VMware Virtual Network is setup to automaticly bridge, 1 NIC in Host machine, 1 NIC in Guest Machine. Choose "Other" then "FreeBSD" for the Guest OS Accept Defualt Settings I begin an fresh Install With Either 4.10 or 5.2.1 Choose "Standard" Installation Use Automatic Partioning and slicing (A&Q, A&Q) Choose "User" install type and select "Yes" for Ports collection Select "FTP" install Choose any FTP mirror ****(Here's where the problems start)**** In FreeBSD 5.2.1 I see "Unknown Adapter Type" as the first item, then see the VMware PCnet as the second. I select the second Item. (FreeBSD 4.10 is OK) I say "No" to IPv6 I say "Yes" to DHCP I set host name to "ldap" The DHCP server is configured to give out 172.17.101.1 as the gateway, but this is no good to me, so I change the gateway to 172.17.101.11. I choose "OK" Install sucesffuly "looks up" the FTP server Install prepares disk, partitions and formats Installer says "Starting Emergency Holographic Shell....." (or what ever that says) Installer Attepmts to Log into FTP server, but fails. I go back and adjust my config, change my install media to "HTTP Proxy" I type in the proxy server's address I get Error, "Can't find Proxy" I try again with FTP I get error can't find address for FTP server. Reconfiguring my network has 0 effect. I got to the second console (ALT+F2) I see a messege towards the bottom about ifconfig saying that my network interface was brought down (don't exact text) I try rebooting the Virtual Machine, I do the same exact steps, end up with the same result in both freebsd 4.10 and 5.2.1. However... If I use DHCP and do NOT change the gateway address from 172.17.101.1 to 172.17.101.11, and I choose HTTP Proxy from the begining, Install works. If I don't use DHCP and manualy configure, install works. >How-To-Repeat: Use DHCP to configure Interface, change default gateway. Occurs every time. >Fix: Do not change the defualt gateway, or don't use DHCP. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jun 27 23:40:22 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C515E16A4CF for ; Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:40:22 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9FCD143D2D for ; Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:40:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i5RNeMeP014604 for ; Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:40:22 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i5RNeMWH014603; Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:40:22 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:40:22 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200406272340.i5RNeMWH014603@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, David Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37A0F16A4CE for ; Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:38:57 +0000 (GMT) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 30D0A43D1F for ; Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:38:57 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i5RNcuAE001006 for ; Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:38:56 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i5RNcuBB001005; Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:38:56 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200406272338.i5RNcuBB001005@www.freebsd.org> Date: Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:38:56 GMT From: David To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Subject: i386/68435: xl driver in freebsd 5.x X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 27 Jun 2004 23:40:22 -0000 >Number: 68435 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: xl driver in freebsd 5.x >Confidential: no >Severity: serious >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sun Jun 27 23:40:22 GMT 2004 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: David >Release: 5.2 >Organization: >Environment: 5.2-CURRENT #0: Fri Apr 9 14:44:19 EST 2004 >Description: the xl driver I'm using for my 3com manageable NIC's xl0: <3Com 3c905C-TX Fast Etherlink XL> port 0xa400-0xa47f mem 0xd5800000-0xd580007f irq 5 at device 10.0 on pci0 xl1: <3Com 3c905C-TX Fast Etherlink XL> port 0xa000-0xa07f mem 0xd5000000-0xd500007f irq 11 at device 12.0 on pci0 do not work on normal installations unless they are put in promiscious mode. tcpdump shows traffic as incoming but it is not acknowledged, but when in promiscious mode it works ok. xl0: flags=28943 mtu 1500 options=9 >How-To-Repeat: Just install the NIC without promisc. mode. >Fix: No correct fix is known. Can reboot, do various find and ls, will lock up process pretty quickly. Cannot kill, Ctrl-T shows "load: 0.08 cmd: ls 304 [sbwait] 0.00u 0.00s 0% 336k". During this I can still access same mounts to SCO on old RH Linux server right next to it that I'm trying to replace. >How-To-Repeat: Mount a directory over nfs and do some read activity, locks up within a few minutes. I'd be glad to provide more info if I know what to look for. Don't know if related to talking to the SCO server, but RH Linux box has talked to it for several years. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 29 07:40:13 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 721A216A4CE for ; Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:40:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 582F543D4C for ; Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:40:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i5T7eD24087040 for ; Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:40:13 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i5T7eDXv087039; Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:40:13 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:40:13 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200406290740.i5T7eDXv087039@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Jeff Connelly Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DBCAF16A4CE for ; Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:39:04 +0000 (GMT) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DC36043D1D for ; Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:39:04 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i5T7d48T023565 for ; Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:39:04 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i5T7d4ci023564; Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:39:04 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200406290739.i5T7d4ci023564@www.freebsd.org> Date: Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:39:04 GMT From: Jeff Connelly To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Subject: i386/68469: All recent versions of FreeBSD fail to boot on newer Compaq/HP laptops X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:40:13 -0000 >Number: 68469 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: All recent versions of FreeBSD fail to boot on newer Compaq/HP laptops >Confidential: no >Severity: critical >Priority: high >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Tue Jun 29 07:40:12 GMT 2004 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Jeff Connelly >Release: N/A >Organization: >Environment: N/A >Description: FreeBSD 5, 4, and 3, and some versions of 2, load the kernel but power off before booting. Affects newer HP/Compaq laptops. Full report at http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=amd64/67745 I'm reposting this bug under i386 because it is not an AMD64 problem. Affects Pentium 4 laptops as well as AMD64's under i386 mode. Compaq Presario R3000Z series, including the X1000, R3030, R3140US, and HP Pavilion zv5000z. A person more knowledgeable than I posted some technical details about this problem at http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-amd64/2004-June/001636.html . My apologies if this sort of reposting violates gnats-etiquette. My intentions are good: this bug hasn't gotten the attention it deserves categorized as amd64, and many Compaq Presario users want to run FreeBSD. I'm wondering if there is some conflict there. Anyway, I tried booting OpenBSD 3.5 on this box and it had trouble too; but it gave some useful information as to the "why." This is sometimes useful when changing network numbers, and one wishes to accept packets addressed to the old interface. If the address is on the same subnet as the first network address for this interface, a non-conflicting netmask must be given. Usually 0xffffffff is most appropriate. In short, change netmask 255.255.255.0 to netmask 255.255.255.255.
