While I think it is a good thing to have something like this on the front page, it does cludder the "right box" even more. How about removing the explicit Announcement link (it's still linked =66rom the title) and only showing 5 items in project news and project press ? (it's not like there are a lot of new additions to those to all the time anyway). I think this helps a bit until we decide on some "grand plan" for the website in general. I made a patch to do this (attached) and a build with it can be seen on http://simon.nitro.dk/tmp/freebsdweb/ . --=20 Simon L. But for 5.2.1R, ${u.rel.early} instead of ${u.rel.announce} is linked from the title line, so that part in your patch should be fixed. Other than that, I agree with this idea. I just had a quick look at the source code for man.cgi. It parses the output from man(1) and does so using perl at it's best/worst with a lot of regular expressions, so fixing this isn't simple. I just cc'ed Wolfram Schneider who is the original author of man.cgi and unless he has a quick fix I wouldn't count on this problem being fixed any time soon - it's just too much black perl magic :-). --=20 Simon L. My proposal is to take the entire section 'User Groups' and create a new page usergroups.html that would be a verbatim copy of the existing text, with the markup changes to 1) add an index to each of the sections, 2) add a name to each of the sections for the links in that index, 3) change the header glue. (My intention would be to ask for a repocopy, then edit out the redundant text in both files). I have included two diff files. The second one, diff.out.usergroups, applies correctly to support.sgml. As for the first one: unfortunately diff gets confused trying to diff support.sgml with the new usergroups.sgml but I have hacked up its output to show what I want to do. Note: this diff will _not_ apply cleanly to a copy of that file. While the diffs may look large, they actually do not amount to much. To see what this change will look like, see the following URL: http://lonesome.com/FreeBSD_www/en/support.html. diff.short: 2,3c2,3 < < --- > > 10,286c10,12 < [more diffs elided] 322,330d22 [elided] < <=20 <

I have one suggestion and one request related to the mailing list archives on www.freebsd.org 1. The mailing lists archives on www.freebsd.org have all the e-mail addresses accessible, in clear text in the HTML. Those addresses are routinely harvested by SPAMmers. Many e-mail archives switched to the mode when they remove the e-mail addresses from the headers and the body of all messages. I suggest that FreeBSD team follows that good example. A variation of that solution can be that addresses are available for a subscribed person loged in via mailman interface if that such necessity exists. (Note, that some archivesm, e.g. Neophasis, while don't remove the address completely, at least replaces the "@" symbol with a gif image. While this is not the best solution, it at least reduces the success of spammers' address harvesters.) 2. Personal request. Accidentally my very private address (particularly not used to post to any public forums) got to a message _privately_ sent to another mailing list subscriber. That person posted my e-mail to the mailing list without asking my permission, and did not remove any e-mail addresses. Upon being pointed out, that person appologized, but.. I would greatly appreciate if you can manually remove the address "igor@giganda.komkon.org" appearing in the body of the messages with the following Message-ID: <32866.192.168.100.1.1088557520.squirrel@192.168.100.1> <20040629174641.N47396@metafocus.net> <20040629191556.L47985@metafocus.net> all under the thread "Re: ttyv for local only?" 1. Run make install... it runs for a minute then spits out a python error. Install would not go so i figured out how to do it manually... which led me to more problems. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: I went into the build directory as root and tried running the firefox binary i had just compiled. it worked perfectly. i then decided i would just manually install the files in their proper directores. I created a symlink to the binary and changed back to my normal user. Firefox fails to start stating that it could not find an extension. I fixed this by changing to su and opening firefox. From inside the program i disabled the auto update feature and exited. When i changed back to normal user it finally started, stating something about not having access to an extension. There was still a problem though... when i started the program it said 'default user in use. make new one' so i did. i quit the program and restarted and it gave me the same error once again and didnt show the profile i had just made in my home dir. i quit and sure enough the profile was there but firefox couldnt see it. I decided to edit the initialization file in my /home/user/.firefox/profiles/ to te ll it to open the new profile i had created. Now it works perfect, but hopefully you can now make it simpler for the next person >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 30 22:40:09 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0C06816A4CE; Wed, 30 Jun 2004 22:40:09 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E309243D2D; Wed, 30 Jun 2004 22:40:08 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from linimon@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (linimon@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i5UMdxbl003558; Wed, 30 Jun 2004 22:39:59 GMT (envelope-from linimon@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from linimon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i5UMdxtL003554; Wed, 30 Jun 2004 22:39:59 GMT (envelope-from linimon) Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2004 22:39:59 GMT From: Mark Linimon Message-Id: <200406302239.i5UMdxtL003554@freefall.freebsd.org> To: linimon@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org, gnome@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: ports/68531: www/firefox 9.1 source install problem X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2004 22:40:09 -0000 Old Synopsis: firefox 9.1 source install problem New Synopsis: www/firefox 9.1 source install problem Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-www->gnome Responsible-Changed-By: linimon Responsible-Changed-When: Wed Jun 30 22:36:46 GMT 2004 Responsible-Changed-Why: This is a 'ports' problem, not a 'www' problem. I would like to propose breaking this up into several smaller sections. The questions are in random order, AFAICT :-), and my prototype does not yet attempt to deal with that problem. It is only there for a proof- of-concept glance: http://www.lonesome.com/FreeBSD_doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/index.html (Obviously, if people don't think much of this idea, there's no reason to do the work to prototype moving the text around ...) My intention would be to add the section tags first (the diff is only 61 lines) in the first commit, then to move the text around to fit the new sections in a second commit, to try to help out the translators.
