My kernel clock would race. Within 15 minutes from setting localtime with date(1), my localtime would be more than .5 hrs ahead of where it should be. When I built my kernel, I didnt use the default value "options HZ=100". I actually used "options HZ=10". Is this the cause of my racing clock? Looking through the kernel cfg now, I may have misunderstood, and thought "a smaller granularity" meant I had to lower the value of the default HZ :) Any thoughts? Also, why cant a windows client(outlook express) send mail to this list? does anyone else have this problem? Thx. Vince (I have no witty additive!) I see: /kernel: arp: 00:01:02:8a:72:d8 is using my IP address XX.XXX.XXX.XX (XX = outside IP-address) The mac-address is the outside interface of the DMZ-bridge. Both outside interfaces are connected to the same switch. The interesting part is that this is triggering a virus response from the MAILER-DAEMON@sauron.icrt.cu. I have several email addresses and they have virus scanner but aren't seeing anything. I changed the subject. They updated sendmail a while back. Did you update the config files for it after the system upgrade using mergemaster? Have you tried upgrading to the latest 4.6-rc? If you reboot manually it'll crash at the same time the next day (ie, 24 hours after the reboot). Here's the log of reboots during April. You see it crashed every day between the first and the 16th. Then it didn't crash for 10 days. I rebooted manually on the 26th at 20:19, and it started crashing every day again. # last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 reboot reboot ~ Tue Apr 30 20:17 reboot ~ Mon Apr 29 20:17 reboot ~ Sun Apr 28 20:19 reboot ~ Sat Apr 27 20:19 reboot ~ Fri Apr 26 20:19 reboot ~ Fri Apr 26 19:49 reboot ~ Tue Apr 16 11:10 reboot ~ Tue Apr 16 11:03 reboot ~ Mon Apr 15 18:33 reboot ~ Sun Apr 14 18:37 reboot ~ Sat Apr 13 18:41 reboot ~ Fri Apr 12 18:45 reboot ~ Thu Apr 11 18:48 reboot ~ Thu Apr 11 18:00 reboot ~ Tue Apr 9 19:50 reboot ~ Mon Apr 8 19:54 reboot ~ Sun Apr 7 19:58 reboot ~ Sat Apr 6 19:00 reboot ~ Fri Apr 5 18:58 reboot ~ Thu Apr 4 18:58 reboot ~ Wed Apr 3 19:02 reboot ~ Tue Apr 2 19:00 reboot ~ Mon Apr 1 19:00 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Sun Jun 2 13: 7:34 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from rutger.owt.com (rutger.owt.com [204.118.6.16]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6D34237B409 for ; Sun, 2 Jun 2002 13:07:12 -0700 (PDT) Received: from owt.com (owt-207-41-94-232.owt.com [207.41.94.232]) by rutger.owt.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id NAA28619; Sun, 2 Jun 2002 13:02:02 -0700 Message-ID: <3CFA79B9.4060104@owt.com> Date: Sun, 02 Jun 2002 13:02:01 -0700 From: Kent Stewart User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.4.1) Gecko/20020314 Netscape6/6.2.2 X-Accept-Language: en-us, es-mx MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Charlie Root Cc: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: References: <200206021946.g52JkgoJ022771@pcp01840552pcs.owngsm01.md.comcast.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Charlie Root wrote: > From: > To: "Kent Stewart" > Cc: > References: <200206021906.g52J6Nnx022102@pcp01840552pcs.owngsm01.md.comcast.net> <3CFA70E3.9020809@owt.com> > Subject: Re: Email Problems > Date: Sun, 2 Jun 2002 15:44:37 -0400 > MIME-Version: 1.0 > Content-Type: text/plain; > charset="iso-8859-1" > Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > X-Priority: 3 > X-MSMail-Priority: Normal > X-Unsent: 1 > X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4807.1700 > > My latest build was 4.6-RC, dated May 31st, and yes , I did use mergmaster. > All my personal mail is received on a win95 machine, but I cant email > freebsd-stable@freebsd.org from the win95 machine, for whatever reason. No, I think the Cuban Adminstrator hit his Peter principal and is well beyond his knowledge of virii. That fact that he is doing this is beyond my knowledge. I can point a shaky finger his way but can't tell him what to do. I sent them an email that they were false detecting a virus. I am living the subject blank to see if I get another detect. I think your win95 problem may be firewall related if you are using a firewall on your FreeBSD machine. I am sending this through my FreeBSD machine from a W2K server. I had to tweak things. Are you trying to send directly to freebsd-stable@freebsd.org? If so, it sounds like you need to use your ISPs email facility. Back in January the fan of my server stopped working, and my computer exhibited that same behaviour, e.g. a kernel panic ever 24 hours or so, then the box would reboot and keep working until next day. Since your reverse lookup isn't icomcast.net, FreeBSD drops your email. I did get another email from the Cuban mail-daemon. All I have to do is send you an email with a blank subject. If I change the subject to "Email Problem", I don't get a response from the Cuban site. They have to be doing something dumb but I don't have any idea what it is. Here it goes: Using 4.6-RC, [and I seem to remember having the same problems with -current, on a different mobo/cpu, but with the same physical cdrom unit] I cannot copy large files between my cdrom and a fat32 partition. The cp process hangs in biord (or so says ps axl), and the file on the win partition is 0 in size. I have been thinking about hardware errors, but Windows seems to work OK with this cdrom unit. I have tried different CDs, some cd-r, recorded by a friend, and some original software CDs. All files were located in the root directory of the cdrom. I have not been able to link this to a certain file size, but I seem to remember -current copying about a megabyte or so before hanging in a similar manner. However that was a rather old -current (about six weeks ago). The computer does not hang, as I am writing this from exactly that computer (but on a different VT). Attached is my dmesg (can anyone tell me why I get to see both my old and new dmesg, even after a reboot? I do not recall this happening on the other CPU/mobo). This will never happen in RELENG_4 (either with perl or sendmail). Removing sendmail is not likely to happen in -current either, since sending mail is an essential part of a unix system, whereas perl is not (in most cases). Every time this discussion comes up in the past people mention how nice it would be if you could do things like choose your mailer at install time. Everyone agrees that this is a good idea, but no one has come up with the code yet. Hope this helps, Doug -- "We have known freedom's price. We have shown freedom's power. A syslog message has potentially crossed multiple networks and forwarders by the time it reaches the final server. The time it takes to go from client to server may be non-negligible. The timestamp of the server may not be accurate enough for certain uses. There is also the case of a single client sending messages to multiple servers. It would be weird to have different timestamps on the same message at each server. If you want to get server timestamps in addition to the one provided by the client, it's not much work to get syslogd(8) to add another timestamp of its own. Of course log entries like, Jun 8 16:33:58 Jun 8 16:33:58 buttercup ipmon[42]: 16:33:57.990246 de0 @0:5 b 68.60.184.121,4435 -> 12.234.91.48,1433 PR tcp len 20 48 -S 1408909047 0 16384 IN Would look like they are obsessing a bit over the time. ;) -- Crist J. I have a dual Athlon MP system with about 3G of RAM, and I want to be able to use a good portion of this RAM in a single process. But I also want to use linuxthreads so that I can take advantage of the two processors. But linuxthreads uses setrlimit, and crashes in a similar way to my simple program. I looked at the kernel code in /usr/src/sys/kern/kern_resource.c at the function dosetrlimit, which I guess is where the action takes place, but I have no idea what to make of it. -- Stephen Montgomery-Smith stephen@math.missouri.edu http://www.math.missouri.edu/~stephen To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Sat Jun 8 22:18:49 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from magnesium.net (toxic.magnesium.net [207.154.84.15]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 88A8737B406 for ; Sat, 8 Jun 2002 22:18:46 -0700 (PDT) Received: (qmail 89191 invoked by uid 1001); 9 Jun 2002 05:18:45 -0000 Date: 8 Jun 2002 22:18:45 -0700 Date: Sat, 8 Jun 2002 22:18:45 -0700 From: Bill Swingle To: Gary D Kline Cc: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: can we use a mouse|pointer list?
