All I can find on the Netgear web site for the MA311 are the latest drivers which have been installed on the system with my PCI adapter (see details below). The PCI card on a win2K system as there is no currently available software for upgrading the firmware on the unix platform on which it will be used. I have cc'd this email to the freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org mailing list so that the response can be widely distributed. I have been told (thank you Doug) that the minimum Firmware which results in reliable function of the MA311 on unix is 1.4.9 but 1.5.6 is also available. I have been looking at the Linksys WPC11 and the Netgear MA401 PCMIA cards. If I were to buy one of those, would it work with a PCI adapter or ISA adapter (because I do not have a PCMIA bus) and if so, which one should I buy? If you want a PCI card, just get the MA 311 from Netgear. It has the same guts as the MA 401, and works quite well in freebsd. I posted recently on this, and included information about flashing the firmware in a windows machine before you install it in freebsd. Since Apple won't replace the range of serial numbers my ABS falls in, it is likely I'll have to replace it. My card inventory is an Orinoco Silver, and a Linksys WPC11, and the actual hosts are a battered but still ticking Sony 505tx, and an IBM T30, running -STABLE, win98, and Debian 3.0. I used the ABS plus wireless NIC to work where ever in my house my kids are fond of that day (sometimes even my office). So, recommendations please. Off-list is usually better than on, and I can summarize to the curious-also-clueless. Oh, the rest of my kit is -CURRENT, but all wire-line. The ReliaWave Upgrade Instructions http;//www.demarctech.com/techsupport/rw-wireless-cards-supp ort/firmware-upgrade-how-to.htm refers only to pcmcia cards - am I to assume that the WinUpdate installer (WinUpdate-0-7-0.zip)also copes with PCI cards? (I want to be careful b4 jumping in - I know you can fry flash if things are not done right!) 2. Similar query for the set up instructions http;//www.demarctech.com/techsupport/rw-wireless-cards-supp ort/free-bsd-setup.htm for FreeBSD which also only refers to pcmcia. You may get a little further if you offer this as a reward to a developer to write a driver. However as far as I can see Sierra Wireless don't publish enough information to do this properly. The 2 card AirCard 210, for example, is relatively straightforward to support. The Cellular Data card just needs to be detected and given power, the modem card looks like a serial port connected to a modem. It is given a sequence of AT commands to configure the Cellular Data Card and to make a call. The modem card can even be connected via a supplied cable to a POTS line. The AirCard 555/550, (also the 710 & 750), support much higher data rates with CDMA2000, (7x0 work with GPRS). Although everything is now on one PCMCIA Type II card there are two interfaces to control. A serial interface again looks like a modem, and AT commands can be used to control calls, send/receive SMS. Data transfer is through a NIC, which look like an Ethernet card. The registers for the NIC are not documented, though with a card to hand it may be possible decode how it works. Whilst the AT command set is documented it is insufficient to do things like configuring the cellular modem for a particular network. The AT command interface can also be disabled (locked). A proprietary, secret "CnS" or "Control and Status language" command set is used for many of the functions of the Windows "Watcher" program that manages the modem. Even though you know the unlock code CnS is the only method for locking and unlocking the modem. Let me explain my interest, particularly as this going to the FreeBSD mailing list too: I'm currently looking at how to support USB Comms Data Class for Wireless Mobile Communications Devices. I'm not aware of any such devices yet, but I'm sure they will appear this year. I would like FreeBSD 5.x to include all kinds of support for mobile phone devices: read/write address books; use as a wireless Internet link; send/receive faxes; stream audio for voice calls; act as a print server; send/receive SMS messages; send/receive picture messages; access the phone's memory e.g. for pictures taken with the built-in camera; etc... I haven't had one at home in more than 4 years now, except for the laptop that I get from work (which will work fine, I suppose, for the ma401). WRT the ma311 locking up my fbsd box to hardware reset, somebody mentioned that my running routed in quiet mode might somehow be causing a buffer overflow in the card. It's not clear to me that upgrading the firmware would solve this problem if it is indeed the case... Oh well, I don't need to run routed any longer so let's see if it happens again before I get a chance to flash. See 'man wi' for the appropriate additions to ifconfig. You may find /etc/start_if.wi0 a good way to set this up, as well. These are also places to enable WEP and set the keys. Note that there is a plan afoot to eliminate the capability of wicontrol to set up the card, so I'd stick to ifconfig. R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. I have a script I've written that lets you define a set of acceptable networks and priorities for each. This is useful for me, because I move between three or four distinct networks day to day, and at times I can see more than one. I'll be happy to share if you're interested, but it might be overkill for what you're doing. It's currently written in Ruby, so be warned. I'm porting to to sh. On a related note, can a bourne shell guru drop me a line and tell me how to for-loop over -lines- in a file instead of -words- in a file? I've tried changing the delimiter characters with no luck. :-) -Cliff L. None worked. Is there a way to check which IRQs are free? You say you're running 4.8? On my Satellite 220CDS, the PCI interrupt steering shtuff worked just peachy. With the docking station in place I've run four cards without issue (three NICs and a SCSI controller). Is this really a 220 you've got? Or have you changed anything in the pccard config? -Cliff L. The laptop I'm trying to use it on is a Dell Latitude C600. All appears OK when I insert the card, but after a few seconds, the system appears to hang (well, perhaps just keyboard and mouse input, but I can't move the mouse or type anything). I can remove the card and the system will start working again, and all my mouse movements and keystrokes will be unbuffered and executed. I get the following log entries upon inserting the card: Apr 19 16:56:45 sindri /kernel: pccard: card inserted, slot 0 Apr 19 16:56:51 sindri pccardd[108]: Card "D-Link"("DE-650") [Ver 01.00] [(null) ] matched "D-Link" ("/DE-6[56]0/") [(null)] [(null)] Apr 19 16:56:51 sindri pccardd[108]: Using I/O addr 0x240, size 32 Apr 19 16:56:51 sindri pccardd[108]: Setting config reg at offs 0x400 to 0x60, R eset time = 50 ms Apr 19 16:56:56 sindri pccardd[108]: Assigning I/O window 0, start 0x240, size 0 x20 flags 0x5 Apr 19 16:56:56 sindri pccardd[108]: Assign ed0, io 0x240-0x25f, mem 0x0, 0 byte s, irq 11, flags 0 --- (At this point, the system hangs) Upon removing the card, I get: Apr 19 16:57:04 sindri pccardd[108]: driver allocation failed for D-Link(/DE-6[5 6]0/): Device not configured Apr 19 16:57:05 sindri /kernel: pccard: card removed, slot 0 Apr 19 16:57:05 sindri pccardd[108]: ed0: D-Link (/DE-6[56]0/) removed. I have the same issue with this card whether I plug it in by itself, or with another card. Other PCMCIA cards successfully tested in the machine under the same release of FreeBSD, with the same kernel and pccard config are: - Orinoco Gold card (uses wi driver, all OK) - Xircom REM100 card (comes up as CEM56, uses device xe0, both modem and ethernet are good) - SMC EtherEZ PC Card (uses sn driver, all OK) - Some form of D-Link Intel Pro/100 clone (can't remember, but I did use this card at some point successfully). And I have used the DE-650 successfully in the past on the same laptop under Linux, and a Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT (yes, old, I know) under Linux. I've checked pccard.conf for a couple of things. According to a list posting I read elsewhere sometimes PCMCIA cards don't work due to memory conflicts. I tried changing the memory from '0xd4000 96k' to '0xd0000 16k' I also changed the list of IRQ's to those actually available in the machine. Neither of these changes (either alone, or in combination) make any difference. I also tried changing my kernel to use 'device ed' instead of the default 'device ed0 blah blah..' - this also had no effect. The dmesg output follows: Copyright (c) 1992-2003 The FreeBSD Project.
