I don't get it! :-( I have 3 machines that play a role in this: * freebeast -- an SMP "build machine". It has a private mirror of the FreeBSD CVS repo, updated daily, and tracks RELENG_4 on a daily basis. * bunrab -- the machine I'm using to write this message. * janus -- another machine. The latter 2 machines are (for me) "production" machines; freebeast is not. The production machines do not build their own kernels (or much of anything else); those are built on freebeast. This morning, as I have for hundreds of previous occasions (every day for almost 3 years now), I updated /usr/src on freebeast, did the usual steps to build & install a snapshot of RELENG_4 as of the time of the CVS repo update, then rebooted. All was well. Then (as I have for 74 previous occasions), I built new kernels for each of bunrab & janus; no problems. Then for each of bunrab & janus, I logged in and issued sudo script /tmp/u Within "script," then, I issued a command alias that expanded to: mount -u -w /usr && mount -o ro {freebeast:,}/usr/src && \ mount -o ro freebeast:/common/S1/obj /usr/obj && \ cd /usr/src && whoami && mount && uname -a && date && \ make installkernel && date && \ rm -fr /usr/include.old && date && \ mv /usr/include{,.old} && date && \ mergemaster -p -u 0022 && date && \ make installworld && date && \ mergemaster -u 0022 -i && date && df -k as I have for the vast bulk of the previous 74 times. Here's how that happened, and why it used to work: My /usr/src is a CVS working directory; it's repo is my local private mirror. I also keep my kernel configs in CVS, but I don't pollute the FreeBSD repo for that; instead, I create symlinks in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf pointing to kernel config files that live in /usr/local/src/kernels -- more specifically, they pointe dto /usr/local/src/kernels/stable/{BUNRAB,JANUS,FREEBEAST,LAPTOP_30W...}. Accordingly, I had a dummy (empty) file with the path /usr/local/src/kernels/stable/JANUS on janus -- janus, after all, is not the machine where the kernel gets built, so the contents of the file are not especially relevant at install time -- just (as Marcel pointed out) existence. But now that RELENG_5 is moving toward -STABLE, I thought I should clarify the names a bit, so on the machines where I build kernels, I changed "stable/" to "FreeBSD-4/" and "current/" to "FreeBSD-5/" under /usr/local/src/kernels. And I changed the symlinks under /usr/src/sys/i386/conf to match. Now, bunrab runs an automounter, and bunrab:/usr/local/src points to the automounter mount point for freebeast. Thus, when there was a reference to /usr/local/src/kernels/FreeBSD-4/BUNRAB, it pointed to the real config file. However, janus does not run an automounter (by intent). Rather, back in December 2001, I had created that emtpy /usr/local/src/kernels/stabe/JANUS file so the "make installkernel" would work, but naturally, I had forgotten about it by now. :-{ And we now see: janus(4.10-S)[1] uname -a FreeBSD janus.catwhisker.org 4.10-STABLE FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE #74: Sun Aug 22 06:02:38 PDT 2004 root@freebeast.catwhisker.org:/common/S1/obj/usr/src/sys/JANUS i386 janus(4.10-S)[2] Marcel, I owe you a beverage of choice. :-) [And some folks claim that open source software doesn't have enough support! As I've been very pleased = with this OS, I'd like to use it with one of our new server, a dell = poweredge 750, P4 3,2 - 1Go ram - 2 sata drives on a raid 1 array. =20 So I installed Freebsd 4.10 on it, and everything went well during the = install. But I started a few tests (this machine is supposed to be a web = server), and I've been very disappointed by the I/0 performances. In = fact, the same query on the same database takes 2,56s on my old P4 = (which supports about 300 persons on a vbulletin forum at the same = time), and 4,80s on the new dell. Of course, the mysql configuration is = the same, and I've launched the query a few time to avoid differences = due to mysql cache. Moreover, the new server has been partitioned following the FreeBSD = standards, and softupdate is on whereas the old server doesn't have it. =20 My guess is that it's related to raid and/or sata support on FreeBSD = 4.10 but I was not able to find much about it on google. The only thing = interesting, was on the aac man page, which recommends to add a var to = loader.conf for maximum performances (what I've done but it didn't make = a difference). =20 I didn't make any tuning of things like that. The only thing that's I've = done is to build a new kernel with CPU_ENABLE_SSE and without I386_CPU, = I486_CPU, I586_CPU. =20 Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Best regards, Julien Lavigne du Cadet.=20 From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Aug 22 21:52:21 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A60516A4CE; Sun, 22 Aug 2004 21:52:21 +0000 (GMT) Received: from sirius.firepipe.net (sirius.firepipe.net [69.13.116.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 638DB43D1F; Sun, 22 Aug 2004 21:52:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from will@csociety.org) Received: by sirius.firepipe.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 26E4218076; Sun, 22 Aug 2004 16:52:21 -0500 (EST) Date: Sun, 22 Aug 2004 16:52:21 -0500 From: Will Andrews To: current@freebsd.org, stable@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20040822215221.GO90227@sirius.firepipe.net> Mail-Followup-To: current@freebsd.org, stable@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="Re2uCLPLNzqOLVJA" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i Subject: 5.3 daily snapshots available X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 22 Aug 2004 21:52:21 -0000 --Re2uCLPLNzqOLVJA Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hello, Several days ago I noticed that snapshots.se.freebsd.org was no longer producing 5.x snapshots. The first BETA for 5.3 was released today. We don't expect people to switch from 4.X to 5.X overnight, it will most likely take people time to make the transition. Especially large sites. Because of that we will continue to support 4.X for a while. Development (mostly just bugfixes) will continue until 4.11 is released, at which point development of 4.X will stop and it becomes an Errata Branch (only *really* major bug fixes along with security fixes will be applied). So, there will be an overlap of a few months where we have three active development branches. At this point 6.X is current, 5.X is "in transition" between being current and stable, and 4.X is still considered stable. After the 5.3 release it is expected 5.X will become stable. At that point I'm not sure what to call 4.X since development won't have stopped completely but it will still 'be there' for people who need time to make the jump to 5.X as the new stable. -- Ken Smith - From there to here, from here to | kensmith@cse.buffalo.edu there, funny things are everywhere. | - Theodore Geisel | From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 23 07:03:48 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 008D316A4D0 for ; Mon, 23 Aug 2004 07:03:48 +0000 (GMT) Received: from tigra.ip.net.ua (tigra.ip.net.ua [82.193.96.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 189A843D45 for ; Mon, 23 Aug 2004 07:03:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ru@ip.net.ua) Received: from heffalump.ip.net.ua (heffalump.ip.net.ua [82.193.96.213]) by tigra.ip.net.ua (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i7N73fWE011649 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Mon, 23 Aug 2004 10:03:42 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from ru@ip.net.ua) Received: (from ru@localhost) by heffalump.ip.net.ua (8.13.1/8.13.1) id i7N73iMb059616; Mon, 23 Aug 2004 10:03:44 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from ru) Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 10:03:43 +0300 From: Ruslan Ermilov To: Ken Smith Message-ID: <20040823070343.GG59140@ip.net.ua> References: <6E7EB9E8-F4BD-11D8-94CF-003065781ED0@runbox.com> <20040823045620.GG15251@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="uJWb33pM2TcUAXIl" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040823045620.GG15251@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: What is Stable X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 07:03:48 -0000 --uJWb33pM2TcUAXIl Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Mon, Aug 23, 2004 at 12:56:20AM -0400, Ken Smith wrote: > On Sun, Aug 22, 2004 at 11:32:24PM -0500, AL Grant wrote: > > I am confused. There are some minor fixes being commited to HEAD, but they won't be in RELENG_5 because of code freeze. Will these fixes be incorporated to RELENG_5 after 5.3-RELEASE is out? 5.3R schedule says about October. Isn't it increasing a risk of `fixed-in-current-long-time-ago-but- -forgotten-MFC' hell? ;) Wasn't it better to branch both RELENG_5 (open) and RELENG_5_3 (frozen) and allow developers to put changes in RELENG_5 after playing in HEAD as usual, without the need of waiting to October? regards, -- Pawe³ Ma³achowski From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 23 11:22:28 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5A38816A4CE for ; Mon, 23 Aug 2004 11:22:28 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail015.syd.optusnet.com.au (mail015.syd.optusnet.com.au [211.29.132.161]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6FF9243D2F for ; Mon, 23 Aug 2004 11:22:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from peterjeremy@optushome.com.au) Received: from server.vk2pj.dyndns.org (c211-30-75-229.belrs2.nsw.optusnet.com.au [211.30.75.229]) i7NBMIL16311; Mon, 23 Aug 2004 21:22:19 +1000 Received: from server.vk2pj.dyndns.org (localhost.vk2pj.dyndns.org [127.0.0.1])i7NBMIEW080899; Mon, 23 Aug 2004 21:22:18 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from peter@server.vk2pj.dyndns.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by server.vk2pj.dyndns.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i7NBMI44080898; Mon, 23 Aug 2004 21:22:18 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from peter) Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 21:22:18 +1000 From: Peter Jeremy To: Pawel Malachowski Message-ID: <20040823112218.GA80820@server.vk2pj.dyndns.org> References: <6E7EB9E8-F4BD-11D8-94CF-003065781ED0@runbox.com> <20040823045620.GG15251@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> <20040823105400.GA42452@shellma.zin.lublin.pl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040823105400.GA42452@shellma.zin.lublin.pl> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: What is Stable X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 11:22:28 -0000 On Mon, Aug 23, 2004 at 12:54:00PM +0200, Pawel Malachowski wrote: >5.x is actually frozen, I mean, there is no development branch for 5.x. >There are some minor fixes being commited to HEAD, but they won't be in >RELENG_5 because of code freeze. It's normal to freeze the RELENG_n branch whilst RELENG_n_m is being prepared. This makes it much easier to move the RELENG_n_m tags if necessary. Note that there hasn't been any excuse for forgetting MFC's for several years now: The "MFC after" tags in commit messages automatically generate reminder e-mails to the committer. >Wasn't it better to branch both RELENG_5 (open) and RELENG_5_3 (frozen) >and allow developers to put changes in RELENG_5 after playing in HEAD >as usual, without the need of waiting to October? Important fixes can still be MFC'd as long as re@ agrees. This sort of issue seems to arise just before every release - code freezes are always flagged well in advance, giving people plenty of time to commit general changes. For the past week I've been intermittently updating a FreeBSD-4.9 to 4.10p2. buildworld and kernel did OK and I'm now dealing with ports. After updating the system (and I do not remember if this also had to do with updating a port also), messages of the type: /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libz.so.1" not found started to appear. I noticed that this file is now missing and there is a libz.so.2 in /usr/lib/ Trying to start apache13 showed this same message. I reinstalled apache from ports and the problem is now gone. The same is happening now with mysql. Intriguingly mysqld (server) is running fine but I cannot use the mysql(1) client. I read about /etc/libmap.conf and added lines of the type libz.so.1 libz.so.2 That seemed to make mysql stop searching for libz.so.1 but now it fails on libcrypto.so.1, and after adding libcrypto.so.2 to libmap.conf now it's libnsl.so.1. My question is then: is this the right way to do this? (i.e. using libmap.conf) I already reinstalled both client and server and the problem is still there. A second question: in libmap.conf the only way to make mysql find the corresponding shared libs is to put the entries as 'global'. Constraining them to [mysql] or [/usr/local/bin/mysql] does not work. How should I constrain this so that the mappings are not global and mysql gets working? Or perhaps it is OK to use these entries globally? libz.so.1 libz.so.2 libcrypto.so.1 libcrypto.so.2 libnsl.so.1 libnsl.so.2 Thanks in advance for any suggestion, Fernan -- Fernan Aguero - fernan at iib.unsam.edu.ar Phone: +54 11 4580-7255/7 ext 310, Fax: +54 11 4752-9639 Check http://genoma.unsam.edu.ar/~fernan for more info. The panic happens on: 1. directory creation 2. when disk is empty 3. when avg_dir_size avg_file_size are set to values, so avg_dir_size * avg_file_size is negative in integer. example: avg_dir_size = 8000, avf_file_size = 375000. (curdirsize == 0 and dirsize < 0, so dirsize = 0) I'm sure it's very old bug. I know that maybe those params are wrong. And maybe newfs or tunefs should check them. But I'm sure that there should be some check in the code above to eliminate ANY possibility of panic. Panic is VERY undesirable situation. And I'm in doubt why those people who wrote ffs like panics so devotedly: # grep -c "panic" ffs_alloc.c ffs_softdep.c ffs_alloc.c:37 ffs_softdep.c:108 I think such things are not acceptable in production environment. Taking a stab in the dark here, I'd suspect that this is a safety mechanism -- if something goes awry in the filesystem code, the implications could have something of a domino effect and wind up leaving you with a hosed filesystem. Rather than take that chance, the system panics, which attempts to minimising the impact the code could have on your filesystem(s) by otherwise continuing on. Someone correct me if I'm off-base here... Why > those functions cannot just return a failure state and leave system > working? Actually it's checks like this and calls to panic that make the system acceptable in a production environment. A couple of examples: - Suppose the code is checking a reference counter, and that counter has become zero for a file object that the kernel believes is still in use. This should never happen, it is an indication that somewhere else there was a programming bug. Furthermore, that other piece of the system where the bug lies may have started to use pieces of that file object for *other* purposes. If you just continue on pretending nothing happened you wind up with filesystem corruption, what's on the disk is not necessarily correct. Better to have the machine crash and reboot than write bad data to the disk. - Suppose you have a disk drive that's dying and now what you write to it isn't necessarily what you read back because it's dying. Again, much better to panic the machine than to continue on pretending nothing is wrong. You would not likely have the ffs code panic the machine for data inside of files for this sort of situation but if the machine reads data in from the data structures on the disk that keep track of what files are inside of which directories, who owns those files, what the permissions are, what disk blocks the files are actually sitting on (this is generally known as "metadata") then the ffs code will typically panic the machine. - Suppose you as a sys-admin make a mistake, and somehow manage to set up two disk partitions that partially overlap (don't laugh, I've seen it happen...). Here you again wind up in a situation where the filesystem data structures on the disk can become corrupted. Typically at some point the ffs code will recognize that the metadata is incorrect and again a panic is better than trying to carry on pretending nothing is wrong. None of these things should happen. But they *can* happen and not all of them are "system bugs" - the second example is out of anyone's control and the third example is "pilot error". The consequences of not panic-ing in these situations is having corrupted data on the disks. -- Ken Smith - From there to here, from here to | kensmith@cse.buffalo.edu there, funny things are everywhere. | - Theodore Geisel | From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 27 20:42:19 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5939116A4CE for ; Fri, 27 Aug 2004 20:42:19 +0000 (GMT) Received: from electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU [128.205.32.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D0BA143D1D for ; Fri, 27 Aug 2004 20:42:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kensmith@cse.Buffalo.EDU) Received: from electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (kensmith@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i7RKgHTH001401; Fri, 27 Aug 2004 16:42:18 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from kensmith@localhost) by electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (8.12.10/8.12.9/Submit) id i7RKgHto001400; Fri, 27 Aug 2004 16:42:17 -0400 (EDT) Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2004 16:42:17 -0400 From: Ken Smith To: Colin Percival Message-ID: <20040827204217.GC29928@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> References: <1076237332.20040827215245@kaluga.ru> <20040827193605.GC28442@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> <6.1.0.6.1.20040827124846.03ac02d0@popserver.sfu.ca> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <6.1.0.6.1.20040827124846.03ac02d0@popserver.sfu.ca> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: Pavel Merdine cc: Ken Smith cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ffs_alloc panic patch X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2004 20:42:19 -0000 On Fri, Aug 27, 2004 at 12:55:39PM -0700, Colin Percival wrote: > At 12:36 27/08/2004, Ken Smith wrote: > > ... It's too hard to decide whether the filesystem in question can be lived without. Certainly / can't be lived without. The contents of /var can't be lived without, it may or may not be on a separate filesystem. Suppose I chose to have /tmp on a separate filesystem and we actually did manage to successfully unmount it (hee hee hee :-), typically the directory permissions of the /tmp directory as represented in the root filesystem itself are wrong (setting it to be rwxrwxrwt was done after it had been mounted and it's the permissions from the mounted filesystem that are normally seen). Can we live without /usr? Did we set up cron jobs that will do really really really nasty things if the filesystem doesn't look the way it should because something got unmounted we weren't expecting? Suppose we're running a mirror site with a large repository in /ftp, it fails, but the machine remains up and running - downstream mirror sites connect, see nothing, and dutifully remove everything on their site. That I was trying to say. For example, the Windows does not show the blue screen in such situations. In my practice I saw many times the situation of panic() when file system was not fsck'd. Actually it may even lead to security holes. E.g. a user may change an fs somehow to make it loop in panic forever... For example, we are going to write a file. This fails at the bottom of the code. Why can we just report that we failed to write it? For example if we didn't change any internal structures? I'm sure we can still read from that disk. (I hope there are no panics in read code?)
