I don't see this particular model anywhere in our documentation, but it's likely that the 3C579/3C589 driver would work. In any case, I'd recommend you move to FreeBSD 3.2 before expending a lot of work on a release which is no longer supported. > 2) Is there any page gives the step by step installation guide for > this purpose. ?? Let me know. It appears that there isn't. > 3) If not how/ where to begin ?? Well, I'm planning to write a chapter about mobile computing in the next edition of "The Complete FreeBSD", but it's not in any shape to show at the moment. Basically, here's what you need to do: 1. Build a kernel with the following device entries: # PCCARD (PCMCIA) support controller card0 device pcic0 at card? irq 0 device pcic1 at card? irq 0 2. Copy /etc/pccard.conf.sample to /etc/pccard.conf. 3. Run pccardd (just start it). 4. Insert your PCMCIA board. 5. Watch the messages that appear on the console. You'll get one of these (or something like it): Jul 7 17:33:53 mojave pccardd[56962]: No card in database for "3Com Corporation"("3CCFE575BT-D") This message shows that pccardd has found the card, but that it doesn't know how to configure it. ep0: utp/bnc[*UTP*] address 00:60:97:40:fb:e1 This one means that pccardd has found the card and has configured it. 6. I think it's unlikely that the standard pccardd will recognize your card, since nothing I've seen recognizes the 3CCFE575BT-D ID. Look at the contents of /etc/pccard.conf. You'll find an entry like: # 3Com Etherlink III 3C589D card "3Com Corporation" "3C589D" config 0x1 "ep0" ? insert echo 3Com Etherlink III inserted insert /etc/pccard_ether ep0 remove echo 3Com Etherlink III removed remove /sbin/ifconfig ep0 delete Change the second line of this entry to: card "3Com Corporation" "3CCFE575BT-D" The two strings must be *exactly* what appeared in the console message above. Save the file, stop pccardd (kill will do it) and restart it. With any luck, pccardd should bind the driver to the board, and the driver should recognize it. Let me know how this works; I need some examples for the book, and this would help me too. Greg -- When replying to this message, please copy the original recipients. The following cards are supported: - SK-9841 1000baseLX, single port, single mode fiber - SK-9842 1000baseSX, single port, multimode fiber - SK-9843 1000baseLX, dual port, single mode fiber - SK-9844 1000baseSX, dual port, multimode fiber Yes, that's right: dual port gigabit ethernet. :) SysKonnect's driver software currently only uses the dual port adapters in a failover configuration, where the second port is monitored by the driver and only activated if the link on the primary port fails. This driver doesn't use that approach: instead, both ports are treated as separate and independent logical network interfaces. This means you should see something like the the following: skc0: rev 0x10 int a irq 11 on pci0.14.0 skc0: SysKonnect SK-NET Gigabit Ethernet Adapter SK-9844 SX dual link sk0: at skc0 port 0 sk0: Ethernet address: 00:00:5a:98:21:6c sk1: at skc0 port 1 sk1: Ethernet address: 00:00:5a:98:21:6d Yes, you can have both interfaces up and running at once. The SysKonnect cards use the XaQti XMAC II gigabit ethernet MAC and a controller designed by SysKonnect called the GEnesis. It is the GEnesis controller that provides all the PCI logic, plus other functions. The GEnesis controller can have up to two XMACs connected; single port cards have only one, of course. Information about the cards, including programming manuals for the GEnesis controller, can be found at http://www.syskonnect.com. The datasheet for the XaQti XMAC II can be found at http://www.xaqti.com. The sk driver supports hardware multicast filtering, BPF, promiscuous mode and jumbo frames up to 9000 bytes. It should also work on both FreeBSD/i386 and FreeBSD/alpha. To add the driver to an existing system: - Download if_sk.c, if_skreg.h, xmaciireg.h and if_media.h from http://www.freebsd.org/~wpaul/SysKonnect/3.0. - Copy if_sk.c, if_skreg.h and xmaciireg.h to /sys/pci - If you have a version of FreeBSD older than 3.2-RELEASE, copy if_media.h to /sys/net and /usr/include/net. You may also want to recompile ifconfig at this point, though it's not mandatory. - Edit /sys/conf/files and add a line that says: pci/if_sk.c optional sk device-driver - Edit your kernel config file (e.g. /sys/i386/conf/GENERIC) and add a line that says: device sk0 - Compile a new kernel and boot it. NOTE: make sure to recompile if_media.c now that the new if_media.h is in place. If you have problems, please send them to wpaul@skynet.ctr.columbia.edu. Include lots of details. -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (212) 854-6020 | System Manager, Master of Unix-Fu Work: wpaul@ctr.columbia.edu | Center for Telecommunications Research Home: wpaul@skynet.ctr.columbia.edu | Columbia University, New York City ============================================================================= "It is not I who am crazy; it is I who am mad!" - Ren Hoek, "Space Madness" ============================================================================= To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Wed Jul 7 14:52:27 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from pike.cdrom.com (pike.cdrom.com [204.216.28.222]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AFDC414F80 for ; Wed, 7 Jul 1999 14:52:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from support@cdrom.com) Received: from localhost (support@localhost) by pike.cdrom.com (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with ESMTP id OAA19990 for ; Wed, 7 Jul 1999 14:53:02 -0700 (PDT) X-Received: from nj-gate.slk.com (smtp2.slk.com [12.3.89.217]) by pike.cdrom.com (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with ESMTP id HAA09436 for ; Tue, 22 Jun 1999 07:22:59 -0700 (PDT) X-Received: by nj-gate.slk.com; id JAA19688; Tue, 22 Jun 1999 09:57:25 -0400 (EDT) X-Received: from slkmail.net.slk.com(92.1.33.235) by nj-gate.slk.com via smap (4.0a) id xmaa19632; Tue, 22 Jun 99 09:56:26 -0400 X-Received: by slkmail.net.slk.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2232.9) id ; Tue, 22 Jun 1999 10:19:08 -0400 Message-ID: From: "Quayle, Doug" To: "'support@cdrom.com'" Subject: Ethernet card Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 10:19:02 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2232.9) Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----_=_NextPart_001_01BEBCBA.30798DE0" Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This message is in MIME format. Yes, I'm very interested in a FreeBSD IrDA project. I've also met Daniel J. O'Connor at the linux-irda list who also seems very interested in doing things. I have a Tekram IRmate 210 serial dongle, and I'm waiting for it to be back in stock so I can ship another one of these to Daniel. I'd be very interested in IrCOMM (including Palm III comms) support at first, followed by IrLAN and not related to IrDA, a TV remote function (possible with the Irmate 210) Daniel is now gone for a two weeks holiday, however we will start work when he gets back. We're planning on a user lever implementation first. I suspect my problem is some kind of interference in the frequency range used by the card. The cards work beautifully most of the day, but between 8:00pm and 2:00am they drop 50% of the packets, and not all the machines even see all the packets. I need to dig up an oscillascope and see what happens on the wire, but my belief is now that it is not my driver patches, although I'd still be interested in reports. Supposedly you can control the power level and speed used from software, so I may take a look at having the driver adaptively switch to low speed high power in the event of a certain frequency of losses. I'll be back in the US at the end of July/beginning of August, and will have time to look into it further then. > So what is the status of getting this committed? One thing that > was missing from the PR patches was the file/line for correctly > detecting the PCI ID of the card. I don't have the file name with me at > the moment, but I am sure that you know what I am taking about (unless > you got it working a differnt way! ;-) ) I'm not sure what the commit process is, other perhaps than leaving it in a pr for a while. I've cc'd this message to -hardware in case anyone is interested in committing the patches, or knows what to do with them. I'm attaching a more recent patch below, which may have more of what you are looking for. Again, since I'm out of town and not at a FreeBSD machine, this is hard to test :-). The code displays a fairly comprehensive error message in the event of a packet loss, as I was trying to pull up statistics using their manamagement interfeace (mii), unfortunately despite the datasheet's claim, it seems you can't access the statistics on this card. It has been removed to avoid casual users assuming that it is well supported. The source is still there and more up to date as well. If you want to use the USB Zip drive driver, you will have to upgrade your system to CURRENT. Be aware that this is not without consequences, as you will have to keep your system up to date and be able to fix it when it is broke. Have a look on http://www.etla.net/~n_hibma/usb for possible patches to help you. I have not done any work with the coding of Device Drivers, so I don't know where to start. Any ideas?? If someone out there knowledgable in this area is willing to help out that would be great. I am wondering about the method I should go about for my ir device (it is on my pci bus). The kernel finds it on boot, but doesn't have a driver for it. ;) I was looking in /usr/src/sys/pci/ at some of the code and I found something that was pci serial, so I think that it might help me out because I am guessing that IR is used kinda like serial but other functions? Well, keep in contact, and send any helpful information and/or code. We also might go about setting up a web page for this project. So others can find us, and join in? Nothing conflicting? You don't happen to use for example a soundblaster or second parallel port. Also, in your dmesg there quite a few irq's unassigned ('??'). You might want to check that those do not end up in the way. What does the ouput of the PCI configuration say (just after boot, when the overview of your systems components has appeared). Luckily they are still under the 90 day warranty. What is the best way to test drives upon bying them? Continuous newfs? For how long should one stress test them? The drives I have were very lightly used for most of the time I have had them. If I had done any kind of stress tests they would probably have shown signs of problems early on. Does a format with the controller utility help? The "verify" function doesn't seem to be doing much. I tried to use this just to get the drive in enough shape to get some files I needed. Double check that there is not a BIOS setting that allows it to boot without a keyboard. On some ol' 486's that I hooked to a serial console, the relevent option in the BIOS was called something like 'Continue Boot on Error.' -- Crist J. I got some weird Motherboard-PCI-BIOS problems here that maybe you can help figure out. Okay, so I got two motherboards that are doing similar wierd stuff. One machine (the Win98 mamchine) has an Asus P5A mainboard and the other machine (the FreeBSD machine) has a FIC 2013+ mainboard. Both of them are using Award BIOS. Okay, it started when I put a quirky network card into the FreeBSD machine (I didn't know it was quirky then, but I had my suspicsions). Keep in mind that the FreeBSD machine is on the FIC motherboard. I booted it up and FreeBSD found the card just fine. It's a SimpleNet RealTek 8029 chipset based adapter. According to FreeBSD 3.2 it was detected and should be working just fine. Now, I've setup network cards many times in the past with FreeBSD and I've really never had a problem. This time, I tried to ping out to another machine and I got nothing. It pretty much hung there. Trying to do a 'nestat -r' did the same thing. I looked at the lights on my handy-dandy cable modem and there seemed to have been no outgoing traffic from the FreeBSD box. So I moved it to another PCI slot, and I got the same problem. Weird. I thought. I know this machine worked fine because I had another one of those cards previously installed. I had taken it out because it was a loaner from the Win98 machine. (Now now, I don't think that Win98 broke the FIC -- and I'll tell ya why). I even tried that original card (the one from the Win98 machine) and it still didn't work. But when I put that card back into the Asus machine (Win98 machine), the Asus aquired the same problem on the PCI bus. Although, the ISA bus seemed to work okay. After many hours of frustration, I had a friend look at it. He was stumped too. After screwing around with different setting on the BIOS, he was able to get the card communicating with the PCI bus it seems. Although, he's not quite sure what actually got it working. Another thing is that if I try to add another PCI card, it dies again. Both Win98 and FreeBSD are able to detect the card and install drivers for them, but the card just doesn't work. I tried re-adding (because it was removed in order to try to fix the problem) a bt848 video capture card back into the Asus machine, but it also did not work and neither did the PCI RealTek network card. Once I took out the video grabber, the PCI network card started to work again. Weird! It was all working just fine the day before. Now I'm kicking myself in the ass for trying to install that cheap network card. I should have bought an Intel. :( *sigh* My questions are: Why would this happen to two different motherbaords? What kind of problem would cause this to happen, and what in the BIOS actually fixed it. I figured that maybe someone may have had this happen to them and know how exactly to fix it, and I give thanks for any help you might have. Joey "Dazed and Confused" Garcia PS My friend that had gotten the two machines to start working again made the assumption that it had to do with ESCD, although I have no clue to what that is and how to set it in the BIOS. I sometimes see it at bootup though. My personal experience is that Win95 (no experience with Win98 yet) PnP is itself quirky, and is quite capable of screwing up a previously working config at the drop of a hat. Setting the BIOS for "non-PnP OS" means that all PnP settings are established by the BIOS, and those that can logically controlled (ie ISA IRQs etc) can be hardwired in the BIOS. -- Andrew I MacIntyre "These thoughts are mine alone..."
