There's a strange glitch: connected USB devices are being recognized and attached only at startup (just after bus probing). If I disconnect a device, the kernel says "detached", and everything is fine. But if I try to attach it again, nothing happens. This behavior started after I connected and disconnected an Olympus digital camera. After I plugged it in, it was correctly recognized and attached (umass0). But I realized that I had forgotten to include "device da" in my kernel to be able to access camera's memory. I compiled a new kernel, which differs from the previous one only by this "device da" string. Since then USB doesn't detect any devices plugged at run-time. Trying to boot with older kernels (and even with GENERIC) doesn't change the situation. Any helpful thoughts are being appreciated. Eugene Rogoza. It is recognized properly. Kernel reports it as: umass0: SanDisk Corp. Cruzer Micro, rev 2.00/20.33, addr 2 da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0 da0: Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device da0: 1.000MB/s transfers da0: 500MB (1024000 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 500C) I know I shouldn't rely on the transfer field, but just a regular check of io for that disk when copying something from or to it gives me about 8kb/s. This is the output of systat. However gkrellm shows about 40kb/s. Needles to say, that this transfers are way too low, even for a non usb2.0 device. And in fact it is a usb2.0 compilant device. My usb hubs are ohci and uhci. Actually it may work without EHCI for a while (as it was with me), but further there is no guarantee. There is no string "device ehci" even in GENERIC kernel, so I guess one should be kept aware of turning this feature on either by some notice or by including that string into GENERIC configuration file in future releases. The reason for not having "device ehci" in GENERIC was something about missing support for USB2.0 HUBs. When one has got a USB2.0 HUB and "device ehci" in the kernel config file, then the HUB will probe as USB2.0, which is not supported for HUBs, else USB1.x. So maybe your problem is a reason to push support for USB2.0 HUBs? Yours --HPS
