However, once in awhile I also want to connect it directly via Ethernet by physically hooking into my home network. In the rc.conf file I have both the ifconfig_xl0 and ifconfig_wi0 statements present. When I am mobile this does not present a problem and my laptop starts up nicely. However, if I startup the laptop when I am not connected to the Ethernet, the startup hangs for 2 minutes before continuing. When I comment out or remove the line containing the ifconfig_xl0 statement the startup is quick like it should be. How can I have both statements enabled so that it will automatically choose the right connection on startup without having it do a hiccup for two minutes when I am on the move, e.g. wireless? Thanks in advance for your help. -------------------------------------------- Kiffin Gouda, The Netherlands From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Dec 5 10:19:47 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B67AA16A4CE for ; Sun, 5 Dec 2004 10:19:47 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ares.strahov.cz (wireless.blueboard.cz [82.208.31.30]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 671A043D5A for ; Sun, 5 Dec 2004 10:19:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from lists@hosting50.cz) Received: (qmail 45444 invoked by uid 1002); 5 Dec 2004 10:17:29 -0000 Received: from lists@hosting50.cz by wireless.blueboard.cz by uid 89 with qmail-scanner-1.22 (clamscan: 0.75.1. spamassassin: 2.64. I am running it under 5.3 Stable and I've had no problems at all. Of course, every configurations different, so YMMV. Rest assured that I would have reported any problems to Tobias. (I am working on some enhancements, but to do what I really want to do will require enhancement to union mounts and I would not bet on my getting that done. -- R. I've been trying to get FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE going on a somewhat old Japanese laptop I have. Mostly it works well, but I have had no luck with the PCCard ethernet adapter. It is a Corega FEtherII PCC-TXD. After some searching I noticed a recent entry to the CVS for pccard.conf which appears to add support for this card by assigning it to the same entry as the FEther PCC-TXD. After fooling around with pccard.conf for a while, then realizing that it is no longer in use in this version (!) I recompiled the kernel to add support by copying the line for the FEther PCC-TXD in the appropriate files. This got me some lines from ed1, which was better than the I had been getting up to that point: ed1: at port 0x300-0x31f irq 9 function 0 config 7 on pccard1 ed1: [GIANT-LOCKED] ed1: Ethernet address: 00:09:41:7a:11:d4 ed1: if_start running deferred for Giant type NE2000 (16 bit) The MAC address even appears correct, so far so good. However, the link light doesn't come on, and if I try to get set up the interface using dhclient I get this: ed1: device timeout Two things I have noticed: First, my old Windows98 hardware info had this assigned on IRQ 11. IRQ 9 appears to be the same as the PCI bridge: cbb0: irq 9 at device 19.0 on pci0 Second, I have done a lot of searching and have found some discussions of this card on Japanese lists such as bsd-nomads (for example http://www.clave.gr.jp/ml/bsd-nomads/200211/msg00020.html ). The suggestion there was to add a line in if_ed_pccards.c (see http://home.jp.freebsd.org/cgi-bin/showmail/bsd-nomads/16468 ): ed_pccard_memwrite(dev, 0x3c2, 0x4); Which apparently does some twiddling of the PHY power down mode flag. Since I am brave/desperate/stupid I went ahead and simply hacked this into the ed driver to see if it would work. It did not. Finally, the Japanese lists also seem to suggest that the problem is that the FEther PCC-TXD is based on the AX88190 chip while the FEtherII PCC-TXD is based on AX88790, which has different bugs apparently. Several cheap cards use this chip I think. The names mentioned were PLANEX FW-300TX$B!"(BNetgear FA411NA$B!"(BBillionton LNA-100B and BUFFALO LPC4-CLX. Sorry for the long post, but does anyone have any information or ideas on getting this card to work? I'm willing to hack on my kernel if given a bit of direction. Thanks for any advice, Colin. It seems to me that an equally acceptable (and possibly better) strategy for FreeBSD would be a soft suspend to disk that is hardware agnostic. Linux seems to have done this. One way to implement this that has been discussed is to dump application memory to disk (possibly on the swap partition) ... some form of forced swapout (the opposite of the unswap). Then comes saving the kernel state. This is the somewhat more problematic thing ... since the running kernel has trouble saving itself. But we already have the "dump" process. Can the loader pick up on something that tells it to load the dump rather than the kernel? This may mean having an overly large swap partition, but this setup would preserve your environment across reboots ... and presumably make reboots quite quick. I'm not actually sure it is necessary, but the card does work with it in there. The real problem, after getting the card type recognized to start with, was that the special config function for AX88190 chipsets in ed_pccard_probe wasn't getting called (note how my original ed1: lines were followed by "type NE2000 (16 bit)"). I simply commented out the if that decided whether to call that startup function, and called it unconditionally. Now the card reports "type AX88190 (16 bit)", the link and 100M lights come on, and DHCP configuration and pinging works. Now I am going to go back and remove some of those device_printfs, and maybe experiment to see if that memwrite is actually necessary. I'd also like to figure out why that special code wasn't being called. I got a Nec Versa P520 and I got FreeBSD 5.3 The chipset is an intel pentium(R) M processor Ehm... When I try to install freebsd, I get an error at this line: PCI0: on Pcib0 I tried some other options in the menu. There is one option to get extra comments (or more detailed info) and then it freezes at this line: map[10]: type3, range 32, base, base 00000000, size 27, memory disabled. One time, it got a bit further at ap[14]: type 1, range 32, base 00000000, size 19, enabl And just behind the 'enabl' (without e!) there was the rectangle/block, not flickering...and yes, it froze again. I also tried it with ACPI disabled, but then I got this error: PCI0: on Pcib0 Same kind of error ;) What what what can I do? :) Greetings, Rick From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 9 03:51:29 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 01E2C16A4CE for ; Thu, 9 Dec 2004 03:51:29 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ultra6.eskimo.com (ultra6.eskimo.com [204.122.16.69]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B980743D5C for ; Thu, 9 Dec 2004 03:51:28 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from joji@eskimo.com) Received: from eskimo.com (joji@eskimo.com [204.122.16.13]) by ultra6.eskimo.com (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id iB93pRj9007859; Wed, 8 Dec 2004 19:51:28 -0800 Received: (from joji@localhost) by eskimo.com (8.9.1a/8.9.1) id TAA07958; Wed, 8 Dec 2004 19:51:27 -0800 (PST) Date: Wed, 8 Dec 2004 19:51:27 -0800 From: Joseph Olatt To: Kiffin Gish Message-ID: <20041208195127.A7673@eskimo.com> References: <001401c4dbce$df40fa60$9900000a@ZGISH> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5.1i In-Reply-To: <001401c4dbce$df40fa60$9900000a@ZGISH>; from kiffin.gish@planet.nl on Mon, Dec 06, 2004 at 09:05:02PM +0100 cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Touch pad settings like sensitiivty... I noticed a post earlier today for a 8600 that had acpi_video_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf. I added this and rebooted. Then when I type sysctl hw.acpi.video.lcd0.active=0 The LCD turns off for about a second, then comes back on. I'd like a small script or something like that that turns off the lcd and leaves it off until I hit a (specific?) key. Thanks, M. The extra write of 0x04 to 0x3c2 (shown below) appears to be necessary for the FEtherII PCC-TXD. Without it the card refuses to respond (the link light stays off and I get "ed1: device timeout" messages again). The other thing I have found is that ed_pccard_match is getting called and setting the flags it wants to set, but those flags are cleared before getting to ed_pccard_probe. static int ed_pccard_match(device_t dev) { ... if (pp->flags & NE2000DVF_DL10019) device_set_flags(dev, ED_FLAGS_LINKSYS); else if (pp->flags & NE2000DVF_AX88190) device_set_flags(dev, ED_FLAGS_AX88190); printf(" in ed_pccard_match flags=%08x\n", device_get_flags(dev)); return (0); Results in this in dmesg: in ed_pccard_match flags=00030000 ed1: at port 0x300-0x31f irq 9 function 0 config 7 on pccard1 But this code in probe shows the flags are no longer set at that point, which is why I had to force ed_pccard_ax88190 to be called manually. static int ed_pccard_probe(device_t dev) { int error; int flags = device_get_flags(dev); device_printf(dev, "pccard probe"); printf(" flags=%08x compare %08x.\n", flags, ED_FLAGS_AX88190); /* if (ED_FLAGS_GETTYPE(flags) == ED_FLAGS_AX88190) { */ error = ed_pccard_ax88190(dev); goto end2; /* } */ The output of dmesg shows: ed1: pccard probe flags=00000000 compare 00030000. Now I will try to figure out where these functions are called and why the flags are cleared between them. Perhaps it would be better to call match again at the beginning of probe (or use a similar approach to determine the device type at probe time)? Colin. I'm relatively new to FreeBSD and am having a bit of trouble getting Xorg up and running on my laptop. I've searched the handbook, FAQ, Google, and FreeBSD newsgroups to no avail. After following the handbook instructions to set up an xorg.conf =66ile (the command xorg -configure actually hangs my system, so I used both xorgcfg -textmode and xorgconf to generate the file) everytime I run startx(1) or Xorg(1) the system hangs. Ie: loading "via82c686" at the time it loads "sound". I am able to unload "via" driver, but not "sound". Not a big deal on laptop, for it could be rebooted. The machine is really slow. I wanted to install a really light OS such that the man who ones it can use it only for writing text and printing. I tried Linux but KDE or any other Window Manager couldn't start in 800x600. I am thinking for FreeBSD but which one would be better for this thing? 5.X or some 4.X version? How to recompile the kernel so it becomes lighter what options to add and which to remove from the kernel config? Please tell me where I can find information about this. What must I do to make this card work? Do I need to compile a new kernel, or the default one should work? The steps I've taken so far were: - Added the line pccard_enable="YES" to rc.conf; - Removed IRQ 5 (used by my sound card) from defaults/pccard.conf. pccard and xe drivers don't load. Thank you a lot for the attention. I am particularly interested in a 64-bit AMD based product, which a friend of mine now has on trial. I want 1920 pixels (wow!, it is truely movie quality, too.) Too bad I am too busy to watch 'em... Still, who wants not to have a DVD. Not me... I want something I can run FreeBSD on, WITH good support for both "hotspot" type cards and also I expect to purchase a deal from either Sprint or Cingular for use with one of the service deals they offer. So I want a 64-bit (fast!) laptop with hi-res graphics, and support for 802.11x hot-spot style cards, (builtin being better than PCMCIA cards,) and also a PCMCIA adaptor to accept an as-yet undetermined long-distance cell-tower connection. The rest is pretty usual, sound card, no floppies, etc... Laptops seem to be moving to power supply arrangements which make it impossible to run a laptop off of a car battery. (Now one needs a power inverter.) I guess I am old-fashioned, I like the cigarette lighter as a source of power. If I have to drop something, I'll take a 32-bit system. But computing power is pretty important to me. I have a preferrence of dealing with vendors that can deliver machines WITHOUT windoz. And will pay someone a little more for such equipment if necessary. Hi Cesar, I don't know the 300CT - is this an older model with 16-bit PCMCIA (ie. not CardBus) slots? If so, it might not work with the NEWCARD drivers that are the default in 5.3. The OLDCARD framework is still supported but not in the GENERIC kernel - you will need to build a new kernel from the OLDCARD config file (/usr/src/sys/i386/conf/OLDCARD). The RealPort card itself is definitely supported by the xe driver, so if we can get your system to recognise the card it should work just fine. Could you post a copy of /var/run/dmesg.boot from your machine to the list? We can check if there are any PCCARD drivers being loaded and whether it's worthwhile trying the OLDCARD kernel. I think so, because this is an old machine (Pentium 133 with 32 MB of RAM) I bought just to have some "mobile" processing power. :-) > If so, it might not work with the NEWCARD drivers that are > the default in 5.3. I am at work now, so I'll build a kernel with OLDCARD when I get home. > The RealPort card itself is definitely supported by the xe driver, so if we > can get your system to recognise the card it should work just fine. > Could you post a copy of /var/run/dmesg.boot from your machine to the list? > We can check if there are any PCCARD drivers being loaded and whether it's > worthwhile trying the OLDCARD kernel. I had checked the kernel messeges and found nothing with "pccard", so I guess that's the problem. To be honest, some months ago when I bought this machine, I tried FreeBSD 5.2.1 and could get the pccard driver working after building a custom kernel, but the network didn't start up anyway. So as I didn't have much time, I decided to wait for FreeBSD 5.3 and try Gentoo for a while (which worked nice but I'm not a big fan of GPL :-). Thank you a lot! Here's my specs: Are you sure the system is totally frozen? The console maybe locked up, but can you ping the machine from another or even ssh in and kill X? I did have a problem with X locking up on FreeBSD 5.2.1 and I fixed it by disabling acpi at boot, there's the startup message and I think adding acpi_load="NO" in /boot/loader.conf will make it permanent. > > Toshiba Satellite 1805-S203 (yes, I know it's not on the compatible > list) > 800MHz Pentium II (I believe... it's been a while since I've had to > quote specs) > 128M RAM > 15G HD > FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE (Build date: 16 October 2004) > Xorg (X11, Release 6.7) > > Any thoughts or help of any kind would be greatly appreciated. > Thanks, > Jon Bomgardner > > > > ============================================================================== > This communication, together with any attachments hereto or links contained herein, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain information that is confidential or legally protected.
