It won't recognize HPT370 arrays at all (whereas older 5.1 Kernels work perfectly) and just goes on complaining it can't mount root from it. Promise RAID is somewhat better (can mount root from it but goes on telling me one of the subdisks is down when it clearly isn't) and finally it doesn't seem to even recognize disks connected to a VIA VT8325 southbridge at all. Silicon Image SATA seems to work at times (no RAID at all though) but then starts throwing timeouts under make buildworld loads whereas CVSUP works nicely as far as I can tell. Further, 4.9RC3 also gives me headaches with HPT370 but seems to work ok with Promise RAID, didn't try SATA or VT8325 so far. I'd definitely vote for delaying 4.9 until some more people have beaten on the ATA drivers in there (I don't have any Intel machines so I can't check those chipsets). I'll try the same system with 4.8 later today and report if its the hardware or the software (I'd guess the latter as older 5.1 builds worked nicely). I was get 'psmintr' sync errors, and sometimes the mouse would get disabled, necessitating a reboot. I have seen the psmintr errors occasionally before, but never had the mouse disappear. This started happening right after I saw some ATA changes in my cvsup, so I suspect ATA changes, committed (by luoqi) on Sept. 5 and after. The mouse had been rock solid for at least a year before this. - The were some 'mfc' comments in the ATA code specifically in the DMA code, sorry to rope Soren into this... the changes don't necessarily have anything to do with -current, but the comments on ata-dma.c, rev 1.35.2.33 did say MFC. - I was suprised to see -any- ATA changes during code slush... - The mouse seems to fail during heaving IDE activity, such as when I do a release build and the /usr/ports/distfiles gets copied. This is a high throughput situation, it's possible that the IDE code is now hogging the interrupt. When the mouse gets confused 'systat -vmstat' shows a sustained rate of about 100KB/transfer. - I do have a 'cursed' VIA 686b motherboard, which has caused mucho problems (like silent disk corruption) in the past until I found a bios (from Brazil!) that fixed it. This problem may only occur on machines like mine, but I did not have a problem until recently. Sorry to make so much noise right now, I just know that things like this tend to get fixed -right after- the release when a bigger population actually uses the system. - Mike H. CVSUP performed at: 2003.10.23.at.22.21.18 (EDT) Now, I want to save some folks some time here and dispell some of the usual reasons that are tossed my way when I bring up these 24 hour panics: 1) It is not happening at 3:00 AM, and I can run periodic anytime of the day without incident. 2) The panics happened in the past, as this time, almost exactly on 24 hours, regardless of the time of day of the last panic or reboot. 3) The panics do not happen to coincide with any specific task in cron, network activity, etc. I am seriously contemplating moving back to RELENG_4_8 since I have had so many problems with STABLE since the PAE import. This isn't to say that my problems are related to PAE, just that that's about the time that this craziness started. I hope that someone finds this information useful, and I am open to any suggestions that anyone would like to present. Now I am very confused. I was looking through my notes, and saw that I saw different behavior doing serial vs. VGA installs, so I installed 4.9RC4 via the physical (VGA) console, and it came up correctly. I then installed 4.9RC4 twice via serial console ("boot -hD"), and it was fine both times. I've since installed 4.9RC2 via VGA and serial 10-12 times (playing with BootEasy & no boot manager, and various other options), and it's been okay each time. Unless someone can figure out what was (but is no longer) biting me from the description, there seems nothing further to do on this issue at present. I'll sum up the history in hopes someone will have a clue what was wrong (bug report is "i386/58580: After sysinstall, F2 fails; wrong device specified for /?". My posting said: >>Booting [kernel]... >>root device disk0s4a: invalid >> >> >> >> >>Type '?' for a list of commands ... > > lsdev showed my disk2 properly, and I was able to unload, set >currdev, and boot successfully. There's obviously a critical element I haven't identified, but I wonder if it's related to BIOS/BTX level disk names (I don't know much about the conventions). Booting 4.9RC4 off the hard disk, I now see (this works): >BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.01 >Console: internal video/keyboard >BIOS drive A: is disk0 >BIOS drive C: is disk1 >ok lsdev >cd @ 0xff5c >disk @ 0xef68 > disk0: BIOS drive A: > disk1: BIOS drive C: > disk1s1: FAT-32 > disk1s2a: FFS > disk1s2b: swap > disk1s2e: FFS > disk1s2f: FFS > disk1s2g: FFS >pxe @ 0xd6d8 >ok show >LINES=24 >console=comconsole >currdev=disk1s2a: >interpret=ok >kernel=/kernel >kernel_options= >kernelname=/kernel >loaddev=disk1s2a: >prompt=${interpret} Booting 4.9RC4 from the CD-ROM, I now see (this also works): >BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.01 >Console: internal video/keyboard >BIOS drive A: is disk0 >BIOS drive B: is disk1 >BIOS drive C: is disk1 lsdev shows: >cd @ 0xff5c >disk @ 0xef68 > disk0: BIOS drive A: > disk0a: FFS > disk0c: FFS > disk1: BIOS drive B: > disk2: BIOS drive C: > disk2s1: FAT-32 > disk2s2a: FFS > disk2s2b: swap > disk2s2e: FFS > disk2s2f: FFS > disk2s2g: FFS >pxe @ 0xd6d8 currdev & loaddev are both "disk0s4a:" (which doesn't show up in lsdev, FWIW). Updated sources to the latest 4.8-RELEASE-p13. Started doing buildworld and my machine panicked. Tried a few more times with random panics. Same random panics occur if I build the kernel. After a bit of struggling I managed to get a GENERIC kernel built with debug symbols on the latest source. I did not manage to build or install world on the new sources, but the panics happen regardless of what kernel is running. I also updated to the latest -STABLE, managed to build a kernel and installed it. Same problem exists there aswell (although this might be caused by a kernel and world that are not in sync?). I installed 5.1-RELEASE to find the same problem exists there aswell. Can anybody perhaps give a hint in which direction to look or to make this go away? Thanks in advance! The initial installation went ok, but several of the 110 or so ports that I typically build failed this time. Technically the ports may not be part of the FreeBSD 4.9-release, but since a specific set is included in the distribution these errors may be of some interest: 1) /usr/ports/audio/mpg123: Building with "make WITH_NAS=yes WITH_ICONV=yes" failed because some referenced iconv header file was not already installed. The workaround is to install iconv before mpg123. 2) /usr/ports/audio/xmp: Installation generates and error message about not finding an xmms configuration file. The workaround seems to be to install xmms before xmp. 3) /usr/ports/games/cgoban: The compilation of net.c generates error messages about conflicting declarations of `butRnet_create' and `butRnet_destroy'. I have not attempted to debug this error. I don't know of any workaround. Everything else seemed ok, including the ICH5 SATA controller in native mode. I don't claim to have worked the system very hard. When the ppp program first connects to the ppp server, it generates a few error messages of the form: Warning: ff02:6::/32: Change route failed: errno: Network is unreachable The network connection works just fine in spite of the error. I suspect that the specified address is IPV6ish and the presumably broken facility might just be irrelevant since I don't use IPV6. In any case, I get this error message on 4.9-RCx but not on 4.8-Release using the same ppp configuration file and ppp server. We're having similar problems with a PowerEdge 2600, that probably has an identical controller and drives. I haven't had time to diagnose the problem but was able to do an install after removing all but one drive. After booting I was able to add the other drives and rescan the bus (camcontrol rescan all). I didn't verify that I could write to the drives, but camcontrol completed successfully and the drives appeared to be available. When I try to boot with more than one drive it pauses for a long time after "Waiting for SCSI devices to settle" and then prints out a bunch of errors before eventually rebooting. It looks like there's a problem when the SCSI driver tries to probe the disks. I haven't had a chance to try to track this down further, but I will try to get more details in the near future. Yes, this was a clean installation. (It was not an upgrade. The file systems were completely wiped by newfs commands and fresh contents were loaded from the 4.9-RC4 iso image.) I have a problem that = pops up with nearly every reboot of my machine (Dell Inspiron 7500). When the system is booting, I get a line (that I gather is fairly = common) that says "ata1-slave: ATAPI identify retries exceeded". = Unfortunately my computer most often decides to freeze (in the "I must = turn the power off and back on" sense) before this line is displayed: sio0 at port 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4 flags 0x10 on isa0 sio0: type 16550A sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 *** FREEZE POINT *** ata1-slave: ATAPI identify retries exceeded pccard: card inserted, slot 1 pccard: card removed, slot 1 Turning the power off and on *always* causes the computer to get past = the freeze point and boot fully. I've tried adding and removing various = devices from my kernel (at first I thought adding device pcm caused the = problem, but removing it did not help...I removed the parallel port = devices, which used to be initialized after the serial port devices, but = that obviously did not help either since it now simply freezes after the = serial devices). I don't know if it's somehow related to the pccard = lines that follow it, since I'm certainly not inserting and removing = devices as I boot up, but I figure that's likely just the slot = initializing. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions I'd appreciate it. Also, one more issue. I'm running Gnome 2.4 with GDM. I can hit Reboot = at the login screen and reboot just fine, but hitting Shut Down doesn't = shut down the computer. Instead, X seems to quit, then get restarted, = and then the screen goes blank (except that my display, while blank, is = flickering very slightly). Pressing a bunch of Ctrl-Cs and Ctrl-Xs and = Ctrl-Alt-Deletes gets it to reboot, but I'm not sure what's going on = here. When this happens I cannot get to the console by Ctrl-Alt-F1 so I = can't see what's happening. Any ideas, anyone? I won't worry about the messages then. I mentioned the suspend/resume problem only because it actually worked correctly when using option ForcePCIMode; I was shocked when it did and was hoping that your fix for AGP accelerated DRI would pull off the same trick. I should note here that I didn't see any of the panics other people did before your last iteration of the fix. I'm guessing it is because I didn't actually compile the code into my kernel but instead let it build new modules. Any idea why that would make the difference? I am also CC'ing -STABLE to see if anybody else can get this to happen. I only lose the mouse during -heavy- disk activity. If I build a release, /usr/ports/distfiles (which is 1.6 gig on my machine and 810 files) gets recursively copied into /usr/release. That's generally enough to absolutely kill the mouse. - I am attaching dmesg.boot and my kernel config. I have one optimization in /etc/make.conf, CPUTYPE=i686 and also the following, which is only supposed to affect ports. # port optimized cflags? WITH_OPTIMIZED_CFLAGS=yes I am remaking world w/o the CPUTYPE right now, and will post results soon with the new kernel is an hour or so. 1. I am definitely seeing systat -vmstat cruisng way past 64KB/t. I don't know if this is what is actually happening, but it's what I see. I also see about 150 TPS and 15 MB/s. Here are some numbers from stopping vmstat... KB/t 87.92 tps 140 <- these numbers multiply out correctly, MB/s 12.02 assuming 1024 byte K. %busy 100 87.92 * 140 / 1024 = 12.0203125 and interrupt at 3.9%, system at 9.9% Is there some way to capture vmstat screens? I tried 'script' and it's hash, and I can't use X - no mouse! This is with one disk, and no RAID. 2. Interrupt is about 7%, saw it go to 10% once. 3. No tagged queuing. 4. Don't think I am running PIO. No DMA failure messages. I will run a recursive diff on the copy to see if there are any data errors. 5. Problem is about the same, maybe a bit better lately. > Mike, I'm looking into this problem now. I eventually found at least part of the discussion in the -current archive. I interpret the discussion as follows: The 5.x UFS1 file system turns out to be slightly incompatible with earlier UFS file systems. The problem is only that it keeps the summary data in a different location in the superblock, but that is sufficient to make the file systems incompatible. There seems to be no interest in making them compatible. Suggestion: if FreeBSD 5 used a different clean flag and FreeBSD 4/5 always cleared the other's clean flag whenever they rewrote a superblock, the file systems would automatically be refscked whenever you switched between operating systems but not after a normal reboot.
