"actively involved" is probably overstating the case a little bit. I'm subscribed to the Davenport mailing list, , where DocBook discussions happen, and there are a couple of DocBook RFEs (Requests For Enhancement, similar to our PR database) open to me for some of the extensions we've made to the DTD (124 and 125, visible at http://www.docbook.org/rfe/). But yeah, if people want to funnel any comments about DocBook 4.0 through me to the DocBook maintainers that's fine. N -- Internet connection, $19.95 a month. Computer, $799.95. Modem, $149.95. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. Save it somewhere (/tmp ?), check out the doc/ tree somewhere else, and then do: % cd doc/en*/books % cp -rp handbook developer-handbook % cd developer-handbook % cp /tmp/book.sgml . % make add 'FORMATS=...' to the last line depending on your taste. This uses the existing Handbook content for a few bits and pieces, and puts together a sample structure for how the Developer Handbook might look. I'll post a separate message in a minute with a URL for a pre-built version of this for people to look at, and make comments on. If we can try and keep comments to that thread I'd be grateful. Rough consensus is that chunks of the existing Handbook should form parts of a new "FreeBSD Developer Handbook", to cover information useful to FreeBSD developers (and developers using FreeBSD). Specifically, the sort of people who inhabit -hackers. http://people.freebsd.org/~nik/developer-handbook/index.html (or /book.html if you want one big file) shows a very early cut at how the Developer Handbook might be structured. It includes some content culled from the current Handbook. What I'd like is feedback on this structure (which is flexible and open to change) from the developers, along with suggestions for extra material that should be included. I'm sufficiently removed from the development code face to be totally unsure about the best way to organise topics from a developer's point of view. Any and all suggestions welcome. I think there are many basic pieces of info which would be helpful on this site. Some suggestions. -Add a section of what comes with FreeBSD out of the Box. Yes this should be common knowledge for someone who has been using FreeBSD, but not for newcomers. In particular a reference to look at the languages ports (or other relevant port categories) would be very benefitial. -Sections on creating ports and packages. -Mention header files/make files which are used by programs when compiling under FreeBSD. This is important in particular for port developers. -Do a quick overview of where sources reside, both userland and Kernel. -Explain how to submit enhancements and fixes. -Talk about the CVS repository -Pointer to CVSup on the current Handbook or pointer to the Cvsup URL. Some of these suggestions may not seem "techie" enough, but getting to know the environment where one is going to program is just as needed as having details about kernel, libraries and such. I want to stick Poul's struct bio paper in there, so commit it already. :) Seriously, this is a great thing, and with regular prodding of -hackers and -committers (and possibly -arch) we should be able to get a lot of the empty sections fleshed out. > Any and all suggestions welcome. > > N > -- -- John Baldwin -- http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ PGP Key: http://www.cslab.vt.edu/~jobaldwi/pgpkey.asc "Power Users Use the Power to Serve!" - http://www.FreeBSD.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Apr 11 23:31:46 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from freebie.lemis.com (freebie.lemis.com [192.109.197.137]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B06CF37B7CA for ; Tue, 11 Apr 2000 23:31:40 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from grog@freebie.lemis.com) Received: (from grog@localhost) by freebie.lemis.com (8.9.3/8.9.0) id QAA37475; Wed, 12 Apr 2000 16:00:43 +0930 (CST) Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 16:00:43 +0930 From: Greg Lehey To: Eric Ogren Cc: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: [Jonathan Michaels]: re cutting edge patch Message-ID: <20000412160042.L35391@freebie.lemis.com> References: <20000411151206.E304@earthlink.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0pre2i In-Reply-To: <20000411151206.E304@earthlink.net> WWW-Home-Page: http://www.lemis.com/~grog X-PGP-Fingerprint: 6B 7B C3 8C 61 CD 54 AF 13 24 52 F8 6D A4 95 EF Organization: LEMIS, PO Box 460, Echunga SA 5153, Australia Phone: +61-8-8388-8286 Fax: +61-8-8388-8725 Mobile: +61-41-739-7062 Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Tuesday, 11 April 2000 at 15:12:06 -0400, Eric Ogren wrote: > > Sorry all for spamming the list, but I don't know of any other way to do > this. > > This is just a quick message to Jonathan Michaels > ; Jonathan, I have read and replied to both of the > emails you have sent me. In fact, when I first approached Addison-Wesley for permission to reproduce the chapter, it was novice end-users that I had in mind. Certainly, we could reference the chapter from within the Developer's Handbook, but it's certainly not developer-centric at all. Ciao, Sheldon. Structured information standards (and the Emacs PSGML mode) already do give a fair amount of physical formatting to what is plain text, and whitespace commits are a (sometimes) necessary evil. I'd welcome something to minimize their impact, so long as it didn't impact creativity or flow. Well, the question is more "Do I want to change my email address now, going through the procedure of unsubscribing/resubscribing/giving out my new email address to people, and then go through the same thing again in September (college)?" That, and, because I live in the middle of nowhere, there are very few ISPs that have a POP in my area, and those that do are usually either more expensive or don't have a flat rate. I am of course no supporter of spam, and if I wasn't relaying through earthlink's SMTP servers I wouldn't be surprised when my email got rejected. However, I am not so virulently anti-spam that I think it is justified to block a major ISP. It's not like earthlink is a 5 user ISP, where you may catch one user in the anti-spam crossfire; I would think that there are a good deal of non-spammers who use earthlink. Of course, my less-militant view on spam may be because I do not run an ISP myself, so I don't have to deal with 3*10^8 messages from spammers a day (instead, only 20), but... I'm sufficiently removed from the development Perhaps add a few basic things for people fairly new to BSD (or even UNIX programming in general). BSD things would include the err functions, queue.h macros... general UNIX things could include various IPC bits and pieces, sockets etc. Perhaps pointers to some of this stuff as reasonable tutorials already appear on the web...things like the GTK tutorial could get a link. The next question is who will write these things so I'll bow out now :-) Thanks, Andrew To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Apr 13 5:14:29 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from quartz.ocn.ne.jp (quartz.ocn.ne.jp [203.139.160.169]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6B64537BBEC for ; Thu, 13 Apr 2000 05:14:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from hatumi@quartz.ocn.ne.jp) Received: from mygate (p18-dn03uozu.toyama.ocn.ne.jp [210.190.218.211]) by quartz.ocn.ne.jp (8.9.1a/OCN/) with SMTP id VAA09058 for ; Thu, 13 Apr 2000 21:14:13 +0900 (JST) Message-ID: <002601bfa541$c8f945a0$0c01a8c0@myfamily.net.jp> From: "Kobayashi" To: Subject: =?iso-2022-jp?B?GyRCJSQlcyU5JUghPCVrO34hIjpGNS9GMDhlISJFU0NmJEcbKEI=?= =?iso-2022-jp?B?GyRCRGQ7XxsoQiAbJEIkTkR7QDUbKEI=?= Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 20:59:39 +0900 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0020_01BFA58B.2E9C5DE0" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2919.6600 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2919.6600 Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0020_01BFA58B.2E9C5DE0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-2022-jp" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit PC-9821Xe CPU$B!!!'!!(BAMD$B!!(BA$B#m(B486$B!_(B4 $B!!!Je5-$G%$%s%9%H!<%k8e!":F5/F0$7$?$N$G$9$,%+!<%M%k!)FbMF$O%(%i!<$i$7$-$b$N$OL5(B $B$$$h$&$G$9$,!"(B $B%O!<%I%G%#%9%/=hM}8e!"#n#p#x(B0$B!!#f#l#a#g#s!!(B0$B#x(B1$B!!#o#n!!#i#s#a(B $B#n#p#x(B0$B!'!!#I#N#T!!(B16$B!!#i#n#t#e#r#f#a#c#e(B $B$GDd;_$7$F$7$^$$$^$9!#(B $B$I$J$?$+65$($F$$$?$@$1$^$;$s$+!)(B $B$A$J$_$K%$%s%9%H!<%k$O=i$a$F$G$9!#(B ------=_NextPart_000_0020_01BFA58B.2E9C5DE0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-2022-jp" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Other security goodies have their own sections, but all of the ssh information is found in the general "Securing FreeBSD" section. Even S/Key, which, like ssh, is included by default, has its own section. This leads to two observations/suggestions: 1) It's hard to find the information on ssh because it doesn't show up in the TOC. 2) I think a separate section on both how to set up and how to use SSH would be nice. Things like how to set up ftp via ssh would be good. I know that information is elsewhere, but it's awful nice to have one place to go for all the good info... I'm not sure what to do about (1) that doesn't require also fixing (2), and that would probably require rewriting the "Securing FreeBSD" section as well. I haven't even had time to post a list of typos I made about 10 days ago, so I ain't volunteering for nuttin' at the moment. I hope this is the right place to submit it, but if not, please let me know. A copy of this (for better viewing) is at http://draenor.org/ipfw Something like this is missing from the FAQ and handbook (or if it's there I certainly missed it) so perhaps it could be included with a bit of work?? Thanks, Marc IPFW and NATD over a dynamically assigned IP over PPP connection ================================================================ This page serves to document how to setup a firewall using a PPP dialup with FreeBSD and IPFW. If there are any problems with this page, please email me. The page was simply created as a reference to users who need more information than that provided in the handbook. It deals specifically with firewalling over a dialup. The first thing you'll need to do is recompile your kernel is FreeBSD. If you need more information on how to recompile the kernel, then the best place to start is http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/kernelconfig.html. You need to compile the following options into the kernel: IPFIREWALL IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE_LIMIT=100 IPDIVERT IPFIREWALL <--> tells the kernel that you want to enable IP firewalling. IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE <--> tells the kernel that you want verbose logging. IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE_LIMIT <--> specify the amount of repeated messages before IPFW stops logging the attempt. IPDIVERT <--> this is required in order to divert packets with natd. Don't reboot once you have recompiled the kernel. Hopefully, we will need to reboot just once in order to complete the installing of the firewall. We now need to make some changes to /etc/rc.conf in order to tell it about the firewall. Simply add the following lines. firewall_enable="YES" firewall_script="/etc/firewall/fwrules" natd_enable="YES" natd_interface="tun0" natd_flags="-dynamic" ppp_enable="YES" ppp_mode="auto" ppp_nat="NO" ppp_profile="YOURPROFILE" For more information on what the above do take a look at /etc/defaults/rc.conf. Make sure to change ppp_profile name to match your profile in /etc/ppp/ppp.conf We're nearly done now. All that remains now is to define the firewall rules and then we can reboot and the firewall should be up and running. I realise that everyone will want something slightly different when it comes to their rulebase. What I've tried to do is write a rulebase that suits most dialup users. You can obviously modify it to your needs by simply using the following rules as the foundation for your own rulebase. Please note that the following while I've tested it rather extensively may not the most perfect rulebase. :) First, let's start with the basics of firewalling. What you want to do is deny everything by default and then only open up for the things you really need. Rules should be in the order of allow first and then deny. The premis is that you add the rules for your allows, and then everything else is denied. :) Now, let's make the dir /etc/firewall. Change into the directory and edit the file fwrules as we specified in rc.conf. Please note that you can change this filename to be anything you wish. This guide just gives an example of a filename. Now, let's look at a sample firewall file, and we'll detail everything in it. <-------------------- Start Here -------------------> # Firewall rules # Written by Marc Silver (marcs@draenor.org) # http://draenor.org/ipfw # Freely distributable # # # Define the firewall command (as in /etc/rc.firewall) for easy # reference. Helps to make it easier to read. # # fwcmd="/sbin/ipfw" # Force a flushing of the current rules before we reload. # # $fwcmd -f flush # Divert all packets through the tunnel interface. # # $fwcmd add divert natd all from any to any via tun0 # Allow all data from my network card and localhost. # # $fwcmd add allow ip from any to any via lo0 $fwcmd add allow ip from any to any via fxp0 # Allow all connections that I initiate. # # $fwcmd add allow tcp from any to any out xmit tun0 setup # Once connections are made, allow them to stay open. # # $fwcmd add allow tcp from any to any via tun0 established # Everyone on the internet is allowed to connect to the following # services on the machine. This example shows that people may connect # to ssh and apache. # # $fwcmd add pass log tcp from any to any 80 setup $fwcmd add pass log tcp from any to any 22 setup # This sends a RESET to all ident packets. # # $fwcmd add reset log tcp from any to any 113 in recv tun0 # Allow outgoing DNS queries ONLY to the specified servers. # # $fwcmd add allow udp from any to x.x.x.x 53 out xmit tun0 $fwcmd add allow udp from any to x.x.x.x 53 out xmit tun0 # Allow them back in with the answers... :) # # $fwcmd add allow udp from x.x.x.x 53 to any in recv tun0 $fwcmd add allow udp from x.x.x.x 53 to any in recv tun0 # Allow ICMP (for ping and traceroute to work). You may wish to # disallow this, but I feel it suits my needs to keep them in. # # $fwcmd add 65435 allow icmp from any to any # Deny all the rest. # # $fwcmd add 65435 deny log ip from any to any <-------------------- End Here -------------------> You now have a fully functional firewall that will allow on connections to ports 80 and 22 and will log any other connection attempts. Now, you should be able to safely reboot and your firewall should come up fine. If you find this incorrect in anyway or experience any problems, or have any suggestions to improve this page, please email me. The online version of the handbook says "This handbook covers the installation and day to day use of FreeBSD Release 4.0." however, the zipped version still says version 3.2 and it has timestamp of Aug 15, 1999. I want to print the PDF handbook and would like to have the latest version. Please let me know when the handbook version 4.0 PDF will be available.
