According to what I read, I feel you misunderstand the role and the range of explanations expected in the Installation chapter. While I'm there, another remark on the fact why some things should not removed from that chapter: if we think about non-english-speaking persons, when we start the translation of the Handbook the Installation chapter is most of time the first chapter to be translated and sometimes the only one (or the only one to be up to date). Well I don't say the current chapter is perfect, I just think at first it should be updated to the current installation steps then later, once it's up to date, we could see if the chapter layout needs to be changed; and a such way will be faster. -- Marc From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 7 21:37:41 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 49FB316A407 for ; Sun, 7 Jan 2007 21:37:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from simon@zaphod.nitro.dk) Received: from mx.nitro.dk (zarniwoop.nitro.dk [83.92.207.38]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0504113C468 for ; Sun, 7 Jan 2007 21:37:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from simon@zaphod.nitro.dk) Received: from zaphod.nitro.dk (unknown [192.168.3.39]) by mx.nitro.dk (Postfix) with ESMTP id 78BD12D6046; Sun, 7 Jan 2007 21:15:22 +0000 (UTC) Received: by zaphod.nitro.dk (Postfix, from userid 3000) id 386DB11434; Sun, 7 Jan 2007 22:15:46 +0100 (CET) Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2007 22:15:46 +0100 From: "Simon L. For the PDF version I'm not particularly happy with the visual output of the [amd64,i386,sparc64] like lists, though I have no idea at the moment how to do it better. Actually, it seems like part of the problem is that the hardware notes just looks odd in the PDF version. I just built the HTML version and that looks fine, so that shouldn't be a blocker. Also, whatever format is used for the lists I think it should be explained with a couple of words in the intro. So to sum up: Go for it :-). -- Simon L. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. I've written several tutorials in the past, and tutored quite a few people over the years and would like to start contributing some of my work back to the community who prompted it in the first-place. I've been an active member of questions@freebsd.org for several years now, and would like to think my contributions could help further answer a lot of questions brought about on this list. Rather than continuing to do so on my own, and in my own way... I figured why not join in and help out with some 'real' documentation. However, that being said - most of my documentation is in miss-managed HTML or ASCII tutorials, spread out across webservers here and there for various companies or clients I've worked for. I'd like very much to adopt the same type of universal format used in the FreeBSD handbook, and re-write these tutorials to be not only informative, but also consistent in their documentation conventions and general appearance. Herein lies the new challenge for me; what documentation tools are everyone using to generate documents the likes of the FreeBSD FAQ and Handbook? From what I understand it's SGML, (a new language to me - but no fears there), but what authoring tools are out there; what's best to use? What's easiest to get along with, and is there a collection or package one can utilize for stylesheets, templates, etc? Are indexes and HTML output generated by hand, or manually? etc... So, long story short - where do I get started; any good tutorials, tools, templates reccomended for SGML documentation? Something along the lines of 'if one were to submit a section to the handbook, what tools/format should one do so in?' Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated. The FreeBSD Documentation Primer[1] is a good place to start. The tools used are mainly the DocBook DTD and well known sgml tools, all available via the ports system. There is the port "textproc/docproj" (a meta-port which installs all requir= ed tools). It is described in the FreeBSD Documentation Project Primer (aka as fdp-primer, see the link below). > So, long story short - where do I get started; any good tutorials, > tools, templates reccomended for SGML documentation? I recommand reading the FDP-Primer (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/) and to visit the website of the FreeBSD Documentation Project (http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/). These two sources should cover most of your questions. J. The examples for ipnat rdr rules look like so rdr dc0 0/32 port 80 -> 10.0.10.25 port 80 But as I found out the hard way, this doesn't work. The 0/32 syntax is wrong, it should be 0.0.0.0/0. I believe that FreeBSD should do it's level best to have a complete list of contributors which acknowledge their work, regardless of the partial release of the "BSD advertising clause" granted by the Regents. If you don't advertise, you are in compliance with the "BSD advertising clause". Does the FreeBSD project actually advertise? Does it advertise specific components under a 4-clause BSD license by "features or use" in particular? Anyway, with regard to this tool, are you looking for help to write one, or test it? :-) You mentioned something about a NetBSD tool; is it in ports? Otherwise, a few minutes with shell commands gives a reasonable starting point: > find /usr/src -print0 | xargs -0 fgrep -hC 3 "All advertising materials mentioning features" | fgrep -A 1 "software developed by" | grep -v "4. It's not huge but the contribution section of the FreeBSD page says to suggest any mistakes no matter how small. Sorry if I have not gone about this in the correct way. In the project model handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/dev-model/book.html There is a very slight typo in paragraph 1 of chapter 1. It reads /"A project model is a means to reduce the communications overhead in a project. As shown by [Brooks, 1995 ], increasing the number of project participants increases the communication in the project exponentionally. FreeBSD has during the past few year increased both its mass of active users and committers, and the communication in the project has risen accordingly. This project model will serve to reduce this overhead by providing an up-to-date description of the project."/ The third sentence /"FreeBSD has during the past few year"/ should most likely read "FreeBSD has during the past few years". Once again, my apologies if I did this the wrong way. I'd like for us to have two new pages. The first is for advertising clause compliance. That's what the tool does, kinda. it needs a little refinement to deal with a couple of special cases and to change its output from troff to sgml. btw, what is advertising? nobody knows... Another tool is needed to get the copyright notices, regularize them and produce another list. This tool will produce a second page called copyrights so we can have a complete list of all copyright statements. Thias does not include the license terms. To be really anal-retentive, I suppose a third tool is needed to rip the entire license from every file and create a monster file with them all... My immediate goal is total automation of the first. This tool requires some hand-touch > ups after the fact... Right, OK, I see what it is doing. It's got a useful set of alternate forms of the "clause-3" phrasing as Perl regexes to better catch some of the variant license text, and it's smarter about figuring out where clause-3 ends by looking for the various forms of clause-4 ("The name of the author may not be used to endorse") than my simple one-liner shell script. It's also checking them against this master file (src/distrib/notes/ common/legal.common) and only generating output if the existing phase it is looking at is not already present. It seems to keep these entries in NROFF/TROFF format (".It" entries), and you have to merge the stuff it generates into the master file by hand. > :> it needs a little refinement to deal with a couple of special cases > :> and to change its output from troff to sgml. btw, what is > advertising? > :> nobody knows... > : > : The US FTC has some definitions and rules about what constitutes > : advertising: > : > : http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/dotcom/index.html > > Well, I'm more concerned about when they are triggered, since the > language is a little unclear "All advertising materials mentioning > features or use of the this software must display..." How direct does > the link have to be? It seems clear that you don't need to have a direct mention of a specific piece of software for the clause to be applicable. For example, both Microsoft and Apple use parts of IPFW in their respective products; because they advertise the security benefits of having a firewall included with the OS, both of them provide an acknowledgment to Luigi Rizzo, even though at least the former calls the firewall by another name entirely. > If I mention networking, do I have to mention > the tcp, udp, ip stacks? The ethernet driver? The vm code necessary > to have a running system at all? If one says it is a berekely unix, > does that trigger all the advertising clauses, or just the ones that > were in 4.4 BSD? Claiming that a system is based on Berkeley Unix probably does not qualify as advertising, and anything Copyright'ed to the Regents or contributors would not be a problem at this point due to the waiver of the advertising clause. The area of concern lies with code which is licensed under the old BSD license directly in the name of the author or their company rather than licensed as a contributor to BSD. Claiming that you should purchase FreeBSD because it comes with sendmail or an advanced TCP/IP network stack would obligate you to credit Eric Allman, Bill Paul, or various other folks respectively. :-) > Since the FreeBSD project doesn't do any explicit > advertising, we really don't have to do anything if we wanted to take > as narrow a reading of the above clause as possible... Agreed. Of course, FreeBSD comes with the complete sources for all software which is part of the base or contrib, including the full original license text and acknowledgment, so it's not as if the FreeBSD project is doing anything to conceal or misattribute the various authors work. > Having said that, I think it is our duty to produce the list for > others to use. If we have it, and we have links to it (maybe ok, but > how one must display the text is also vague), then we'd be good even > on a rediculously expansive reading of the phrase... I would agree that FreeBSD should make a best-effort attempt to list all of the contributors in the form their software licenses request-- ie, I believe that you ought to provide a statement like: "This product includes software developed by Bill Paul." ...with the advertising materials that make reference to the "advanced TCP/IP networking stack" of FreeBSD (presuming for the sake of discussion that such materials exist). > : ...as for the output format, I'd try to generate a plaintext list of > : acknowledgement statements drawn from the licenses, and then worry > : about converting them to SGML and from there to whatever other > output > : format is desired. > > Works for me. OK. It wouldn't be hard to modify Hubert's script to keep things in plaintext rather than in NROFF, although it might be worth pinging him to try and agree upon a direction and goals for his script rather than just hacking it for today's objective. :-) -- -Chuck From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 10 05:20:49 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: FreeBSD-doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: FreeBSD-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7DB6416A40F for ; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 05:20:49 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xuch@list.ru) Received: from mx4.mail.ru (fallback.mail.ru [194.67.57.14]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37CED13C441 for ; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 05:20:47 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xuch@list.ru) Received: from mx27.mail.ru (mx27.mail.ru [194.67.23.64]) by mx4.mail.ru (mPOP.Fallback_MX) with ESMTP id 40AF720D0E for ; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 08:04:34 +0300 (MSK) Received: from [85.21.96.105] (port=15493 helo=DAYZIKSECSRV) by mx27.mail.ru with asmtp id 1H4VdY-0000p2-00 for FreeBSD-doc@FreeBSD.org; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 08:04:32 +0300 Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2007 08:04:30 +0300 From: "][uch" X-Mailer: Voyager (v3.80.04) Professional X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: <1425047949.20070110080430@list.ru> To: FreeBSD-doc@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: Subject: Subscription request X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: "\]\[uch" List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2007 05:20:49 -0000 Subscription request to FreeBSD-doc@FreeBSD.org -- Best Regards, ][uch mailto:xuch@list.ru From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 10 09:39:58 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 92DED16A40F for ; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 09:39:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from warrenklint@gmail.com) Received: from wr-out-0506.google.com (wr-out-0506.google.com [64.233.184.237]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5A1AB13C46A for ; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 09:39:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from warrenklint@gmail.com) Received: by wr-out-0506.google.com with SMTP id i28so4425wra for ; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 01:39:57 -0800 (PST) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=XbXq3kFv4h2o3bvNZ4Sy3EYcE7aXaPVrwxeU8jbkHsd5ybb38Rxgi1C7L/o7yjlCIIPmWbwAxcTwX2U75FYfMUvYs9BJjAk2H+Xweflr/sc1u+NOsPc28fjaXvuEIJHjGYqjDVES0DSY86oqmGuokyVOWPx3EfHPwOc08PWmaek= Received: by 10.90.35.15 with SMTP id i15mr48014agi.1168420298755; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 01:11:38 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.90.106.14 with HTTP; Wed, 10 Jan 2007 01:11:38 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2007 10:11:38 +0100 From: "Warren Klint" To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Subject: Book version of the FreeBSD Handbook X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2007 09:39:58 -0000 Hello, Wouldn't it be nice if the current version of the FreeBSD Handbook was always available in book format? I was thinking a style used in www.gnu.org (a link "Translations of this page" in the header and the language list in the footer). And one of the reasons why I suggest it is that I really want to mark or get rid of outdated translations in some way (at build time, not to remove from CVS completely, of course)---if we only have a link to the translated top page only, people who usually read the translated pages are likely to fail to notice newly-added contents under the top page in the English version. If we have the language list in the footer, I think it would not be an eyesore even if it put at the bottom of (nearly) all pages as well as we would not have a trouble with overflowing the space at the page top. So I think it is better than simply making the language bar longer. The current version also has some other problems---well, is it easy to understand "zh_CN" means Chinese? Anyway, I will submit this idea in a patch later for further discussion. Any comments are welcome. -- | Hiroki SATO ----Security_Multipart(Fri_Jan_12_05_06_55_2007_932)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBFppjfTyzT2CeTzy0RAoImAKDYGUQSYd4yRA2nbKZ1Ux/ifyBEhQCgyxdt qN0VTNuYz55EC1xgZ0I/O+Y= =+0xw -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Fri_Jan_12_05_06_55_2007_932)---- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 11 21:02:45 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@FreeBSD.ORG Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1572916A407; Thu, 11 Jan 2007 21:02:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from delphij@delphij.net) Received: from tarsier.geekcn.org (tarsier.geekcn.org [210.51.165.229]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D289213C442; Thu, 11 Jan 2007 21:02:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from delphij@delphij.net) Received: from localhost (tarsier.geekcn.org [210.51.165.229]) by tarsier.geekcn.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 396DDEB2987; Fri, 12 Jan 2007 04:40:34 +0800 (CST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at geekcn.org Received: from tarsier.geekcn.org ([210.51.165.229]) by localhost (mail.geekcn.org [210.51.165.229]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id TB+8NQnmIrPg; Fri, 12 Jan 2007 04:40:25 +0800 (CST) Received: from [192.168.1.32] (unknown [61.49.187.89]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by tarsier.geekcn.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 701E1EB0E35; Fri, 12 Jan 2007 04:40:25 +0800 (CST) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; s=default; d=delphij.net; c=nofws; q=dns; h=message-id:date:from:organization:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc: subject:references:in-reply-to:x-enigmail-version:content-type; b=oAX5DzsnqBljTW60tJneEH+/dPXvJwLAAuoU15xD2lfmkAHNmgsSpxBYVxICftb6v ENFchr5X4yPU0jj6Nhp9w== Message-ID: <45A6A06A.7060108@delphij.net> Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 04:39:06 +0800 From: LI Xin Organization: The FreeBSD Project User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 (Macintosh/20061207) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Hiroki Sato References: <45A3F432.4090502@FreeBSD.org> <20070111.011416.74681391.hrs@allbsd.org> <45A63738.4010207@FreeBSD.org> <20070112.050655.02226883.hrs@allbsd.org> In-Reply-To: <20070112.050655.02226883.hrs@allbsd.org> X-Enigmail-Version: 0.94.1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-ripemd160; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="------------enigB35E2E364BE3090E44D5C269" Cc: doc@FreeBSD.ORG, cvs-doc@FreeBSD.ORG, cvs-all@FreeBSD.ORG, keramida@FreeBSD.ORG, joel@FreeBSD.ORG, simon@FreeBSD.ORG, doc-committers@FreeBSD.ORG, gabor@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: cvs commit: www/en/docproj translations.sgml X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2007 21:02:45 -0000 This is an OpenPGP/MIME signed message (RFC 2440 and 3156) --------------enigB35E2E364BE3090E44D5C269 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hiroki Sato wrote: > [-doc@ added to Cc: list] >=20 > Gabor Kovesdan wrote > in <45A63738.4010207@FreeBSD.org>: >=20 > ga> Hiroki Sato schrieb: > ga> > Gabor Kovesdan wrote > ga> > in <45A3F432.4090502@FreeBSD.org>: > ga> > ga> > > ga> > ga> For a drop-down list similarly as mirrors are listed? I also like the www.gnu.org style of presenting translated versions of a document. FWIW, this is the same as the Wikipedia style of showing a list of languages for every page, and (speaking from the point of view of a reader) it's quite easy to get the hand of something like this :) From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 12 01:11:48 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 14A6C16A40F for ; Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:11:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joel@FreeBSD.org) Received: from av9-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net (av9-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net [81.228.8.179]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD08E13C465 for ; Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:11:47 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joel@FreeBSD.org) Received: by av9-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net (Postfix, from userid 502) id 6865E3895C; Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:49:58 +0100 (CET) Received: from smtp4-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net (smtp4-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net [81.228.8.92]) by av9-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2E59C38959 for ; Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:49:58 +0100 (CET) Received: from [192.168.1.199] (81-234-214-163-no68.tbcn.telia.com [81.234.214.163]) by smtp4-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 194C937E43 for ; Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:49:57 +0100 (CET) From: Joel Dahl To: doc@FreeBSD.org Content-Type: text/plain Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:49:55 +0100 Message-Id: <1168562996.1100.42.camel@jesus.automatvapen.se> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.8.2.1 FreeBSD GNOME Team Port Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: Subject: RFC: The end of the contributors article X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:11:48 -0000 Today I decided to finally do what I've been planning to do for a long time: move stuff out of the contributors article and instead place it under www/. I started with the teams etc and you can see the results here (nowhere near finished yet though): http://people.freebsd.org/~joel/wii/team.html So, why bother anyway? Well: - Better information about what the different teams do and what their responsibilities are. Our developers are generally very confused when it comes to finding the right person to talk to, for example when requesting repo-copies or new perforce accounts etc. This will hopefully improve the situation somewhat. - The translation teams generally don't translate the contributors article since it doesn't seem to be worth the effort. Hopefully this will change now, since this can be quite important information even for non-English speaking people. - Email addresses are not completely visible anymore. - This information does not really belong in an article. - This is more up-to-date and includes a lot more teams etc. Feedback much appreciated. I'd be grateful if someone could help me out with writing more descriptions of the various teams. Also, if someone could triple-check the document for obvious mistakes, such as wrong team members on the wrong teams etc, that would be great. And where is the source file? I think issue we have for the list is that this sort of information is scattered in the doc/www tree and the scattered information is difficult to maintain (remember a case of the mirror site list). So I think the direction we should go is to have a directory for the developers, build a structure to pick up necessary information from it, and leave the maintenance to each developer (like pgpkey). Maintaining such a directory in an HTML page is not a good idea---if we have active maintainers of the list it will work, but it will not last long unfortunately. Since I could not find the source file of your proposed team.html I am not sure how this page was generated, but if it was done by hand let's take account of the maintenance issue first. -- | Hiroki SATO ----Security_Multipart(Fri_Jan_12_20_11_04_2007_932)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBFp2zKTyzT2CeTzy0RAkaRAKCmc8rUfnI1j/eA/GmmTGtwWFwcVwCgxfq9 wQIVK4ST7nzrZJ7UqoI4MCU= =Nw8V -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Fri_Jan_12_20_11_04_2007_932)---- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 13 08:53:44 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BEC0216A403 for ; Sat, 13 Jan 2007 08:53:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joel@FreeBSD.org) Received: from av9-2-sn2.hy.skanova.net (av9-2-sn2.hy.skanova.net [81.228.8.180]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5452613C448 for ; Sat, 13 Jan 2007 08:53:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joel@FreeBSD.org) Received: by av9-2-sn2.hy.skanova.net (Postfix, from userid 502) id EF140384E3; Sat, 13 Jan 2007 09:53:42 +0100 (CET) Received: from smtp4-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net (smtp4-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net [81.228.8.92]) by av9-2-sn2.hy.skanova.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id A30A6383DA; Sat, 13 Jan 2007 09:53:42 +0100 (CET) Received: from [192.168.1.199] (81-234-214-163-no68.tbcn.telia.com [81.234.214.163]) by smtp4-1-sn2.hy.skanova.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7994D37E48; Sat, 13 Jan 2007 09:53:42 +0100 (CET) From: Joel Dahl To: Niclas Zeising In-Reply-To: References: <1168562996.1100.42.camel@jesus.automatvapen.se> Content-Type: text/plain Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 20:57:28 +0100 Message-Id: <1168631848.1082.19.camel@jesus.automatvapen.se> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.8.2.1 FreeBSD GNOME Team Port Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: RFC: The end of the contributors article X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2007 08:53:44 -0000 Fre 2007-01-12 klockan 10:43 +0100 skrev Niclas Zeising: > On 1/12/07, Joel Dahl wrote: > > Today I decided to finally do what I've been planning to do for a long > > time: move stuff out of the contributors article and instead place it > > under www/. > > > > I started with the teams etc and you can see the results here (nowhere > > near finished yet though): > > > > http://people.freebsd.org/~joel/wii/team.html > > > > So, why bother anyway? My guess is that developers looking for this kind of information will probably click on the "Developers" link when visiting FreeBSD.org. This won't change anytime soon. A long time ago, I tried a similar cleanup, which is why we have our current setup today. Originally we had two more documents covering this information, and I tried to fill up the article, but fell short. I can't remember why, I think someone whined to me and I told them to do it themselves. Or perhaps I just got busy with something else. Can't remember. Regardless, I'm glad to see someone picking up where I had left off. This won't change anytime soon. Yes, I know. I do not doubt if your activity would change. The matter I am concerned about is simply moving the contributors list to an HTML page would not help to reuse/centralize such scattered information (for example, we have some duplicated information in pgpkeys-*.sgml and the committers-guide, too). To me, your proposed change is to update the list (yes, this is great. thanks a lot!) but there is no obvious reason to move all of the related information in the source file to the www tree. jo> - This information does not really belong in an article. Could you elaborate this? As mentioned in the previous mail, I think this information should be in an independent database file, not belong in either article or an HTML page in the www tree. -- | Hiroki SATO ----Security_Multipart(Sun_Jan_14_01_57_51_2007_090)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBFqQ+PTyzT2CeTzy0RAjjcAJ9mJoRdDeBcEYIWXZOmJwxj9rmoGACeJomM mjaoxc9fd7jWuPS+KPo/040= =0ACe -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Sun_Jan_14_01_57_51_2007_090)----
