It's possible that with a 1542B (which is *really* buggy) and a very old 8200 this person is in bad shape. If there's a problem with the tape can rdd contact me directly with the precise details? sorry if I missed it earlier, and no, I'm too busy to scan the archives, but based upon their input, and the PR I asked Grog to file, I can decide whether to move that fix up the request stack or not. Also- if it was a SCSI tape issue, it's been being discussed on the wrong mail list. Actually, Greg has tweaked things so that you can put / on a Vinum array. The problem is that your boot path up to the mount of / needs to be reliable, and that means BIOS support. > I'm about to order a few Single Board Computer (SBC) systems which all = > have sockets for an M-Systems DiskOnChip (DOC) Solid State Disk. IDE hotswap (particularly if you swap in a disk that's not an *exact* replacement for the disk you took out) is a bit dodgy. If you have a PCI slot, I would recommend looking at 3ware's new 6x00 series controllers. ATA-66, hotswap, reliable bootpath, cheap, etc. The 5x00 controllers are even cheaper, but don't do hotswap. -- ... every activity meets with opposition, everyone who acts has his rivals and unfortunately opponents also. Another parameter to try is enabling transmit flow control. The attached patch should do it for the -current driver, I think. I haven't really tested this to see what effect it has, and it'll only work with Tigon II boards. (The Netgear board is a Tigon II board.) Hmm, I didn't have any problems with the 53C876 or the 53C896 on a Proliant 3000 or Proliant ML530, respectively. Boot the system using the verbose flag ('boot -v' at the boot prompt), and show us the dmesg output. Also tell us which drives are on which channels. According to a little Compaq book I've got here, the 6500 has a single integrated dual-channel controller, which is most likely the 53C876 (dual-channel 53C875). I have only used one channel on these so far, but the other channel looks like it is detected just fine. -- Chris Dillon - cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us - cdillon@inter-linc.net FreeBSD: The fastest and most stable server OS on the planet. Unfortunately his news <---> mail gateway is running in both directions, so anything sent to the gateway e-mail address is getting fed back into the list posting address and we're all seeing it. Whether this is acceptable practice is a policy question for the freebsd lists administrator to deal with. Now we use the D-Link since they fit in the 1U cases that we have (the Adaptec and others tend to be full length PCI ... atleast the Dec based ones were). I always thought $500 was to much and $300 for the Intel was also to much. Since I could buy Dec based cards for $30 dollars. $30 x 4 = $120 add some for the bridge and minus the stuff needed for 4 separate cards and $200 or whatever sounds like what it should be to me. BTW I bought my first one via onsale for $152. Note that www.shopper.com shows some listed for $147.99. So I'd try to get them for $150. Doug A. There was a discussion on Stable recently about NVidia and the release of **binary** drivers. If you can stand this attitude of NVidia, buy a TNT2 or GeForce 2MX : they are very good boards, and they work well under XFree (4.01). (check the existence of a PCI version, though !) You may also want to support manufacturers which are more open (matrox releases its doc, for example, and there is a source driver for 3D acceleration under XFree) TfH > > -- > Andreas Klemm http://people.FreeBSD.ORG/~andreas > http://www.freebsd.org/~fsmp/SMP/SMP.html > powered by Symmetric MultiProcessor FreeBSD > New APSFILTER 542 and songs from our band - http://people.freebsd.org/~andreas > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message -- Thierry Herbelot ASCII RIBBON CAMPAIGN /"\ Dir. technique LUCCAS AGAINST HTML MAIL & NEWS \ / tout le cable sur http://www.luccas.org PAS DE HTML DANS X un CV : http://perso.cybercable.fr/herbelot LES COURRIELS / \ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri Jul 28 16:43:18 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from wcug.wwu.edu (sloth.wcug.wwu.edu [140.160.164.200]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 4396F37B9DB for ; Fri, 28 Jul 2000 16:43:17 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from rshannon@wcug.wwu.edu) Received: (qmail 28421 invoked by uid 1146); 28 Jul 2000 23:43:16 -0000 Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 16:43:16 -0700 From: Ryan Shannon To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Highpoint 370 Message-ID: <20000728164316.A27429@sloth.wcug.wwu.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii User-Agent: Mutt/1.0i Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi. You don't say which version of FreeBSD you're trying to install; maybe the problem is there. I have an Inspiron 7500, and I've used it with a number of different cards, including Linksys, and I haven't had problems. I'd guess that you have a card with slightly different ID, one which isn't in pccard.conf. I'd suggest you try the install from CD-ROM and then get the card up and running afterwards. The Dell machine with which I'm working has a TI Cardbus controller whose default IRQ for management is IRQ 10. Under normal conditions, the kernel recognizes it and gives it this IRQ. This system also has an ESS sound chip at IRQ 5 and an ATI graphics accelerator (AGP) which uses IRQ 11. Neither can be reconfigured from the BIOS setup screen to use other interrupts by default, nor is there control over PCI interrupt steering in the BIOS setup. So, once the kernel starts up, IRQs 5, 10, and 11 are all spoken for. Now comes the PCMCIA configuration portion of /stand/sysinstall, which gives you three choices of IRQs which you can assign to the CardBus controller for use by cards you plug in. The choices are: A) IRQ 10 and 11 (the default); B) IRQ 5 and 10; or C) IRQ 11 only. See the problem? None of these combinations will work because the IRQs in question are all spoken for. I couldn't give the cards IRQ 3 (which was available because there was no sio1) or IRQ 12 (also apparently free), because these wer ethe only three choices offered. I worked around the problem by forcing the CardBus controller's management IRQ to 9 in the kernel configuration. I then chose option A above. (IRQ 11 isn't available, but IRQ 10 is, so I could get one card working.) I inserted an ep (3Com) card in the slot and it was recognized, so I could install over the Internet. It seems to me that /stand/sysinstall should offer a wider range of choices of interrupts for the PCMCIA cards, and shouldn't offer anything that cannot actually be used. Also, it's a good thing I had the 3Com card on hand, because the Ethernet NIC on the Linksys NIC/Modem card, model number PCMLM56, would not work. It's a NE2000 clone, which should be driveable by the ed driver, but apparently it wasn't recognized either during boot or when /stand/sysinstall gave it a tweak. I can't tell if this was because the PC Card controller only had one interrupt and gave it to the modem, or because the ed driver wasn't equipped to handle an NE2000 clone inside a PC Card. Can anyone help with this? --Brett To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message
