If I add lines to the hints file in -current I get the following probe info: pci0: at 31.2 irq 11 pci0: (vendor=0x8086, dev=0x2413) at 31.3 irq 10 pci0: at 31.5 irq 10 I can do 'MAKEDEV snd0' just fine, however any kind of operation (like cat /dev/sndstat, mixer, etc.) fails with "device not configured." I also tried making snd1 just in case, but neither works. According to the windows '98 device information from another machine with the same hardware this is a "Sound Max Integrated Digital Audio" card. I'm hoping it's just a case of adding a vendor ID to some code somewhere, so if someone wants to show me how to do that I'll be glad to work on it and send patches back. I'm using very recent -current code and updating is no problem. Thanks, Doug -- "Live free or die" - State motto of my ancestral homeland, New Hampshire Do YOU Yahoo!? I built straight out of /usr/ports/ and in direct DMA mode, I get a blank (black) screen and audio. When I select a menu button (and hold down mouse), video capture starts, but with SHM images. If I let go, video capture mode switches to direct again, but capture STOP. This worked fine with fxtv-0.48 and XFree86-3.3.6 Anything I can do to help/troubleshoot this further? Is there a newer version of fxtv? Thanks... I have been out of touch with this list for a while.. Glad to be back. I recently upgraded from fxtv 0.48 and XFree86 3.3.6 and 3.3-RELEASE to fxtv 1.02 and XFree86 4.0.1 and 4.0-RELEASE. Installed fxtv from ports (nothing special/different). Using the same S3 Virge card, like I was with my previous setup, the 1.02 version of fxtv direct DMA mode doesn't work, and my poor K6/266 can't keep up with the shm images mode at full 30 frames/second. Basicaly, I fire it up (no arguments), I get good audio (albeit a few dB weaker than before, but not objectionably). But video capture is STOPPED. Blank screen. (verified with -debug driver). I only get video if I select and keep open a menu selection... And then according to -debug driver (and the missed frames/sluggishness) I am using shm images. Or I get continous capture if I start with -disableDirectV (not affected by selecting or not selecting menus). Is Direct DMA broken in this configuration? Are special settings required in XFree or fxtv to make it work? Is there a newer version of fxtv? It looks like fxtv looks at c->enable quite a bit when deciding to CAPTUREStart/Stop, but I couldn't follow where/how this variable gets set at init, and how the transition from stopped Direct transfer mode to SHM Images is happening. Direct Mode worked perfectly under fxtv 0.48 with XFree86 3.3.6 and 3.3-RELEASE. Anything I can do to help troubleshoot this? The problem is with XFree86 4.x It does not have the same DGA modes XFree86 3.3.6 has and not all video card drivers implement DGA either. all the drivers. So FXTV tries to do the best it can, but XFree86 4.0, and 4.x are a problem. > Is there a newer version of fxtv? Nope. 1.02 is the latest. Rat-4 is designed around full duplex hardware. The previous pcm driver would open (some?all?) half duplex cards with open(.., O_RDWR). Querying the device caps check was the only way to be sure of full duplex capability. I committed a change last weekend that checks whether the driver is pcm or newpcm, and moderates it's behaviour accordingly. I've not had time (or access) to check this with other hardware yet. If you want to play the repository is anonymously accessible: http://www-mice.cs.ucl.ac.uk/multimedia/software/cvsanon.html If you test this and it'd be good to know if this works on other drivers. Alternatively if you have the code for an earlier RAT version you should be able to comment out the AFMT_FULLDUPLEX and AFMT_WEIRD checks in auddev_luigi.c. There's also a minor problem in the way rat attempts to deal with mixer loopback (at least with ES1370). The existing method worked for pcm, but does not for newpcm. I'm not yet sure if this is specific to this card, the way rat talks to the mixer, or it's just a change in the driver interface. The last code I looked at was 4.0-20000703 (newpcm looks great, btw). There look to be some new mixer goodies on the way. Unless someone picks up the gauntlet I'll wait and what happens with the new mixer calls before making changes. Kind Regards - Orion. <39808EEE.894B6DA7@isi.edu>Lars Eggert writes: > I've just compiled rat (from CVS) under FreeBSD-4.1. No. Comparing error messages reported against the current rat cvs code indicates open(O_RDWR) fails - "device busy". Assuming device is not already in use, it suggests the driver is half duplex. Are you able to 'cat /dev/audio' immediately before and after getting this error message? What is the output of 'cat /dev/sndstat'? BTW, Luigi's pcm driver had CARDS and README to give an insight into cards tested by developers, reports from users, the documentation was used, known problems, things todo, etc. Is there anything like this for newpcm? cheers - o. Define the DEBUG option in your kernel, you may have to add makeoptions -DDEBUG -g to the config file as well. Then add the device tdfx line. If you want to use the kld, the Makefile has directions on how to enable the debugging messages. you just uncomment a line in there, or add -DDEBUG to the make line. -- Coleman Kane President, UC Free O.S.
