Can one or both of the > ports (e.g. this one) just not install it? The problem is that devel/p5-ExtUtils-MakeMaker is an upgrade to a component of lang/perl5*. With the current version of lang/perl5.8, we take some care that a typical p5 port does not overwrite things that are installed by perl itself, namely: - *.pm files from p5 ports go to SITE_PERL, while *.pm files from perl itself go to PERL_VER; - *.3 files from p5 ports go to ${PREFIX}/lib/perl5/${PERL_VERSION}, while *.3 files from perl itself go to ${PREFIX}/lib/perl5/${PERL_VERSION}/perl This nice separation breaks when we come to binaries and their manpages, and using the same trick as above does _not_ look like a good solution. Mind you, all this becomes a problem with a rather limited subset of all p5 ports. The best solution I can see is to rip off the "standard" perl distribution completely. Then we will have lang/perl5.X-minimal ports, and lang/perl5.X meta ports that will depend on corresponding perl5.X-minmal port and on the right p5 ports to achieve the result similar to the current "standard" perl distribution. Unfortunately, I don't think that we can get rid of all perl modules in the minimal port, and if we cannot, then we absolutely must have MakeMaker in the perl port, since this one is needed for building each and every one of the rest. Good suggestions are welcome, and I hope I was not too dense in this mail. \Anton. -- The moronity of the universe is a monotonically increasing function. -- Jarkko Hietaniemi From owner-freebsd-perl@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 25 15:34:47 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-perl@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 370DD16A4CE for ; Tue, 25 Jan 2005 15:34:47 +0000 (GMT) Received: from relay.ceti.pl (relay.ceti.pl [62.121.128.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DF13943D2F for ; Tue, 25 Jan 2005 15:34:46 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from miki@ceti.pl) Received: from tau.ceti.pl (www.ceti.pl [62.121.128.11]) by relay.ceti.pl (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35159164122 for ; Tue, 25 Jan 2005 16:34:46 +0100 (CET) Received: by tau.ceti.pl (Postfix, from userid 1920) id 5D0A9202FF3; Tue, 25 Jan 2005 16:34:46 +0100 (CET) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by tau.ceti.pl (Postfix) with ESMTP id 50CC11E70CA for ; Tue, 25 Jan 2005 16:34:46 +0100 (CET) Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 16:34:46 +0100 (CET) From: Mikolaj Rydzewski To: freebsd-perl@freebsd.org Message-ID: X-PGP-Fingerprint: B437 FB84 7507 3499 79AE 9DB5 1A2B 8256 8B12 AB02 X-PGP-PublicKey: http://ceti.pl/~miki/pubkey.txt X-Phone: +48(502)502483 X-GG: 4185132 X-nic-hdl: MR3035-RIPE MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Subject: Perl from ports and perlcc X-BeenThere: freebsd-perl@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: maintainer of a number of perl-related ports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 15:34:47 -0000 Hello, It took me quite a while to solve my problems with perlcc not working. I use perl-5.8.5 made from ports on FreeBSD 4.10 box. The reason is, that 'use.perl ports' doesn't change symlinks to perlcc and perldoc. One has to specify exactl location of new perlcc, ie: /usr/local/bin/perlcc. Is it by desing? Or maybe perlcc user group is so small, that no one notices this? ;-) Regards -- Mikolaj Rydzewski http://ceti.pl/~miki/ PGP KeyID: 8b12ab02 There are three kinds of people: men, women, and unix. This will ONLY be true for FreeBSD 5.X and FreeBSD CURRENT; the existing pollution of /usr/bin will still be performed for older versions of FreeBSD, if requested via use.perl script. In practical terms this will mean a one-time sweep of your scripts in order to convert them, in a typical case, from #! /usr/bin/perl to #! /usr/local/bin/perl. CORRECT perl-dependant ports should not be affected. In order to keep pkg-install simple, no old symlink chasing and removal will be done, although the detailed instructions will be posted in ports/UPDATING and in pkg-message for the ports. The thing is, that the whole idea of touching /usr/bin at all made sense when perl was in the base system and we needed a way to "replace" it with a version from ports. Since we don't have it in the base for quite some time, there is no good reason to continue cluttering /usr/bin with those symlinks. So this needs to be done eventually, and this seemed as good time as any to introduce this change. \Anton. -- The moronity of the universe is a monotonically increasing function. -- Jarkko Hietaniemi From owner-freebsd-perl@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 29 21:16:24 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-perl@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 46A8916A4CE; Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:16:24 +0000 (GMT) Received: from multiplay.co.uk (www1.multiplay.co.uk [212.42.16.7]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 39D5B43D2D; Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:16:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from killing@multiplay.co.uk) Received: from vader ([212.135.219.179]) by multiplay.co.uk (multiplay.co.uk [212.42.16.7]) (MDaemon.PRO.v7.2.2.R) with ESMTP id md50000930893.msg; Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:05:36 +0000 Message-ID: <011f01c50647$b05f2fc0$b3db87d4@multiplay.co.uk> From: "Steven Hartland" To: References: <20050129202425.GA56998@heechee.tobez.org> Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:15:38 -0000 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2527 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2527 X-Spam-Processed: multiplay.co.uk, Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:05:36 +0000 (not processed: message from valid local sender) X-MDRemoteIP: 212.135.219.179 X-Return-Path: killing@multiplay.co.uk X-MDAV-Processed: multiplay.co.uk, Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:05:39 +0000 cc: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.org cc: freebsd-ports@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: [HEADS UP] perl symlinks in /usr/bin will be gone X-BeenThere: freebsd-perl@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: maintainer of a number of perl-related ports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2005 21:16:24 -0000 This has a huge external impact. Wouldn't it be cleaner if there was a separate perl-symlinks package that created symlinks from /usr/local/bin/perl to /usr/bin/perl? This would make creating symlinks happen regardless of whether you install from a binary package versus installing from the /usr/ports. The following URL: http://www.googlefight.com/cgi-bin/compare.pl?q1=%23%21%2Fusr%2Fbin%2Fperl&q2=%23%21%2Fusr%2Fbin%2Fenv+perl&B1=Make+a+fight%21&compare=1&langue=us Suggests firmly that the answer to that question is yes. What worries me particularly about the proposed change is that it requires administrators to touch the scripts of their user's files as part of an upgrade -- this is not a good situation for an ISP to be put in. That or to immediately re-add the symlink on the basis that the practical reality is that (despite some limited documentation to the contrary), that's the way everyone runs perl. I have the suspicion that while removing this symlink may encourage programming cleanliness, it's going to shoot a lot of feet unnecessarily. Also, since env isn't a built-in, it means exec runs twice for every perl script, not once... I'm not convinced that having just a few (2?) symlinks in /usr/bin will "pollute" the base system, but it does save having to modify potentially thousands of scripts. I have to vote no on this. This will fundamentally break a majority of systems, for no well defined reason. The clean removal of a single symlink does not justify the pain it will create. If you want to do this in 6-CURRENT, then fine, but leave 5-STABLE alone. Think of this as the equivalent of an ABI change we doesn't happen without really good reason in STABLE. This is not a really good reason. Phil.
