I've built xorg 6.8.1 again which now includes said patch but the results is the same. If I enable glx and try to run glxgears the system locks solid. With 6.7 it works like a charm. I have also installed X11 and KDE 3.3.0 (both came with FreeBSD 5.3-R). I don't seem to be able to get the X server to display at a resolution higher than 800 x 600. Last time I tried to ask Matrox legal about redistributing, I got no response. However, given that these are open-source changes to an open-source driver, they would probably accept integration under the normal license if we could just get someone's attention. The reason for the HAL and this whole mess, according to them, is that they can't open-source the access to those features because of licensed IP, not because they actually want the driver to be closed. -- Eric Anholt eta@lclark.edu http://people.freebsd.org/~anholt/ anholt@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 17 00:52:03 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 72CA416A520 for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 00:52:03 +0000 (GMT) Received: from hotmail.com (bay20-f11.bay20.hotmail.com [64.4.54.100]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2C7F943D53 for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 00:52:03 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ecomeasurement@hotmail.com) Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Sun, 16 Jan 2005 16:52:02 -0800 Message-ID: Received: from 24.20.76.33 by by20fd.bay20.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 00:51:06 GMT X-Originating-IP: [24.20.76.33] X-Originating-Email: [ecomeasurement@hotmail.com] X-Sender: ecomeasurement@hotmail.com From: "H Q" To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2005 16:51:06 -0800 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed X-OriginalArrivalTime: 17 Jan 2005 00:52:02.0236 (UTC) FILETIME=[C1BDE7C0:01C4FC2E] Subject: X11 device detection issue X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 00:52:03 -0000 Hi, I've installed FreeBSD on my desktop, and it works fine. I'm trying to install XFree86, and the configuration and resulting log look fine, except for "No devices" detected, and "No screen". I checked the documentaion and FAQ's both here and on the XFree86 site, along with the archived bugs and letters, and couldn't find an answer. As I/O has not been established for the BSD machine, below I indicate the hardware and software, configuration used for the Config file, and the relevant results from the log file (the remainder of the log file indicated proper loading of everything else): XFree86 V11, Revision 0, Rel 6.6 FreeBSD 4.10 i386 Intel Pentium II 266 MHZ/256MB RAM/4 MB Video Ram Intel 440 Chipset Dell M570 VGA Monitor NVIDIA AGP Integrated Graphics Card Chromatic MPACT DVD/Display Controller I used the scripted configuration facility in sysinstall, and then verified the contents of the Config file: NVIDIA generic card chosen (suitable for AGP cards), "nv" Monitor cycling set to the industry standards given by explicitly downloading specs, and also verifying manually via the CRT: HorizSync: 31.5-82 VertRefresh 40-150 Generic VGA Default Depth 24 When running, I get the errors: "(EE) No devices detected" "Fatal server error: no screens found", followed by a breaking of the X connection and two copies of the following: "xauth: (argv):1: bad display name ":0" in "remove" command" --probably due to X crashing Now, in the log file, the NV driver is loaded, with the following final result: "(EE) No devices detected" "Fatal server error: no screens found" There are no other errors or warnings in the log file, except for an unavailable font that was skipped. I found a posting on x11@ by Jung-uk Kim about testing AGP before blaming DRI. I compiled the program and ran it, here is what I am getting: version: 0.0 bridge id: 0x7551039 agp_mode: 0x1f000217 aper_base: 0xe8000000 aper_size: 4 pg_total: 112640 pg_system: 112640 pg_used: 0 MTRR: e8000000/400000 entry.key : 4 ioctl(AGPIOC_BIND): Invalid argument Apparently, the aperture is being incorrectly probed as 4M. I have it at the smallest setting which is 32M. Is there something I can do to force it to the correct amount of memory? _______________________________________________ freebsd-stable@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-stable To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-stable-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" --Boundary-00=_J9H7B7Sl6lvRNY7-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 18 03:58:40 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 80C6316A4CE for ; Tue, 18 Jan 2005 03:58:40 +0000 (GMT) Received: from leguin.anholt.net (69-30-77-85.dq1sn.easystreet.com [69.30.77.85]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 04C3843D48 for ; Tue, 18 Jan 2005 03:58:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from eta@lclark.edu) Received: from leguin.anholt.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by leguin.anholt.net (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j0I3wcMW041308; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 19:58:38 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from eta@lclark.edu) Received: (from anholt@localhost) by leguin.anholt.net (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j0I3wbKh041307; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 19:58:37 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from eta@lclark.edu) X-Authentication-Warning: leguin.anholt.net: anholt set sender to eta@lclark.edu using -f From: Eric Anholt To: Jonathan Fosburgh In-Reply-To: <200501172115.21842.jonathan@fosburgh.org> References: <200501172115.21842.jonathan@fosburgh.org> Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 19:58:37 -0800 Message-Id: <1106020717.863.40.camel@leguin> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.0.2 FreeBSD GNOME Team Port cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Fwd: Re: Support for Sis 755 AGP WAS: Fwd: Radeon DRI problems after system upgrade X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2005 03:58:40 -0000 On Mon, 2005-01-17 at 21:15 -0600, Jonathan Fosburgh wrote: > This didn't get any responses from stable@, so I thought I would try it here. > To recap, this is an Athlon 64 system (5.3-STABLE/i386) with SiS 755 chipset. I'll get on that in the morning. In the meantime, I've tried every aperture setting (I think) but 512. For sure I've done 32, 128, and 256. Not sure if I did 64. As a temporary workaround, you migt try putting the following line: libxpg4.so.2 libxpg4.so.3 in /etc/libmap.conf and see if that works. That won't however solve the real problem - where did the ports pick up version 2 of library. Was this a clean install or an upgrade? Do you have a file libxpg4.so.2 lying somewhere on filesystem (like under /usr/local/lib/compat)? After looking at some additional archived user comments, I tried the following: 1. Changing from "nv" to generic vga in the card selection list did not help; changing to generic vesa did at least get me a scrambled screen. 2. Next, I played around with the color depth and monitor frequencies. The first number refers to the menu selection number for the horizontal frequency, and the second for the vertical refresh rate frequency. Going to 16 color with 8,3 frequency selection yielded a partial AfterStep screen (the manager I chose at configuration time), but it was squashed into the top third of the physical screen, with tiny lettering. 3. So I lowered the vertical refresh rate, with frequency selection 8,2. That made things worse --just a scrambled screen again. 4. So I went back to 3 for the vertical, and changed the horizontal: 4,3. Nothing. 5. 8,4 did not work either. 6. 6,4: nil. I assume you get the picture. I started with the best (#2, above), and then tried to tune things to get a satisfactory X-rendering of the desktop. It didn't work. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I've considered trying to configure the chipset, but I don't know if that's the problem. Thanks. Thanks for the well-functioning ports, first of all :-) I have two troubles, however. First, something, that was probably discussed on your list already. KDE can not come up unless /tmp/.ICE-unix is owned by root. Which, I suppose, is the case if one uses xdm/kdm/gdm, but not in the case of `startx'. My workaround is to create, chmod, and chown the directory from /etc/rc.local Second is more complicated. I have two-video cards setup with three monitors. One is a PCI Radeon: drm0@pci0:12:0: class=0x030000 card=0x2049148c chip=0x51591002 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'ATI Technologies Inc.' device = 'RV100 Radeon 7000 / Radeon VE' class = display subclass = VGA The other is an AGP Radeon: none3@pci1:0:0: class=0x030000 card=0x00021002 chip=0x41521002 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'ATI Technologies Inc.' device = 'Radeon 9600 XT (V350)' class = display subclass = VGA none4@pci1:0:1: class=0x038000 card=0x00031002 chip=0x41721002 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'ATI Technologies Inc.' device = 'RV360 Radeon 9600 XT - Secondary' class = display Note, that only the older Radeon-7000 is controlled by radeon.ko (drm0). The trouble is, glxgears runs fine (albeit slow) on the two monitors attached to the AGP Rafeon-9600, but hang the system, when started on the sole monitor attached to the PCI Radeon-7000... It used to work (with xorg-6.7.x) and was quite fast on this monitor. Now glxinfo outputs are the same for all screens (:0, :1, and :2), but, again, glxgears only works on the screens attached to the AGP card. The server's config and log files as well as glxinfo's output can be found at http://virtual-estates.com/~mi/xorg-mx/ Any clues? I have a question for you however - does switching to text consoles work for you? I have one radeon card (9200) with dual outputs running dualhead, and switching vtys doesn't work anymore (the switch never completes and switching back blindly hangs the machine). -- ,_, | Michael Nottebrock | lofi@freebsd.org (/^ ^\) | FreeBSD - The Power to Serve | http://www.freebsd.org \u/ | K Desktop Environment on FreeBSD | http://freebsd.kde.org From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 22 03:03:13 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2640A16A4CF for ; Sat, 22 Jan 2005 03:03:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from phred.ericx.net (phred.ericx.net [204.128.227.37]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 58B7A43D46 for ; Sat, 22 Jan 2005 03:03:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ericx@phred.ericx.net) Received: from phred.ericx.net (localhost.ericx.net [127.0.0.1]) by phred.ericx.net (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j0M33B1I001653; Fri, 21 Jan 2005 22:03:11 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from ericx@phred.ericx.net) Received: (from root@localhost) by phred.ericx.net (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j0M33A0G001650; Fri, 21 Jan 2005 22:03:10 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from ericx) Message-Id: <200501220303.j0M33A0G001650@phred.ericx.net> To: x11@FreeBSD.org From: "Eric W.
