I can reproduce it, I may be able to track it down. Does the panic happen every time, or just sometimes? The system is a K6-133 on an ASUS HX mobo, with an NCR53c810 and an IBM DCAS-32160 drive. It seems that /usr/bin/install is the only program that causes this to happen. It causes a panic pretty regularly. (preventing me from doing a 'make installworld' and bringing the binaries up to date.) Otherwise, the machine has long uptimes serving out ethertalk for a bunch of macs. Here's the error I got yesterday: Data buffered space not in kernel context sd0: oops not queued panic: biodone: buffer not busy I can provide more info, but I was hoping this was something that has been seen before. I have enabled all the debugging I could find, and will no doubt have more to report presently. I have 'FAILSAFE' defined in the kernel config file. I'll probably poke around in the kernel later today, and look at /usr/bin/install to see if I can figure out why it might be exercising this. Any ideas before I do? thanks, -Craig PS -- please advise if I should have targetted different lists. Okay then, two questions: 1. Without these tools is there any way for me, with a 2.2-stable system to: * determine array status (e.g. "drive 3 has failed") * issue basic commands like "rebuild array" or "make drive X a hot spare." I'm mostly interested in being able to fully recover from a single drive failure without having to reboot and run the DOS Storage Manager. ... and no, I don't have DPT drives and enclosures (grrr...) which I understand would take care of this for me. 2. Would you consider 3.0-current generally stable enough for me to use for a large storage system? (about 52 GB usable space, 4 RAID-5 arrays ccd'd together, as you suggested) It will be doing little other than serving up this disk space to a handfull of other FreeBSD boxes via NFSv2. If I did use 3.0-current, will these tools from your ftp site allow me to do what I describe above? They indicate (really) controller, bus, target. Serious Answer: You are right, and I am working on it. I will probably release it on 3.0, as 2.x is a stable release for which new functionality is not destined. > * issue basic commands like "rebuild array" or "make drive X > a hot spare." Took the words out of my mouth :-). With DPT enclosures, you will find that the number of failures is reduced dramatically. Call me at home for details on how to acomplish that a bit easier. > 2. I do not know the state of the NFS these days. My experience with the DPT driver and the kernel, is that I can load 3.0 much heavier than a 2.2 kernel. This last sentense is in conflict with the official FreeBSD policy of strongly discuraging production work on 3.0. My advise here is to always test a new 3.0 kernel, heavily, before putting it on a production machine. Heck, this is good advise for ANY software version :-) > If I did use 3.0-current, will these tools from your ftp site allow me > to do what I describe above? Not yet, but as soon as they are functioning properly you will.
