X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 13 Mar 2005 04:02:26 -0000 Hello list, I've recently acquired an old Gateway 2000 SOLO 2100 laptop. FreeBSD 4.11 works fine with pccard and my Lucent Technologies Orinoco Wireless card (wi driver). However, I recently decided to upgrade to FreeBSD 5.3 and discovered that the "NEWCARD" stuff doesn't even detect my pccard slots. I managed to build a new kernel with OLDCARD (I removed all of the PCMCIA stuff from the GENERIC config (OLDCARD includes the config when you use it), stripped all of the network drivers out other than wlan and wi, and added the following to rc.conf): pccard_enable="YES" pccard_mem="DEFAULT" pccard_ifconfig="blah" This is identical to my old configuration on FreeBSD 4.11. When I booted the new kernel, the pccard devices were detected and the card insertion was also detected (in both slots). However, it doesn't attach to the wi driver. It acts as if it doesn't recognize the card or something. I even tried using the pccard.conf from my 4.10 laptop that detects the card without problems and it still failed to recognize the card (or, if it does recognize it, it does not indicate it is so because it does not fire up the wi driver). I've even tried to load the if_wi module manually, but this of course won't work because its already in the kernel. Anyone have any idea what this problem might be? However, the most recent release (unichrome-X-r30.tar.gz) gets a segfault on at least some machines (e.g. mine). Following the advice of their mailing list, I retrieved the most recent file from their CVS repository, and the core dump was fixed! Hurray! Here are the steps I took: 1. cd /usr/ports/x11-servers/xorg-server 2. make deinstall 3. make patch This created a populated source tree into which I could substitute the files from sourceforge. 4. cd work/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers 5. mv via via.bak 6. mkdir via 7. (copy the files from the sourceforge CVS tree into the new via directory) 8. make Makefiles 9. cd ../../../../../../.. 10. make reinstall I now had a working X server. -- George From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Mar 13 19:50:05 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9814016A4CE for ; Sun, 13 Mar 2005 19:50:05 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mailhost.m5p.com (209-162-215-52.dq1sn.easystreet.com [209.162.215.52]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 25CED43D4C for ; Sun, 13 Mar 2005 19:50:05 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from george@m5p.com) Received: from m5p.com (ssh.m5p.com [IPv6:2001:418:3fd::fb]) by mailhost.m5p.com (8.13.2/8.13.2) with ESMTP id j2DJo4xB000578 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-DSS-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=OK) for ; Sun, 13 Mar 2005 11:50:04 -0800 (PST) Received: (from george@localhost) by m5p.com (8.13.2/8.13.2/Submit) id j2DJo4f0006821; Sun, 13 Mar 2005 11:50:04 -0800 (PST) Date: Sun, 13 Mar 2005 11:50:04 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <200503131950.j2DJo4f0006821@m5p.com> From: george+freebsd@m5p.com To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.49 on IPv6:2001:418:3fd::f7 Subject: USB Keyboard; USB Wireless Ethernet X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 13 Mar 2005 19:50:05 -0000 1. I've learned today that my laptop is indeed in "passive" mode 99% of the time. This is great when it's on battery, but I'd really prefer the fan to be 'active' when I'm on A/C so I can run my CPU at full speed. Here's the linux equivalent of the above sysctl's: # cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM0/cooling_mode cooling mode: passive # cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM0/trip_points critical (S5): 97 C passive: 92 C: tc1=5 tc2=4 tsp=600 devices=0xd7f6e580 Notice that 'active' isn't mentioned! Using the advice at the bottom of the acpi.sf.net page, found here: http://acpi.sourceforge.net/documentation/thermal.html I did this: # sh -c 'echo -n "90:0:40:40:0" > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM0/trip_points' # cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM0/trip_points critical (S5): 90 C passive: 40 C: tc1=5 tc2=4 tsp=600 devices=0xd7f6e580 This makes absolutely no difference though. The fan still doesn't come on until it hits 80C, and it's all passive. > If such line has some sensible values in it and you would like to change > them one way or another, you will have to extract your ASL (see ACPI > section of the handbook), find something that looks like > > Method(_AC0) { Return (KELV(0x4B)) } I don't have anything like that. cat /proc/acpi/dsdt > dsdt.aml ./iasl -d dsdt.aml # grep -i _AC dsdt.dsl Exit 1 Oh well, thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try posting on the linux acpi list and maybe read up on the dsdt spec. The A30p dsdt compiles with a few errors and warnings too, so it couldn't hurt to fix those while I'm at it. It appears as USB umass device and works well. Usbdevs output is here: Controller /dev/usb3: addr 1: high speed, self powered, config 1, EHCI root hub(0x0000), Intel(0x0000), rev 1.00, device uhub4 port 1 powered port 2 powered port 3 powered port 4 powered port 5 addr 2: high speed, self powered, config 1, USB Memory Stick Slot(0x014d), Sony(0x054c), rev 1.10, device umass1 port 6 powered Only problem is that card-reader itself toes not detach USB device on flash removal. So if I change card to another card of different size it is not detected and da0 device still has old geometry. 'camcontrol rescan' does not helps. For previous Sony notebook stick reader was attached to ATA bus and I workaround this problem with atacontrol detach/attach. How to do same with USB-attached umass device, I mean how to rescan this device for physical geometry. I found only solution - kldunload umass && kldload umass, but it is ugly. And can be problem in case when another umass device connected. -- Vladimir B. (Well, you could probably write a program to suck input from both of them and feed it to a vkbd instance, but that would be a pain). Adding a keyboard mux is on the todo list for the project (and on my personal one as well), but so far no one has found the time to do so. > 2. The first time I booted with 1 gig, things seemed ok. I started KDE, and then used the "zzz" command to put it to sleep while I myself called it a night and went to sleep. Then in the morning, I found it would not wake up. I eventually was able to get it to power off using the power button (which got acpi to power it down). Then when I brought it back up, there were file system errors, which I resolved with fsck. The following attempt to start kde ended up with the system rebooting itself when the intro sound would ordinarily play. When it rebooted, I thought that perhaps the kernel could stand to be rebooted, so I rebuilt the kernel I was running from up until then. This did not solve the problem. I have not been able to start up kde since. This machine dual-boots winxp and freebsd 5.3. Oddly enough, XP still boots just fine, so I don't suspect the memory. Is there something that I should have done to prepare freebsd for a ram upgrade? Should I plan on reinstalling the OS now? I'm not sure what is causing these problems starting kde. The closest to success I've gotten thus far was when kde came up and kicked out an "arTs" error (though it then proceeded to crash afterwards). thank you Lee From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Mar 15 16:26:39 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9F1F516A4E5 for ; Tue, 15 Mar 2005 16:26:39 +0000 (GMT) Received: from [212.112.40.199] (212-112-40-199.lidnet.net [212.112.40.199]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 51D1243D46 for ; Tue, 15 Mar 2005 16:26:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from pkg@absaroka.eryn-lasgalen.org) Received: (qmail 6925 invoked by uid 1000); 15 Mar 2005 16:26:35 -0000 Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 17:26:34 +0100 From: Par Leijonhufvud To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20050315162634.GJ11418@absaroka.eryn-lasgalen.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.5.1i Subject: Dell Inspiron 1150 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 16:26:39 -0000 I'm considering an Dell Inspiron 1150, but I don't find much in the archives. I had this issue a while back with my Athlon-XP box (http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2004-November/042127.html). Note that I would get instant reboots with CPUTYPE?=athlon-xp, CPUTYPE?=p3, and CPUTYPE?=p2. However, it worked fine with CPUTYPE?=k6-2. The system works fine except a wierd thing with the loader. While the system is loading the kernel it stops, and won't continue before I touch my keyboard. This has never happened to me before, and it feels like a really wierd thing. I'm not exactly sure what stage of the boot I'm talking about, but it's the point where -, |, / and \ characters keep spinning. They spin for maybe three steps and then it stops waiting for any key. Maybe a possible clue is that fdisk keeps nagging about the geometry, but I'm not aware of anything I could do about it. Anyone else experienced this before or does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of this? I even rebuilt the loader with a hardcoded CPUTYPE=i686 for sys/boot/i386/Makefile.inc and sys/boot/i386/boot2/Makefile and it STILL rebooted instantly. Is it possible GCC compiled with CPUTYPE?=athlon-xp produces bad code? I guess my BIOS writer could've been on crack, but the machine is rock solid without CPUTYPE defined so I don't think it is a hardware problem. I'm willing to debug this but I need someone's hand to hold... Never heard of any lockups there... sounds like your disk controller or something needs the nudge that pressing a key triggers. I'd check for a BIOS update and reinstall boot2 with "disklabel -B ad0". Do you have boot0 installed (i.e.k, does it ask for an F key to pick a partition)? If you do you might try setting the packet option with boot0cfg. -- Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 16 10:33:30 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A8C1C16A4CE for ; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 10:33:30 +0000 (GMT) Received: from wproxy.gmail.com (wproxy.gmail.com [64.233.184.193]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 673AA43D5A for ; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 10:33:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from remi.vallez@gmail.com) Received: by wproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id 70so2390456wra for ; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 02:33:28 -0800 (PST) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:reply-to:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=AbltDS4EmPJi5RACXIyu75bXGCatq8c8pqMlwCbI+1pLApDRyDw7ZgV9kTe+Bxm+ezoYXcL3EQZGmp7qMQo7CayGUlo79QH+DzUGV/fA5uhrsJMVFwgypnM3UA/Ucw6yqlHgY2IvnggIH/ZdAOVAl4x918NyAs3XiM+dOEJazpU= Received: by 10.54.84.17 with SMTP id h17mr2416828wrb; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 02:33:28 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.54.16.24 with HTTP; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 02:33:28 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <545f9a500503160233262eb512@mail.gmail.com> Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2005 11:33:28 +0100 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?R=E9mi_Vallez?= To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: linux-acu X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?R=E9mi_Vallez?= List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2005 10:33:30 -0000 I am studying effect of wifi on battery of laptop. Actually I realized that hotkeys(1) was adjusting the volume through SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_VOLUME - and my soundcard only responds through pcm(4) (for god knows what reason) - so I simply changed all instances of SOUND_MIXER_READ_VOLUME and SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_VOLUME to SOUND_MIXER_READ_PCM and SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_PCM in the hotkeys.c It works now ! /mich From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 17 16:38:37 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4C89916A4CE; Thu, 17 Mar 2005 16:38:37 +0000 (GMT) Received: from postal2.es.net (postal2.es.net [198.128.3.206]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1B08643D4C; Thu, 17 Mar 2005 16:38:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from oberman@es.net) Received: from ptavv.es.net ([198.128.4.29]) by postal2.es.net (Postal Node 2) with ESMTP (SSL) id IBA74465; Thu, 17 Mar 2005 08:38:36 -0800 Received: from ptavv (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ptavv.es.net (Tachyon Server) with ESMTP id B29545D08; Thu, 17 Mar 2005 08:38:35 -0800 (PST) To: "Michael L. It may work well enough for you, but it may only partially work and you may lack volume control for some sources because pcm is and input level and the volume controls should really control the output level. Take a look at the mixer(8) channels available and see if you have an "ogain" mixer. If so, this is Output Gain and does exactly what Volume does on other hardware. It is a master output level and control volume over all. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. Usually the failure mode was that the NIC address would be wrong, but there were some failure modes where it would fail altogether. I've merged many of the changes, but not all just yet... Basically, it 'locks up' when resuming with the external (proprietary) floppy drive detached, and seems to resume properly when the floppy is attached. Removing the floppy drive from the kernel doesn't seem to help, nor does removing the references to the floppy from the /boot/device.hints file. I've checked atheros source code and related 802.11 source code. But i cannot find it out. Now i am wondering if it is controlled by HAL. But since HAL is only provided as binary code, i cannot figure it out. I would really appreciate if anyone let me know which part is controlling carrier sense. Is it HAL? Thanks. I think the "reset" with power down and up again leads to an unoperable card. In my situation unloading and reloading the driver let the card work. I made some change to the pccard driver code for testing and without the reset everyging was O.K. But with 5.3-STABLE the problem seems to be solved, according to a friend of mine. Maybe updating to 5.3-STABLE also solves Your problem. -- Gruss, Thomas Wintergerst From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 19 14:24:50 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9620A16A4CE for ; Sat, 19 Mar 2005 14:24:50 +0000 (GMT) Received: from web54103.mail.yahoo.com (web54103.mail.yahoo.com [206.190.37.238]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id E0BB943D1F for ; Sat, 19 Mar 2005 14:24:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jasondr1879@yahoo.com) Received: (qmail 42935 invoked by uid 60001); 19 Mar 2005 14:24:49 -0000 Comment: DomainKeys? I have installed FreeBSD ver.5.3 (using FTP, I downloaded i386-bootONLY.iso, and i386-ver5.3.iso) onto my IBM A20m laptop. After using the boot CD, I installed FreeBSD using the Wizard-like interface, I included ALL of the available options (this may have sealed my fate). Anywhoo, everything appeared to be going fine, no errors, no warnings, then I came to reboot to complete the installation, I get the IBM screen (the one that tells you what BIOS version you have and what it is loading) this is what it says: IBM ThinkPad BIOS 4.0 Release 6.0.U Copyright 1985-1999 Phoenix Technologies Ltd. All Rights Reserved 640K System RAM Passed 127M Extended RAM Passed 256K Cache SRAM Passed System BIOS shadowed Video BIOS shadowed UMB upper limit segment address: I3P9 Mouse initalized Fixed Disk 0: HITACHI_ ATAPI CD-ROM: CD-2243 Press to enter SETUP Press to choose temporary boot device and thats it, after this screen it flashes a little, and goes blank. I have tried every function key, combined with every other key (FUNCT key, Alt key, Ctrl key, Backspace) you name it. I cannot enter setup, or view anything. I even tried using a desktop monitor, removed the hard drive and attempted to attach it to one of my desktop drive bays, it wouldn't fit using any of my existing CD, CD/RW and floppy plug-ins, although it did look like the pin patterns were the same, I didn't want to force anything. I looked all over the web, there seems to be a very serious compatibility issue with the A20m, as described here: A bug in early revisions of IBM’s BIOS on these machines mistakenly identifies the FreeBSD partition as a potential FAT suspend-to-disk partition. When the BIOS tries to parse the FreeBSD partition it hangs. I downloaded this http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4JWNTQ driver and followed the instructions, the screen is still blank, but I can hear the floppy drive working. So before I spend $$ on a new motherboard, or a "parts" laptop, can you think of another solution for me. I just wanted to try out FreeBSD. Show me some love. You can redo the install and make sure on the fdisk setup screen you hit (I think) s, the option to make the partition active, and then make sure on the later screen that asks about bootblock, make sure the install add the bootblock. I am going from memory here, there are three options: one is to do nothing, the next is to install the bootblock (I think that's what it is called) and the third is to install a boot manager. The one you want is the boot block one. There may be an easier way to do this, but since it is a new install, this may be the quickest. As for putting the drive in a desktop machine: you need a converter. they are available at most computer shops for $5 to $15. The difference is that laptop drives get power through the cable and desktop drives have a separate power connector. Just make sure you are careful to get the cable set to pin one correctly or you can possibly fry the drive. Everything is usually well marked. If this info doesn't help, send another email and I'll setup a test machine to get definite screen names and options for the above bootblock selections, but you should be able to figure out the right selections from the (rather vague) ideas in the first paragraph. -mark
