No, actually I wrote that I was not interested in top of the line. I said I was/am cheap about it as I do not plan on using it too much. But no worries, I just wanted a little something for wireless for incidental uses. :-) > However, on a related note, I have a symbol card taken from a base > station that is recognised with the following /etc/pccard.conf entry > on -stable (entry added by me); > > card "Symbol Technologies" "LA4111 Spectrum24 Wireless LAN PC Card" > config auto "wi" ? > insert /etc/pccard_ether $device start > remove /etc/pccard_ether $device stop I too added this over the weekend and got it working nicely with a cheapo Belkin AP. However, it looks like although I get a notification when the lid is closed, I don't get one when it is opened again. I'm also worried that devd might not have time to run the script before the CPU stops. Any suggestions? Starting with a little bit of history, I want to let you know that I am a german student in applied science and since students have a huge lack of money, they need to look for good prices on computers. IBM made it. They're selling the R40e, a smart notebook with all the power and quality we expect from IBM. I've searched the mobile mailing list on issues on R40e, but didn't found many articles, so this document / briefing will be interesting to person who either are using a R40e with FreeBSD or want to buy one _or_ developers of technical genre (...). I bought it a couple of months ago and I am using FreeBSD for almost one year now (on different i386 machines, not only the notebook). Im not aware of all the problems that already got solved by persons, so the threads below are just my personal problems & solutions I approached by installing and playing around with FreeBSD [...]. To let you know: 4.9 doesn't support the PC-CARD (PCMCIA) at 32-bit for this notebook. (I have to mention: I didn't take a look at the custom / generic build kernel of 4.9 maybe this option is disabled ...) *-4.9 _doesn't_ know the onboard Broadcom driver set (located at the back of the laptop) while 5.2.1 _does_ and makes you able to forget about a PC-CARD (5.x supports 32-bit cards) for Ethernet services of any kind. The onboard graphic chip-set doesn't know the VESA mode for a better resolution on the terminals. (After a while I was fine with it, and if you become familiar enough with FreeBSD, you will use the X Windows system, especially for a notebook as its not a main-frame server system.) I didn't look for the onboard sound capabilities yet, because I mind to play music when trying to learn programming. Some ACPI errors occur at the booting prompt. http://mitglied.lycos.de/wildcat101/docs/dmesg.today (5.1-RELEASE ... I will upload a 5.2.1-RELEASE dmesg.today soon too.) I searched two weeks on this and started with: What is ACPI actually? Finally I didn't make any changes to any ACPI driver set, because it didn't make any major problems to the system. Best wishes, --- Ludwig Schreier From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Mar 2 01:34:03 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8418216A4CE for ; Tue, 2 Mar 2004 01:34:03 -0800 (PST) Received: from arginine.spc.org (arginine.spc.org [195.206.69.236]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0265843D1D for ; Tue, 2 Mar 2004 01:34:03 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from bms@spc.org) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by arginine.spc.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0CBDA654D3; Tue, 2 Mar 2004 09:34:02 +0000 (GMT) Received: from arginine.spc.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (arginine.spc.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 21986-03-19; Tue, 2 Mar 2004 09:34:01 +0000 (GMT) Received: from saboteur.dek.spc.org (82-147-17-88.dsl.uk.rapidplay.com [82.147.17.88]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by arginine.spc.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 636E765490; Tue, 2 Mar 2004 09:34:01 +0000 (GMT) Received: by saboteur.dek.spc.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 2546A18; Tue, 2 Mar 2004 09:34:00 +0000 (GMT) Date: Tue, 2 Mar 2004 09:33:59 +0000 From: Bruce M Simpson To: Ludwig Schreier Message-ID: <20040302093359.GE884@saboteur.dek.spc.org> Mail-Followup-To: Ludwig Schreier , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org References: <18199CB0-6C2B-11D8-BAD8-000A959B8846@t-online.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <18199CB0-6C2B-11D8-BAD8-000A959B8846@t-online.de> cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: "A IBM R40e report for FreeBSD users" or: "I want to buy a R40e, so is the R40e compatible with FreeBSD?" HOWEVER: I can't get any data trough what so ever. When I purposly use a wrong wepkey, things are more clearly wrong, since it does not "associate" and the LED will blink rapidly, as it should when it's trying to get the connection up. I'm curious if anyone has had any luck with the mini-pci version of this card. I think it should just need a hardware id, but i've not been successful at getting it detected. -James From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 4 23:34:25 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 39D5F16A4CE for ; Thu, 4 Mar 2004 23:34:25 -0800 (PST) Received: from relais-int17.globalintranet.net (mailgate2.globalintranet.net [212.234.67.17]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 63D6F43D49 for ; Thu, 4 Mar 2004 23:33:49 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from "") Received: from bal2.globalintranet.net ([10.255.7.141]) by relais-int17.globalintranet.net (Netscape Messaging Server 4.15) with ESMTP id HU3EGP00.CAB for ; Fri, 5 Mar 2004 08:36:26 +0100 To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org From: baudoux.i@sansen.fr Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2004 08:35:32 +0100 Message-ID: <20040305073532.AAA692@bal2.globalintranet.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: Re: Details X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: baudoux.i@sansen.fr List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 05 Mar 2004 07:34:25 -0000 Ne fait plus partie de la société From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 6 14:05:59 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 032B916A4CF for ; Sat, 6 Mar 2004 14:05:59 -0800 (PST) Received: from tfetuzex2.5sigcmd.army.mil (tfetuzex2.tuzla.tfeasg.army.mil [136.217.128.114]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6FBBA43D1D for ; Sat, 6 Mar 2004 14:05:57 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from peter.thoenen@email-tc3.5sigcmd.army.mil) Received: from email-tc3.5sigcmd.army.mil (tc3-net158-ws212.tuzla.tfeasg.army.mil [136.217.158.212]) by tfetuzex2.5sigcmd.army.mil with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2657.72) id GC5P2WFM; Sat, 6 Mar 2004 23:05:55 +0100 Message-ID: <404A4B3E.7050400@email-tc3.5sigcmd.army.mil> Date: Sat, 06 Mar 2004 23:05:50 +0100 From: "Thoenen, Peter Mr CN Sprint SFOR" Organization: Sprint - GSD User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Enigmail-Version: 0.83.2.0 X-Enigmail-Supports: pgp-inline, pgp-mime Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Panic: Alignment Fault + Current 5.2.1 + IBM Thinkpad X31 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: peter.thoenen@us.army.mil List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 06 Mar 2004 22:05:59 -0000 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Anybody ever actually got FreeBSD 5.x to work on their X31? I installed using a Thinkpad 770Z and moving the HD to the Omnibook 800CT but then it doens't recognise the HD. The error is that it can't identify the ATA drive.
