Hi Michael, In fact this G4 you donated was to be used for this purpose (and others). The problem is the machine was put in a remote machine room and has since crashed. No one has been able to contact the admin due to some real-life stuff he's involved in. Thus I'm looking for an alternative to that G4 for some quick work. -- -- David (obrien@FreeBSD.org) From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Feb 13 22:36:49 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 86A4416A4CE for ; Sun, 13 Feb 2005 22:36:49 +0000 (GMT) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (trang.nuxi.com [66.93.134.19]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3FE3743D39 for ; Sun, 13 Feb 2005 22:36:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from obrien@NUXI.com) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (obrien@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j1DMaliG053134 for ; Sun, 13 Feb 2005 14:36:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from obrien@dragon.nuxi.com) Received: (from obrien@localhost) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j1DMalO8053133 for freebsd-powerpc@freebsd.org; Sun, 13 Feb 2005 14:36:47 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from obrien) Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2005 14:36:47 -0800 From: "David O'Brien" To: freebsd-powerpc@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20050213223647.GA52716@dragon.nuxi.com> References: <20050208084533.GA89688@dragon.nuxi.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20050208084533.GA89688@dragon.nuxi.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 6.0-CURRENT Organization: The NUXI BSD Group X-Pgp-Rsa-Fingerprint: B7 4D 3E E9 11 39 5F A3 90 76 5D 69 58 D9 98 7A X-Pgp-Rsa-Keyid: 1024/34F9F9D5 Subject: Re: WANTED: login on a FreeBSD/PowerPC system for toolchain work X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: obrien@freebsd.org List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2005 22:36:49 -0000 On Tue, Feb 08, 2005 at 12:45:33AM -0800, David O'Brien wrote: > I'd really like to do something about the problem with GCC on > FreeBSD/PowerPC -- problem is I don't have working system I can use to do .. > Does anyone have a login they can loan me for this work? :-) I'm touched to see the number of people offering to contribute to the 'Mini-Mac for David' fund. While the Mini-Mac is a dream-machine and I would love one, upon reflection I'm not sure it is well suited for what I need at the moment due to its lack of serial console. It really comes down to a time vs. $$ thing right now. I've spent probably 8 hours trying to get my Sun Blade100 working again after a disk crash due to ATA issues, etc...; so I can fix some things for the upcoming 5.4 release. I really don't have time like this to spend learning the nuances of Mac disk partitioning and installation. What I'm really looking for is access to a machine that means little sysadmining so I can spend the time on GCC and binutils. We are currently in our window of opportunity to fix GCC for PowerPC as Kan is currently working on importing a newer GCC into /usr/src. But I have to get my work into the FSF GCC 4.0 and 3.3-branch repos first. So far Phil Regnauld and Garance offered such access. Lets figure out which will be easiest and go with that. -- -- David (obrien@FreeBSD.org) From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 14 01:36:38 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AE1F616A4CE for ; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 01:36:38 +0000 (GMT) Received: from priv-edtnes51.telusplanet.net (outbound04.telus.net [199.185.220.223]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 078DE43D1D for ; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 01:36:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mcepeda@ualberta.ca) Received: from [192.168.0.104] (really [142.59.231.163]) by priv-edtnes51.telusplanet.net (InterMail vM.6.01.04.00 201-2131-118-20041027) with ESMTP <20050214013637.EWEX372.priv-edtnes51.telusplanet.net@[192.168.0.104]>; Sun, 13 Feb 2005 18:36:37 -0700 From: Mauro To: Joaquin Menchaca In-Reply-To: <4207AEE5.80500@finnovative.net> References: <1106542417.29481.168.camel@localhost.localdomain> <41F4ADC1.8070201@freebsd.org> <42017276.1010304@finnovative.net> <4201C54A.8090009@freebsd.org> <1107418085.4125.27.camel@localhost.localdomain> <20050206002904.GJ9350@dragon.nuxi.com> <1107656286.4131.20.camel@localhost.localdomain> <20050207045911.GA8619@dragon.nuxi.com> <1107761856.5631.29.camel@localhost.localdomain> <4207AEE5.80500@finnovative.net> Content-Type: text/plain Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2005 18:36:32 -0700 Message-Id: <1108344992.7222.39.camel@localhost.localdomain> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.0.2 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: airport estreme with Freebsd X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2005 01:36:38 -0000 I think we're entirely over looking that Broadcom's lack of even providing binary drivers, thus keeping their "proprietary" info secret, would still allow them to avert the wrath of the FCC and still allow opensource support. (I was going to rebuild it again today, but I was sidetracked by completely unrelated stuff). Since rebuilding, I have seen one case where the machine just locked up. No error messages, no panic messages, but it was not listening to the keyboard or allowing any ssh connections. It is probably obvious for me to say: I don't know what that was. One thing that I have noticed: After the machine has been running freebsd for awhile (maybe 30-minutes to an hour), the fans in the Mac-mini are going at full blast. I don't know if the machine thinks it is overheating. This happens even when I'm not doing much on it, and if I run 'top' it shows the machine is over 95% idle. If I leave the machine up in MacOS 10, the fans are only running like that after I keep it very busy for awhile. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 14 07:01:24 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1B98916A4CE for ; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 07:01:24 +0000 (GMT) Received: from liberty.onthenet.com.au (liberty.OntheNet.com.au [203.22.124.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2F98A43D46 for ; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 07:01:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Received: from [203.144.19.141] (CPE-19-141.dsl.OntheNet.net [203.144.19.141]) j1E71LnP015693; Mon, 14 Feb 2005 17:01:21 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Message-ID: <42104E32.6080200@freebsd.org> Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2005 17:07:30 +1000 From: Peter Grehan User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20041016 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Garance A Drosihn References: <41F170F1.2010701@finnovative.net> <41F3AFBD.60505@freebsd.org> <41F47300.3050406@freebsd.org> <41F47C1C.2060608@freebsd.org> <41F48BBB.3080708@freebsd.org> <41F8678A.5020005@freebsd.org> <41FDF9CF.9020900@freebsd.org> In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Mac mini and FreeBSD - fans X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2005 07:01:24 -0000 > I noticed you had commited some of the changes to the base > system, so I rebuilt my Mac-mini with the system as of about > February 8th. I suspect it might be something like the G5: there's an external microcontroller that handles the fans, and if it's not communicated with, it drives the fans up to full speed. This happens within a couple of minutes on the G5 and takes the fans up to industrial-strength vacuum cleaner volume :) Sounds like it takes a while longer on the mini. later, Peter. I booted up off the new kernel okay (in single-user mode), and then started a 'make installworld'. I then tried "call cpu_reset()", and it again paniced with the fatal kernel trap. I thought cpu_reset() was supposed to be just like hitting a hardware-reboot button... This had been running a snapshot of world from Feb 8th. This is the only machine I tried to upgrade last night, so I don't know if this is a PPC-specific bug, or a general bug. Well, I did send David a private message on how he could get to my Mac-mini. He hasn't tried it yet (but then I only told him about two days ago, and I imagine he has one of those things called a "real life", that I hear people talk so much about...). Due to some kind of problem with my most recent build for that system, the machine is running with a 1-day old "installworld", but a kernel from at least a few days earlier than that. The more recent kernel seems mighty prone to panic'ing. I'll leave my mini-mac up for David to use this weekend, assuming he has the time to poke around. I have no idea if my Mac-mini would be faster than your G4. It's 1.42-GHz, but with a somewhat slow disk and 256meg of RAM. I might try hooking up an external firewire disk to it this weekend, and see if that would improve its speed. For reference purposes, right now this Mac-mini takes about 98 minutes to do a buildworld, and 15 minutes to do a buildkernel. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 18 01:00:01 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4B9A616A4CE; Fri, 18 Feb 2005 01:00:01 +0000 (GMT) Received: from liberty.onthenet.com.au (liberty.OntheNet.com.au [203.22.124.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 855FE43D1F; Fri, 18 Feb 2005 01:00:00 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Received: from [203.144.19.232] (CPE-19-232.dsl.OntheNet.net [203.144.19.232]) j1I0xwnP031240; Fri, 18 Feb 2005 10:59:59 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Message-ID: <42153F7E.70608@freebsd.org> Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2005 11:06:06 +1000 From: Peter Grehan User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20041016 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Suleiman Souhlal References: In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: Garance A Drosihn cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: panic: mutex vm object not owned ... Is that with WITNESS/INVARIANTS still in the kern config ? Well, it does have INVARIANTS and INVARIANT_SUPPORT turned on, but WITNESS has been commented out. The only other change I made to the GENERIC kernel-config was to comment out 'NO_MODULES=true'. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu
