These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. I install basics and graphic environment. It works just fine now. During the installation process (from the CD) everything worked great. When I wanted to start graphic environment here came one big problem. I read the chapter related to KDM and XDM configuration many times. I know that's not obvious to gather all information from all over the world but if my request can make better the installation process I'll be honored. Before finding the final solution I made research on the web and news group. When I use startx after login in text mode as root or whatever login is everything is going great (I followed instruction from the doc of freeBSD). If I launch xdm or KDM from text mode without changing anything in a conf file , login and password widget show up. When I login with the user password the screen is blinking and then come back to login graphical screen. When I watched in the .xsession-error file it was telling me that I could not log to X server :0.0 display not allowed. I solved the problem just by adding in the file /etc/rc.conf the hostname variable. This problem occurs to many people on the net so my sugestion is not inocent. Well I was guessing: is that possible to add in the doccumentation concerning X configuration for the first and precisely in the XDM or KDM chapter an add on that say 'don't forget to configure your localhost variable in /etc/rc.conf' otherwise you won't be abble to log properly. I know my email sounds like stupid or borring to read but this can remove the lost of time for configuration pain to users or administrators or whatever. I hope my email would be taken seriouly because you know sometime it can make people changing their mind just for one bull sheet of configuration. Don't worry about me I am persistant and fan of freeBSD so this not my case but other persons can be. Thanx anyway to have read my email. Given that a lot of other things will probably break in nasty ways if a hostname is not set, do we really need to explicitly mark all these places? I intend to send you other mistake I might find unless you tell me to stop. In section 3.3.1 on this page: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/permissions.html The last paragraph says: "A comma separated list can be provided when more than one set of changes to a file must be made. For example the following command will remove the groups and ``world'' write permission on FILE, then it adds the execute permissions for everyone: % chmod go-w,a+x FILE " The command does not do what the text says. The text says "world" but the command is for "Other". I suggest you change either one or the other. Have fun with the mistake, wrestle it to the ground and make it submit. So the command does what is says it does imo. > I suggest you change either one or the other. > > > Have fun with the mistake, wrestle it to the ground and make it submit. > > Greets, > > Louis Tan > -- Kind regards, Remko Lodder ** remko@elvandar.org Reporter DSINET ** remko@DSINet.org Founder Tienervaders ** remko@tienervaders.org FreeBSD Documentation Project ** remko@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 23 23:10:08 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8399316A4CE for ; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 23:10:08 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 36B6B43D39 for ; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 23:10:08 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j3NNA8hR028784 for ; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 23:10:08 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j3NNA8Et028783; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 23:10:08 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sat, 23 Apr 2005 23:10:08 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200504232310.j3NNA8Et028783@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Brad Davis Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 89AF616A4D2 for ; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 23:07:32 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ender.liquidneon.com (ender.liquidneon.com [64.78.150.163]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3A90143D1D for ; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 23:07:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bdavis@house.so14k.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ender.liquidneon.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id D9C44A6C1E for ; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 17:07:31 -0600 (MDT) Received: from ender.liquidneon.com ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (ender.liquidneon.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 63715-04 for ; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 17:07:31 -0600 (MDT) Received: from mccaffrey.house.so14k.com (gw.house.so14k.com [216.87.87.128]) by ender.liquidneon.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7EC77A6C1C for ; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 17:07:31 -0600 (MDT) Received: by mccaffrey.house.so14k.com (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 3D438B86B; Sat, 23 Apr 2005 17:07:31 -0600 (MDT) Message-Id: <20050423230731.3D438B86B@mccaffrey.house.so14k.com> Date: Sat, 23 Apr 2005 17:07:31 -0600 (MDT) From: Brad Davis To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.113 Subject: docs/80294: Clean up wording and displaying a command to setup PPP X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Brad Davis List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 23 Apr 2005 23:10:08 -0000 >Number: 80294 >Category: docs >Synopsis: Clean up wording and displaying a command to setup PPP >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: update >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sat Apr 23 23:10:07 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Brad Davis >Release: FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE i386 >Organization: >Environment: System: FreeBSD mccaffrey.house.so14k.com 5.4-STABLE FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE #0: Wed Apr 20 22:22:19 MDT 2005 root@mccaffrey.house.so14k.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/SMP i386 >Description: Clean up wording and displaying a command to setup PPP. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: --- doc-ori/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ppp-and-slip/chapter.sgml Fri Apr 22 11:51:50 2005 +++ doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ppp-and-slip/chapter.sgml Sat Apr 23 17:04:26 2005 @@ -2158,8 +2158,9 @@ net.graph.nonstandard_pppoe=1 - or can be done for immediate effect with the command - sysctl net.graph.nonstandard_pppoe=1. + or can be done immediately with the command: + + &prompt.root; sysctl net.graph.nonstandard_pppoe=1 Unfortunately, because this is a system-wide setting, it is not possible to talk to a normal PPPoE client or server and a >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted:
