I installed FreeBSD 3.2R on my brand new SONY and I got X running. The glideALPS touchscreen (or whatever) also works well. The modem is recognized by Windows 98 as an HCF Rockwell PCI modem (it doesn't seem like a winmodem), but it's not recognized by FreeBSD. The sound uses a Neomagic chipset that is not recognized either. apm works well, but after getting back from suspended mode the external serial mouse doesn't work (it doesn't work on Winblows either, so it's surely not a bug in FreeBSD). Due to the modem problem I had to keep W98 in a partition, but at least it comes with a nice set of postscript fonts. All in all I am happy. thanks for all yee hard workers! Pedro. Reboot, go into the bios, and make care full note of what IRQ's are set for things like SoundCard and so on. Then go into pao and with dmesg, check which other IRQ's are taken. My guess it that that is the problem. You propably have to add '5' or so to the list if IRQ's pccardd should avoid; this is done in pccardc.conf. Alternatively pick a free one and tie the IRQ to the card in the pccardc.conf file; on the LinkSys line. To see which list your card can handle, use 'pccardc dumpcis'. I wish Toshiba's support had a non-commercial way to ask them questions over the net (their method requires CompuServe membership)... This Portege 3110 is a pretty new system, yet it doesn't appear to have LBA (Logical Block Addressing) to support booting an OS who's boot partition starts at a cylinder numbered over 1023. On the other hand, the Win partition is first, is over 1GB in size, and the second partition, FreeBSD-release, is the next partition, and it boots OK. I want to run -release and -current in different partitions so that I can run them separately. There's nothing in the BIOS settings about this. I FIPS'd Win down to 1GB. I put a 2GB partition in for -release. That runs OK. When I went to install -current into a new partition starting about 3GB into the disk, I got complaints about something too large or not fitting. I figure, from the Handbook, that this is the 1024 cylinder problem. I tried setting up two root partitions at low cylinder numbers, but the install complains about not being able to mount /mnt/dev/X on /mnt/usr, or takes over the 2nd root as /usr, which is too small. In this case I had set up partitions as: small unused partition Win98 -release / (mount point /) -current / (mount point /new) -release swap -current swap -release /usr (mount point /usr) -current /usr (mount point /newusr) So the install tries to put everything in the -release /, or puts /usr into -current /, although the mount point of /usr is explicitly defined in the labeling. I am interested in the performance between the aironet and the wavelan II pcmcia cards. Could you give any info about them. I know that the columbia guys have got drivers for them so I would appreciate any experience you may have with them. Also which one would you consider best buy? By default (last time I checked, anyway), we restrict ourselves to apm 1.0, which will prevent power down from working properly. -- Daniel C. When I suspend it, it will not wake up. What I mean by this is that when I press a key, I hear the disk spin up, but the screen remains dark, and the pccard ethernet controller does not light up. At this point, all that I can do is to reset the system. Also, it does not matter how the machine is suspended (zzz, or magic key sequence, or power-shortage, etc) or awakened (timer, keypress). I've tried enabling killing apmd. I've tried adding/removing PCIC_RESUME_RESET. I've tried using the new ata driver & the old wd driver. Nothing seems to help. I was hoping somebody might have some ideas.. I've included my kernel config file, as well as the /var/log/messages output. Note that I compiled apm.c with -DAPM_DEBUG so as to provide more information. Sep 29 12:14:59 kedem-pc /kernel: Copyright (c) 1992-1999 The FreeBSD Project. [ Shot in the dark ] This happened to me in -stable (a long time ago, back when stable when 2.2.8) when someone added in a cli call just before the APM bios was called. The APM code in -current is *way* different, so it's possible that this isn't the problem, since it's not use VM86 mode. However, alot of folks have been playing with the segment descriptors as of late, so it's possible that they might be broken again. Did this every work previously, or is this the first time you've tried this on the box? This option appears to pre-dump the contents of memory to the hibernation file when you do a suspend. The only other glitch is that if I use the magic key sequence or zzz to suspend, then the machine wakes up immediately after the dump of memory to the disk is done. But I (or rather the machine's owner, a prof here) can live with typing 'apm -z' rather than hitting the suspend key.. Things which work in 3.3 work just fine. Such as Mice, Zipdrives, ActiveWireInc.com and so on work just fine. Things like Serial, Ethernet and paralel converters do not of course, as they are not supported in the main branch.
