I just ran into this with adaptec. Yea I have the drivers but I am not allowed to migrate even for testing until the monitoring code (for raid arrays) has been ported by adaptec. Either the boot loader, or the partitioning system, or the kernel compilation and eventual compression for a cd-rom, are a paradise if compared to Linux. Moreover, the drivers' support for the most part of SCSI, ATA, RAID, LAN, is much more complete. It has been a problem for developers the infinite variety of unix versions. Linux has reproposed the same problems. FreeBSD gives us now the first chance of having a standard unix platform for software developers. People of Net and Open versions must accept this matter of fact in the next future. When an operating system has always all of the libraries in the same place, it will have the road open ahead. The license of an university is the best warranty for the independence of the basic operating system. Moreover, the hierarchical development of the system guarantees a solid standard. The wide database of the 'ports' offers an example. I'm neither a programmer nor an expert of unix, but I can quite foresee, FreeBSD will have a lot of success, day by day. It's only a question of time: believe me, and I hope you'll repeat as much as you can, FreeBSD is the unix for our future. As for the main desktop environment, the matter is unfortunately open. One person of our list was laughing at my unexperience. I can understand. I am an enthusiast, and I tell anybody about the operating system I like more. After all, I have been learning anything completely alone, starting from the laser cut of the metal plates of the computer's chassis. I have been ordering any component in the U.S., and so on with the operating systems and the manuals. I trust any BSD variant, even if I prefer one. I know this isn't the place for personal polemics, I just wanted to send a greeting to anyone here. As always .VWV. It will be done. I love this operating system, because it is ready for the best workstations' hardware. I have been in trouble whilst having Linux and Windows XP at the same time, with multiple-disk controllers. Moreover, I can't tell here all of the advantages I have found in 'Amnesiac'. With my best wishes VITTORI
