Thanks again, Scott, You may have been right about the "silly permissions". Google offered up the man page for the Linux mkxauth command as a possible explanation of .Xauthority. Apparently, the .Xauthority files function as an authentication database and new users must have one. According to the man page: "To create a .Xauthority file, use mkxauth -c (see (1) above). mkxauth creates a .Xauthority file in the user's home directory (~/), containing a `key' or `magic cookie' for the host it was run on (the one returned by hostname(1)). If a .Xauthority file already exists, the keys are added to it. If keys for that host already exist, they are replaced." In my case, the existing .Xauthority file in my home directory was readable and writable only by root (although rperry was shown as group id) and startx complained about writing to it (unless you were root). I added rw permissions to group and was able to access my gnome session. I also found that following this action, the .Xauthority file in my home directory changed as follows: -rw------- 1 rperry rperry 109 Feb 19 09:21 .Xauthority My desktop session was basically the same except Thunderbird, my mail client, demanded I set up a new Mail account and of course, my old mail files are missing. Up to this point, I was preparing this note as a possible solution but I ran startx again as root, then tried again as rperry and it failed. Also noted that the .Xauthority file in my home directory had once again been modified. It is now back to the original as: -rw------- 1 root rperry 0 Feb 19 10:25 .Xauthority What I failed to realize was that when substituting the root identity, I used su -m which does not change (HOME) the directory. Therefore, when running startx as root, the root .Xauthority is changed in my home directory with root permissions and file identity and startx has difficulty dealing with that when rperry wants to run startx. No more su -m to run startx as root. I rarely ran startx as root in the past but when I did I don't remember ever having a problem like this. Therefore I do not offer this as a solution but it does help me somewhat. Just a little whizzed now that I have to find my Thunderbird e-mail files. Ran into several problems since then, one of which included loss of available screen resolution modes. Prior to the upgrade, I ran at 1024x768. Following the upgrade, 640x480 is the only mode available. I had a bad day with the upgrade so I assume I did something wrong/stupid. Regardless, my xorg.conf file reflects the following: Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Card0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 Subsection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection I don't believe the file changed and question where else can I look to troubleshoot the problem? Generated xorg config files with "xorgcfg" and tweaked. Driver "vesa" works but doesn't get me the resolution I need. Driver "ati", which xorgcfg provides for me to select, fails: (WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 1:0:0 could not be detected! (WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 1:0:1 could not be detected! (EE) No devices detected. If I use driver "radeon" (which xorgcfg does not provide in its pulldown) it hangs the system hard: can't quit X11, can't get a virtual terminal, can't even ping it from another machine on the same LAN segment; even the truss output was truncated before showing anything useful. It goes to black screen like it's going to put up the X11 dotty raster but never returns, just hangs. If I comment out Load "dri" the system seems to run OK, and I can use the higher resolutions which vesa does not allow. At work, it's driven by a PowerBook with DVI and it's very nice. At home, I'm driving it with DVI from a Dell with a built-in Radeon card running FreeBSD-6.1-PRERELEASE. PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)] There, it seems too sharp, too grainy, especially for text like writing code in Emacs, reading docs with Mozilla, etc. Any suggestions on how to soften it a bit? I guess I don't understand why the Mac display is comfortable but the FreeBSD Xorg display feels so irritating. Perhaps I need to use a different set of fonts or something? Thanks. If I run Mozilla and have a window partially in front of it, then move the occluding window, it leaves behind a light blue empty area in the Mozilla window; if I mouse into Mozilla it repaints. Annoying but tolerable. I fired up Firefox to see if it had the same behavior. When it started up, it wall all that same light blue, with a couple buttons or bars painted properly. Mousing around in the window caused it to paint then blue-out other buttons and such. Resizing got it to redraw itself and fill in all the blue areas. If I go to another page (e.g., wunderground.com), it starts to paint the window with the right stuff, then most of it turns that same blue, then it fills it in with the proper site graphics. Weird. In both there seem to be some areas that still have that light blue filling, like bits next to sliders and other controls, or where an blocked advertisement wants to go. I'm not seeing it in Emacs' X11 window nor in Xterms. Anyone else noticing this? Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks. I've searched lists archives and Google for this problem, but I don't seem to come up with much. Most of the posts I see are about mouse wheels not working at all after updating to Xorg 6.9.0. Mine works and scrolls up and down, but there is odd behavior when scrolling UP using the wheel. After updating to 6.9.0, whenever I move the wheel up it does scroll up like it's supposed to, however it also acts like a left mouse button is being pressed at the same time. It's somewhat hard to explain but here is an example: I'm going through my inbox in Thunderbird and I start scrolling up using the wheel to see messages. In addition to going up the list, it's also selecting all the emails that my mouse pointer happens to touch when I move the wheel up. Another example: I'm in Firefox viewing a website. I take my mouse pointer and hover over a link or a bookmark on my bookmarks bar. I keep my mouse over it and roll the wheel up once. It selects that link or button and goes to it as if I had left clicked on it. I've tried various suggestions from around the net such as playing with xmodmap, trying different values in my xorg.conf, restarting the machine, etc. This problem only has started since upgrading to Xorg 6.9.0 via portupgrade. My mouse is a Microsoft Intellimouse with left button, right button, left side button, right side button, and wheel. I have not had to work with xmodmap any in the past since it always worked with the "Buttons" and "ZAxisMapping" in xorg.conf, so I'm not sure if that 9 button info is correct. I've recently updated from 6.0-release and X.Org 6.8 (where it worked fine!) to 6.1-prerelease and X.Org 6.9. Maybe something is broken wih X300 support. The system hangs hard so it's hard to tell where it hangs. More information about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual page and on http://fontconfig.org I checked the fonts.conf file to make sure that the paths make sense. /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts does indeed contain my X11 fonts. It is listed twice in fonts.conf, is this a problem? I ran fc-cache -v to build the fonts cache. It returned a write error when running as a non-root user for the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts directory, which seems logical to me. No change. I dropped the patch file in xorg-server/files, recompiled xorg-server but it still behaves the same. I'll try experimenting with it some more tonight. I was running the DRI-disabled server for a couple hours and then it hung FreeBSD hard. I think I was going to a page in Mozilla which had some image on it. Other pages with images rendered OK, but this one hung it. So it appears commenting out "dri" isn't a complete solution. As I reported, there's no change. With both "ati" and "radeon" used as "driver", the system hangs with DRI enabled. No. Actually it was just an attempt to get 3D hardware acceleration to work correctly, which I had problems with. So I decided to give the libGL port a try. However, that conflicted with xorg-libraries and led to the reported problem. If the "WITH_MODULAR" switch is currently experimental and not expected to work correctly out of the box, then I suggest it should be marked as experimental, so people don't spend hours trying to get it to work. :-) Other than that, I think this PR can be closed. In the meanwhile, Xorg 6.9 has been released, and 3D acceleration now works fine for me with the updated i915 DRI/DRM stuff. Therefore I have no need to play with libGL and WITH_MODULAR anymore. It's an Athlon 64 system w/ Asus A8V motherboard and ATI 9600 (ATI Radeon 9600SE AQ (AGP) chipset, according to Xorg.0.log. kldstat showed radeon.ko and drm.ko were loaded. I've re-built and installed the dri-6.4.1,2 port with no change in results. Commenting out the 'load "dri"' line in the modules section of xorg.conf has made X usable again for me. I see a thread from Chris Shenton (although the subject was "Xorg 8.9.0 [sic] "radeon" with DRI hangs FreeBSD-6.1, OK without DRI") that doesn't seem to have come to a successful resolution...
