I am trying to get your oppinions related with 3D/Xserver under FreeBSD - Accelerated X is a product from www.xig.com which is cool and runs without any problems. Support offered by them is really professional and cool. They now have Summit version of the same product which comes with OpenGL libraries and it is charged for specific video card ( example: if you have Radeon 8500 then you have to pay around 100USD some time limited offer and you get the drivers for that card. If you have another card you need a different driver and might cost different) Now Summit is only available for Solaris Intel and Linux Intel. I have several times tried to get the version for FreeBSD but xig's answer was without a minimal interest they would not provide support and development for Summit OpenGL on FreeBSD Question: Is anybody here interested to setup a list where people could sign and I could drop it to the main support guy, Bryan Chambers ? At least doing so we could see if there is any interest in OpenGL under FreeBSD and more possibilities than XFree86 as a X Server. People which are willing to pay could as well keep small market for products which runs under FreeBSD. In light of some recent attention to ESR's book, "The Cathedral and The Bazaar", on some Slashdot posts, maybe you might point out the differences [and similarities] between Linux and FreeBSD in that context as you answer the above questions. Or, what might be more important to a computer-literate audience, what the differences will be when FreeBSD 5.0 hits the streets. Seems to me that's when there will be some marked differences, indeed. Dave -- Windows: "Where do you want to go today?" Linux: "Where do you want to go tomorrow?" The FreeBSD boxes were newer, but weren't bogging down anywhere near as much as the Linux boxes. The linux boxes were maxed out on RAM, and had 1GB dedicated to MySQL, and no swap. Turns out that the Linux VM doesn't like to run without swap, and running without swap caused a significant difference in performance (3 orders of magnitude more "slow queries"). He also went on to allude to some issues with FreeBSD's 4.x threading model, with no data provided yet. Just another datapoint that monocultures are bad, even with OSes. :-) I don't have a URL handy, but it was on Zawodny's blog; Google should be able to find it. Z. How about this, as it tends to get a lot of comment/response on daily daemonnews and the like: What is the state/future of Java support for FreeBSD? Note that I don't do Java development, so it's merely curiosity, but java _apps_ have been pretty useful to me in other contexts. You could also mention or answer what your favorite apps for common uses are: Favorite word processor, text editor (if different), web browser, cd-burning front-end, desktop environment (KDE, GNOME, etc.). You've probably covered some of this in your other writings, which I've enjoyed BTW, but your answers might provide insight into what runs (best/at all) on FreeBSD. It's not a mystery to us, but might be to some non-BSD people.
