It does not matter if I use 4.x or 5.x, CD or floppies. There is no error log since it just shuts off after I choose to load a kernel. I have tried loading with ACPI off, and it does not help. I believe I tried all the kernel options available from the menu on 5.x. The computer is a HP Pavilion zv5445us, with 512MB RAM, P4-3Ghz, 100GB HD, 15.4" Hi-Def Screen, 54G 802.11b WLAN. I purchased it from Best Buy. Under Windows, it appears Hyper-Threading is turned on, and I have not found a way to turn it off inside the CMOS. The machine runs Windows XP Pro fine, but I am trying to switch to FreeBSD on all my boxen. I was really surprised to find this one abruptly shutdown when trying to do the install. It turns off before the install really starts, so I do not have much information to solve this problem. The HD is never touched. Any suggestions? -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I've heard rumors that the issue extends past the AMD64 Compaqs and HPs. I think there's an ISO out there with most of them merged. Assuming this relates to P4s, as well as the AMD64s, once again, I think we should consider this a -mobile problem, not an -amd64 one. --- Harrison Grundy From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 14 21:04:55 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2D1D816A4CE for ; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 21:04:55 +0000 (GMT) Received: from broad.100mwh.com (broad.100mwh.com [205.214.86.31]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EF94343D41 for ; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 21:04:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from rseals@vdsi.net) Received: from aqua.magellanhealth.com ([204.193.75.20] helo=10.200.10.14) by broad.100mwh.com with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1D0nOl-00037b-OV for freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 15:04:29 -0600 From: Ray Seals To: "freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG" Content-Type: text/plain Organization: Virtual Data Systems, Inc. I am currently looking for a laptop and took a FreeSBIE 1.1 CD with me to several places (Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, and others...) and every Compaq or HP machine (not just AMD64, but every one!) shutdown when I tried to boot. It didn't matter which selection I made from the boot prompt, they all caused a shutdown. I didn't have a version with the mentioned patches, but it would definitely open up my choices in laptops if they fix this problem. I would think this would be a higher priority to fix than it is. I was very surprised when I started looking around for information and saw that this has been a problem for quite some time. Unfortunately I don't have the experience to fix this myself. Please note I am NOT knocking FreeBSD in any way. I run 5 on my current laptop (it is fantastic) and 4.stable on several desktop and servers (also fantastic... the OS, not my ability to run it). I really appreciate all of the hard work that everyone does for the OS. I just thought with the popularity of HP/Compaq machines that this would be fixed quicker than it has. I'll have to try the FreeSBIE CD at work and see if this problem exists on desktop HPs. -mark From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 15 02:19:37 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0103F16A4CE for ; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 02:19:37 +0000 (GMT) Received: from dmz2.onewest.net (isp1.blissnet.com [199.104.81.6]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AE3D343D3F for ; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 02:19:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from rfreidel@onewest.net) Received: from du83.192.onewest.net ([65.19.192.83] helo=localhost) by dmz2.onewest.net with smtp (Exim 3.35 #1 (Debian)) id 1D0sJK-0006bY-00 for ; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 19:19:34 -0700 Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2005 19:19:42 -0700 From: Ron Freidel To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20050214191942.444ca5c2.rfreidel@onewest.net> In-Reply-To: <42114588.3090403@acm.org> References: <4210142F.8000202@optonline.net> <2fd864e050214065120da216e@mail.gmail.com> <42114588.3090403@acm.org> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 1.0.0-gtk2-20041224 (GTK+ 2.4.14; i386-portbld-freebsd5.3) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: Choosing to install turns off laptop. I could get it running at least but it did not make real sense to keep it as the power management was to limited. I kept this machine as my only Windows machine to do support Windows programs. It is very often the case that notebook vendors do not give the support needed to adopt the drivers to make FreeBSD a success on those machines. I have tried loading with ACPI off, and it does not > help. I believe I tried all the kernel options available from > the menu > on 5.x. > After reading that 4.X is killing it, my guess is that what's going on is that one of the device drivers compiled into the kernel that is for a piece of hardware that is NOT on your laptop is issuing a probe that is hitting a port that HP decided to use for something. If you really wanted to, and you have a system already running 5.X, it is possible to compile a custom kernel that has all device drivers stripped out of it, then put this kernel onto the first install floppy and do a floppy install of FreeBSD. Then make sure a copy of that kernel exists on the system when you reboot. This is a long and complicated procedure, unfortunately, and since your laptop is brand new, probably isn't worth it since you can simply return the laptop to the store and get a different one. (since it's under the 30 day return policy) Before you do that though it would be very kind if you could please submit a PR for this so we can get it documented. I also still think that the ACPI could possibly be at fault. I know that there's an option to disable ACPI probes, but I had a similar problem with a different system back in the early 4.X series of FreeBSD. I forget the version of FreeBSD that they introduced ACPI support, but I clearly recall the prior version of FreeBSD booting and running on a desktop, then the next 4.x version which had ACPI, not booting on this system, despite turning off the ACPI probe. As I recall a BIOS update from the manufacturer fixed the problem. (ACPI still didn't work but at least the diskettes booted) Of course, since power management on a laptop is pretty required, an exercise in getting a stripped kernel running on that Pavilion is purely academic. > The computer is a HP Pavilion zv5445us, with 512MB RAM, P4-3Ghz, 100GB > HD, 15.4" Hi-Def Screen, 54G 802.11b WLAN. I purchased it > from Best Buy. > Best Buy is fairly good at taking exchanges within 30 days. Their written policy kind of threatens a restocking charge of 15% on opened notebook computers - but the exception is if the item is defective. In your case you have a grey area, but if you were to take it back and tell them that the system is periodically shutting itself down and you want to exchange it for a different model because you don't have any confidence in the zv5445us, they wouldn't be able to verify this and you could probably talk your way out of the restock charge, PARTICULARLY if you bought the item on a credit card - since credit card issuers generally take a dim view of restock fees on consumer items. I have had a family member do this exact thing with a laptop he bought from there a few years ago. (it wasn't a FreeBSD thing, the laptop was just not very well made and he ended up buying a more expensive laptop from them) This is also particularly if you bring back ALL OF the original packing materials AND THE SOFTWARE particularly if it's unopened, and repack the laptop in it's box. Remember that Best Buy has to send the thing back to HP and if it breaks in transit and it wasn't in the factory cardboard, HP is going to charge Best Buy for the loss. > abruptly shutdown when trying to do the install. It turns off before > the install really starts, so I do not have much information to solve > this problem. The HD is never touched. > > I'm blue. > Don't be. The project doesen't intend for end users to solve these sorts of problems, frankly. Return the laptop and get a different model which will probably work fine and consider it a learning experience. There's enough people within the Project that have contacts within HP that if a decently-written PR was filed, it could be quitely handled within HP. I must warn you though that unless a PR is filed, nobody is going to bother with a complaint on a mailing list. You can file a PR from any FreeBSD system you have. See the handbook for details. A PR also documents the problem so that other potential purchasers will know to avoid the problem model. Search for FreeBSD PXE install on Google. But I agree that it might be a better idea to get another laptop. I didn't have much problems with the FSC E8010, but it's not the cheapest and the power-management left something to be desired, I will retry it, though in the next weeks or months. Also, as the support for vmware4 on FreeBSD matures, it might also kill the only other reason for Linux on that thing ;-) If you want to keep a HP, try a NX 7010 and see if that works better. The "Pavillion"-series is really the low-end of the spectrum. cheers, Rainer -- =================================================== ~ Rainer Duffner - rainer@ultra-secure.de ~ ~ Freising - Munich - Germany ~ ~ Unix - Linux - BSD - OpenSource - Security ~ ~ http://www.ultra-secure.de/~rainer/pubkey.pgp ~ =================================================== From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 15 12:20:54 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3472916A4CE for ; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 12:20:54 +0000 (GMT) Received: from postfix4-2.free.fr (postfix4-2.free.fr [213.228.0.176]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B0E3843D45 for ; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 12:20:53 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tataz@tataz.chchile.org) Received: from tatooine.tataz.chchile.org (vol75-8-82-233-239-98.fbx.proxad.net [82.233.239.98]) by postfix4-2.free.fr (Postfix) with ESMTP id 03FF12BEAAA for ; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 13:20:52 +0100 (CET) Received: by tatooine.tataz.chchile.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 2473F407C; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 13:20:22 +0100 (CET) Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 13:20:22 +0100 From: Jeremie Le Hen To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <20050215122022.GZ82324@obiwan.tataz.chchile.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.7i Subject: Looking for a notebook X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 12:20:54 -0000 Hi, I'm currently looking for a cheap notebook which runs correctly FreeBSD -CURRENT. I've just purchased a Medion SIM2000, it boots up but I've also some troubles with sound & modem. Here the strange problem is that the sound card is a AC97 ALS (SiS7012) and it just outputs from headphone and the modem is a SiS7013 (Intel Winmodem) that isn't in the ports tree (while there is the LT winmodem). For the Video Card with some trick I was able to get a full 16:9 resolution like in windows but without DRI (this is an Xorg problem). Above all I'm almost surprised because I know the difficulty to work with a laptop & unix. I've tried Fedora Core 3 & Debian III but it gives me an error during boot (acpi error). So like a BSD users I feel above all lucky enough. The only suggestion I feel to give you is to wait the awake of 6.0 because it will have many changes in ACPI calls. I'm waiting too to have some tricks about my sound card :) bye Davide ----- Original Message ----- From: "bsdnooby" To: ; Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 8:32 AM Subject: All your laptops are belong to Windows. > > I'm defeated. If you return it to Best Buy and decide to pick up another laptop, bring a FreeSBIE disc with you, and maybe a Frenzy disc, to test the laptop before you buy it. I have done this a couple of times, and only once did someone even ask me what I was doing, and when I started to explain, their eyes glazed over and I just went back to testing. I ended up buying a Sager 4750V from discountlaptops.com and have been very happy, except for the first few days. The firewire controller has issues on this laptop, and 5.3-RELEASE puked when probing the fwohci. I used a Frenzy disc, which does NOT have firewire support in the kernel, and was able to boot it fine, whereas FreeSBIE (and any GENERIC FreeBSD) had firewire compiled into the install media kernel, causing me much heartache. If you are interested in more detail, check out... http://michael.gargantuan.com/sager_4750v/ HTH, have a good day. I've a laptop (Medion SIM2000) very nice... the onboard sound is an AC97 (SiS7012), the card is well known by my system (5.3STABLE) but no sound comes out from speakers... just from headphone :( while in windows is works in the right way... the strange thing is that if I don't load the snd_ich module the speaker works... it makes beep and so on when I put something like echo cde >/dev/speaker, but when I load the snd_ich module speakers are muted :( of course they work with headphone inserted :) where is the trick here?? is it a driver problem even if I don't think this is the problem?? perhaps a registry to manipulate output way ?? I really don't know... I've searched around and tried to apply a patch to it because I've heard about inverted JACK SENSE... but nothing worked 4 me... please give me a chance... thanx in advance, bye Davide From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 16 12:46:27 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 05C7E16A4CE for ; Wed, 16 Feb 2005 12:46:27 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.insoftosra.it (host-34-67.noicomnet.it [81.92.34.67]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 79BC643D49 for ; Wed, 16 Feb 2005 12:46:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from davide@sito.it) Received: (qmail 19786 invoked by uid 507); 16 Feb 2005 12:48:06 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO davide) (81.92.34.66) by 0 with SMTP; 16 Feb 2005 12:48:06 -0000 Message-ID: <02ef01c51425$854675a0$6601a8c0@insoft.it> From: "Davide Lemma" To: References: <007b01c51038$6e0bfea0$6601a8c0@insoft.it> Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 13:46:23 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180 Subject: about PCTEL winmodem X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Davide Lemma List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 12:46:27 -0000 Hi guys, I was searching a way to make my integrated modem to work... for what I know here it is a WinModem (not a Lucent), exactly an AC7013 alias ICH MiniPCI Wave Modem, I've seen that there is a version available for Linux if you know there is a port or sort of that working in FreeBSD?? thanx in advance... bye Davide From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 16 15:40:06 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 832ED16A4CE; Wed, 16 Feb 2005 15:40:06 +0000 (GMT) Received: from harmony.village.org (rover.village.org [168.103.84.182]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4FC043D2F; Wed, 16 Feb 2005 15:40:05 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Received: from localhost (warner@rover2.village.org [10.0.0.1]) by harmony.village.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j1GFdlw4071719; Wed, 16 Feb 2005 08:39:47 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 08:40:04 -0700 (MST) Message-Id: <20050216.084004.117280004.imp@bsdimp.com> To: deischen@freebsd.org, eischen@vigrid.com From: "M. You ought to try looking through the archives in that mailing list and if you feel adventurous, try implementing some of the patches right now. I suspect that FreeBSD will install smoothly on that architecture in the near future. The guys hacking out the patches have very little good to say about these computers but they are nevertheless giving it a lot of attention. I'm happy about that since my patience caused me to run out of time to return mine to HP. I am eager to see what results from all the patching. ===== If history always begins this morning, the world holds exciting surprises around every corner (241). --Ann Coulter. One was the resource problem. Changing the hw.cbb.start_memory to a different value. Then i got a problem with the mii bus failing. And that was fixed with the patch. On my IBM Thinkpad 600 I have problems with ACPI and FreeBSD 5.3 STABLE. Short list of effects: (*) acpiconf -s3 suspends the notebook for ever.=20 Only the power switch wakes up the notebook: the display flashes and then the notebook hangs. Only pressing the power switch for about one minute will turn off the Thinkpad. (*) Closing the display for suspend-to-ram does not work. The notebook only beeps two times and nothings happens (*) Typing + for suspend-to-ram does not work (see the point before this) (*) APM works fine on this notebook I hope I have described the troubles clear enough. For further questions please feel free to send an email. OK. I've fixed a number of problems in the pccard layer since 5.3-Release. How hard would it be for you to try out a newer RELENG_5 kernel? This might also be an interrupt routing problem, which can be helped by a newer kernel. On my Sony Vaio Z505 (450Mhz p2) with APM (zzz) it would suspend and wake flawlessly... but on my more recent computers, a thinkpad and more recently an Acer TravelMate 2300 - I have no luck. What happens with suspend (acpiconf -s 3) on the Acer is that it goes to sleep - and when I try to wake it up, it powers up - but the screen stays blank (off) and it never comes back. I'm wondering two things - 1) What's the general status of ACPI support - are there any docs that I can read that might give me a clue as to how far along ACPI support is? 2) Is there anything I can do to assist in getting the suspend and wake-up working? I've seen people post information and what looks like dumps for their laptops ACPI info, but I don't know what programs provide those dumps. Any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated! How do get this file on a floppy when it is a > windows .exe? DOS.EXE != Windoze.exe It's unlikely to be a Windoze executable. Get a bootable floppy. Personally, I'd use a FreeDOS floopy image, works very well for flashing DVD firmware and the like: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/bet a9sr1/disksets/1440KB/B9BOOT01.IMG Format a floppy: fdformat -v /dev/fd0 Copy the image onto it: dd if=B9BOOT01.IMG of=/dev/fd0 Mount it: mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt Delete unwanted file(s) to make space for your program, copy your .exe onto it. Umount it: umount /mnt And boot from it. If you do this often, check out the Universal Boot CD at: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ It comes with all kinds of free partition/disk/diagnostic tools and the like - even a Knoppix distro. It has a menu system, including an entire menu of DOS-based ones (it runs FreeDOS) and it's easy enough to frob your DOS utility onto a function key. Download the ISO, mount it up (on 4.x): vnconfig -c vn0 UBCD.iso mount -t cd9660 -o ro /dev/vn0 /mnt Copy the entire directory tree somewhere, add your own directories, modules, modify the menus etc. Instructions for making a bootable ISO from the new directory hierarchy with mkisofs are here: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/customize.html Get rid of the vn node after you're done by umounting it and destroying the node: umount /mnt vnconfig -u vn0 Good luck! OK. I've fixed a number of problems in the pccard layer since 5.3-Release. How hard would it be for you to try out a newer RELENG_5 kernel? This might also be an interrupt routing problem, which can be helped by a newer kernel.
