Is a web hoster prohibited from selling FreeBSD accounts with jdk14 installed? > > > > >_______________________________________________ > >freebsd-java@freebsd.org mailing list > >http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-java > >To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-java-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" > > > > > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-java@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-java > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-java-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" > -- -Achilleus From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 10 10:27:34 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 152E416A4CE for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2005 10:27:34 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mongers.org (miracle.mongers.org [193.162.142.71]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id D9DD343D2F for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2005 10:27:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from m@mongers.org) Received: (qmail 14707 invoked by uid 1021); 10 Jan 2005 10:27:30 -0000 Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2005 11:27:30 +0100 From: Morten Liebach To: java@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20050110102730.GA31285@mongers.org> References: <41DE4504.5040300@ebs.gr> <2569.216.220.59.169.1105114005.squirrel@216.220.59.169> <41E247F2.2070605@nefli.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <41E247F2.2070605@nefli.nl> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2i X-Accept-Language: dansk, english X-Organisation: Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of Death, Inc. I hope some day sun will wake up. Here at work we use FreeBSD 4.x servers running Java and tomcat, it is not a problem at all, it just works. We run 8 webservers and about the same number of backend servers like that. We only use Linux for our load balancers. Maybe there's specific things in your apps that won't work, I don't know, but my experience is that there's no reason not to use FreeBSD for running Java apps, unless you need bleeding edge stuff perhaps. One error about linuxprocfs occure : # cd /usr/ports/java/jdk14 # make all install clean ====================================================================== Warning: This JDK may be unstable. You are advised to use the native FreeBSD JDK, in ports/java/jdk14. This Java VM will attempt to obtain some system information by accessing files in linux's procfs. You must install the Linux emulation procfs filesystem for this to work correctly. The JVM will exhibit various problems otherwise. This can be accomplished by adding the following line to your /etc/fstab file: linprocfs /compat/linux/proc linprocfs rw 0 0 and then, as root, executing the commands: kldload linprocfs mount /compat/linux/proc ====================================================================== ===> Vulnerability check disabled, database not found ===> Extracting for linux-sun-jdk-1.4.2.06 >> No checksum recorded for j2sdk-1_4_2_06-linux-i586.bin. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/java/linux-sun-jdk14. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/java/jdk14. but before intallation i checked it : $ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on /dev/ad0s2a 989M 55M 855M 6% / devfs 1.0K 1.0K 0B 100% /dev /dev/ad0s2e 989M 46K 910M 0% /tmp /dev/ad0s2f 19G 2.6G 15G 15% /usr /dev/ad0s2d 989M 28M 882M 3% /var linprocfs 4.0K 4.0K 0B 100% /usr/compat/linux/proc $ kldstat Id Refs Address Size Name 1 7 0xc0400000 4e2d80 kernel 2 14 0xc08e3000 537f0 acpi.ko 3 1 0xc1c84000 6000 linprocfs.ko $ ll /usr/ports/distfiles/ total 105404 drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel - 1024 Jan 10 10:48 ./ drwxr-xr-x 66 root wheel - 1536 Jan 8 20:49 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 follet follet - 1068798 Jan 10 10:33 bsd-jdk14-patches-6.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 follet follet - 2513462 Jan 10 10:41 j2sdk-1_4_2-bin-scsl.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 follet follet - 49269919 Jan 10 10:47 j2sdk-1_4_2-src-scsl.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 follet follet - 36417364 Jan 9 18:18 j2sdk-1_4_2_06-linux-i586.bin What's wrong ? I think that also internal deployment requires passing of TCK and paying roalties to SUN. It is all in the license text. > > Is a web hoster prohibited from selling FreeBSD accounts > with jdk14 installed? > Same as internal use :( See attachments "C" and "D" in license. I'm not a lawyer, but I have spent several hours reading the license text. I don't know if the text was similar in previous version, the one I have been studying is from jdk 1.4.2. I hope I got it wrong, but it looks a little like if you are going to do anything else than just playing around you need to get into agreement with sun yourself (this means passing TCK, also maybe some royalties) or use binary release (which is older version, 1.3) or use linux-jdk. I think that I'm going to take the last option for production use. (until there is a binary 1.4 jdk for FreeBSD) Ari S. Generics as I understand them are a compile time feature, and the current shipped compilers can do the work. There is some magic trick you can employ to get it enabled. I don't know specifically how it is done, but someone in our shop slipped it into the compile phase in the summer of 2002 and we have been using it on one significant project ever since (on FreeBSD as well). (If you're interested I'll chase up how it was done. It's not a publishable technique, SUN again do not permit it to be published.) I'd say that doing so was a mixed bag; one problem I saw was that the code couldn't then be compiled in anyone else's shop. Also, once used extensively, they do result in hard to read code, the pollution aspect is not inconsiderable. iang -- News and views on what matters in finance+crypto: http://financialcryptography.com/ From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 10 12:41:33 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A386C16A4CE for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2005 12:41:33 +0000 (GMT) Received: from gollum.cambrium.nl (mx1.cambrium.nl [217.19.16.130]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 5662E43D5A for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2005 12:41:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from j.verschoor@nefli.nl) Received: (qmail 16279 invoked from network); 10 Jan 2005 12:41:31 -0000 Received: from 217-19-20-68.dsl.cambrium.nl (HELO ?192.168.1.142?) True, but if you're using a 5.0 compiler, it will use StringBuilder and other things 1.4 does not have, so although the bytecode is compatible, 1.4.2 does not have the right libraries / methods :( > > I don't know specifically how it is done, but someone > in our shop slipped it into the compile phase in the > summer of 2002 and we have been using it on one > significant project ever since (on FreeBSD as well). > (If you're interested I'll chase up how it was done. > It's not a publishable technique, SUN again do not > permit it to be published.) But, it doesn't speak kindly of Java; It should be quite routine to use such forward features in non-production code, and even to trial it in limited production, but the way Java is squeezed by so many coralling restrictions, one has to stay on the straight and narrow. I have no idea how big development environments manage to do this with their longer cycles. iang -- News and views on what matters in finance+crypto: http://financialcryptography.com/ From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 10 14:17:19 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5FB9916A4CE for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2005 14:17:19 +0000 (GMT) Received: from gollum.cambrium.nl (mx1.cambrium.nl [217.19.16.130]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 10C9543D1F for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2005 14:17:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from j.verschoor@nefli.nl) Received: (qmail 28904 invoked from network); 10 Jan 2005 14:17:17 -0000 Received: from 217-19-20-68.dsl.cambrium.nl (HELO ?192.168.1.142?) They need to be added to the classpath for each phase. Read the bat files for invocation magic. The product is some sort of experimentat prototype, and lacks any semblance of support, and may not be the full Generics that turns up in 1.5. It's probably not much use unless you are planning to intercept 1.5 and go production under that environment. Or you just want to play around and see if Generics does any good. I encountered the following problem with bsd.java.mk: When I put JAVA_BUILD=yes in the Makefile, I have JAVAC undefined. In order to set JAVAC, I need to put JAVA_BUILD=jdk. I would expect JAVA_BUILD=yes to set JAVAC . If JAVA_BUILD=jdk is the intended behavior, this must be explained in the description part of bsd.java.mk. From the current description it looks like JAVA_BUILD can be set to yes|no. /Yuri From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 11 14:36:14 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 444C716A4CE for ; Tue, 11 Jan 2005 14:36:14 +0000 (GMT) Received: from arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr (arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr [139.124.41.108]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 931FD43D53 for ; Tue, 11 Jan 2005 14:36:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr) Received: from arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr (localhost.esil.univ-mrs.fr [127.0.0.1])j0BEaAJa068279; Tue, 11 Jan 2005 15:36:10 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr) Received: (from rv@localhost) by arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j0BEa92U068278; Tue, 11 Jan 2005 15:36:10 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr) X-Authentication-Warning: arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr: rv set sender to herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr using -f Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 15:36:09 +0100 From: Herve Quiroz To: Yuri Khotyaintsev Message-ID: <20050111143609.GA68083@arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr> Mail-Followup-To: Yuri Khotyaintsev , freebsd-java@freebsd.org References: <200501111458.19485.yuri@irfu.se> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <200501111458.19485.yuri@irfu.se> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: bsd.java.mk question X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 14:36:14 -0000 On Tue, Jan 11, 2005 at 02:58:17PM +0100, Yuri Khotyaintsev wrote: > Hej! > > I encountered the following problem with bsd.java.mk: > > When I put JAVA_BUILD=yes in the Makefile, I have JAVAC undefined. > In order to set JAVAC, I need to put JAVA_BUILD=jdk. > > I would expect JAVA_BUILD=yes to set JAVAC . That's my fault, I believe. JDK/JRE differenciation is a planned feature. I just didn't had the time to implement it yet. The original proposal mention this behaviour [1] but then I wrote some erroneous documentation. I will change the documentation in bsd.java.mk header and in the Porter's handbook as well to reflect this. BTW I think I have found a simple way to implement JDK/JRE differenciation, so I'll give it a try in the near future... Thanks for reporting that. I did not know much about this file other than it had an error trace of why my browser did not work with Java 1.4.2. (Tuple3d class not found) I searched on the internet for this file and found, (your note)... I am running on windows so I do not have a choice of chmod. I am getting ready to upgrade to 1.5 (to see if this fixes the problem). Did you find a better solution other than chmod? Cheers, Kristin I just installed java3d and have been puttering around with it for the afternoon (possible job opportunity using this stuff). I found that I was immediately able to use the install on the included demos (ie, cd /usr/local/share/java/java3d/demo/HelloUniverse && java HelloUniverse), but nothing would run in a browser. Oddly enough something like appletviewer HelloUniverse_plugin.html worked just fine but the browser just refused to give me anything but a gray window with a small red x in the upper left corner. Omitting the agonizing details of how I discovered this (and I still don't know WHY this is so), the issue seems to revolve around the existence of the file ~/.java/deployment/log/plugin142.trace !! In short, if it exists when the browser starts no applets can be run properly in that browser (this only applies to java3d stuff). My work-around was to chmod 555 ~/.java/deployment/log so that the file couldn't be created. I don't have a clue why this is happening but I'm guessing I'm not the only one -- or has no one else tried the plugin functionality? I'm running 5.2.1-RELEASE jdk-1.4.2p6_4, linux-sun-jdk-1.4.2.04, java3d-1.3.1_1, javavmwrapper-1.5, and exactly the /etc/libmap.conf contents suggested by linuxpluginwrapper-20040310_1 when installed earlier. Please let me know if anyone would like any more details about my system. First off, trying to download the J2EE SDK, they now force you to download the JDK + Sun App server bundle? (Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8.1 2005Q1 Release Candidate) Resolving myself to the pain I knew was ahead, I grab the Linux version (sjsas_pe-8_1_2005Q1-linux.bin), which is now a binary instead of a zip. Trying to run this binary results in the lovely FreeBSD not supported message. Checking available disk space... Checking Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment... Extracting Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment files... Extracting installation files... Launching Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment... Platform not supported for media spanning: com.sun.wizards.media.FreebsdMediaSupport Deleting temporary files... Does anyone know how to get this bundle of joy working, or how to aquire just the SDK? I also tried to download the JMS SDK, which of course brought me to the download page for the Sun Java System Message Queue Platform Edition. It seems Suns new vision is to bundle the SDK with the associated Sun product, forcing you to infect your machine. Note there is no plugin or javaws support in this patchset. Alexey has tested 5.3 quite well (i386 and amd64). My initial tests on 4.10 showed some problems with graphical applications crashing. The plan is to follow this up with patchset 1 next week, so all problem reports are appreciated. Also, a big thanks to Alexey for all his work getting this going. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 15 01:03:53 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3515616A4CE for ; Sat, 15 Jan 2005 01:03:53 +0000 (GMT) Received: from lakermmtao06.cox.net (lakermmtao06.cox.net [68.230.240.33]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A26C343D45 for ; Sat, 15 Jan 2005 01:03:52 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from conrads@cox.net) Received: from dolphin.local.net ([68.11.71.76]) by lakermmtao06.cox.net (InterMail vM.6.01.04.00 201-2131-117-20041022) with ESMTP id <20050115010350.SYYW7687.lakermmtao06.cox.net@dolphin.local.net>; Fri, 14 Jan 2005 20:03:50 -0500 Received: from dolphin.local.net (localhost.local.net [127.0.0.1]) by dolphin.local.net (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j0F0nhUC014113; Fri, 14 Jan 2005 18:49:43 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from conrads@cox.net) Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2005 18:49:38 -0600 From: "Conrad J. Eclipse and all it's dependancies built just fine (I used portinstall eclipse, and went with all the defaults). Mozilla 1.7 compiled and installed, all the linux stuff compiled and installed (though I would like to stay away from the linux dependancies if possible). Everything is fine, up to this point: gather.sources: [mkdir] Created dir: /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/plugins/org.eclipse.pde.source/src/org.eclipse.pde.ui_3.0.1 [copy] Copying 1 file to /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/plugins/org.eclipse.pde.source/src/org.eclipse.pde.ui_3.0.1 [copy] Copying 1 file to /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/plugins/org.eclipse.pde.source/src/org.eclipse.pde.ui_3.0.1 [copy] Copying 5 files to /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/plugins/org.eclipse.pde.source/src/org.eclipse.pde.ui_3.0.1 update.feature: all.children: all.plugins: properties: init: build.jars: update.feature: all.children: install: main: [mkdir] Created dir: /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/result [mkdir] Created dir: /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/tmp init: gather.bin.parts: init: buildDocZip: all: convertSchemaToHtml: examplesDocCopy: getJavadocPath: generateJavadoc: [mkdir] Created dir: /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/plugins/org.eclipse.platform.doc.isv/reference/api [unzip] Expanding: /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/plugins/org.eclipse.osgi/osgi/osgiJavaDoc.zip into /usr/ports/java/eclipse/work/plugins/org.eclipse.platform.doc.isv/reference/osgi Killed gmake: *** [build-install] Error 137 *** Error code 2 Stop in /usr/ports/java/eclipse. the [unzip] target ran for a while and then generated this error. The strange thing is that even after the process stopped my system was still sluggish - as if it was still working. So I ran top and saw that "javadoc" was still running. It wasn't hogging any recources, but it was still running. I tried killing it from top, but nothing happened. Then I tried killing it from the terminal with -TERM. That didn't work so I used -INT, which stopped "javadoc" from running. My question is this: what is gmake: Error 137, and what can I do to fix this? I am new, so if any more info is needed, please let me know. Thanks for your help.
