I've been trying to build a FreeBSD system for about a week now and I'm struggling with the level of detail in the handbook/manual. I'm not a techo-newb; at 47 years old I've been in the loop since I built my first computer aged 19 (1979) and I'm a Communications Engineer now but even with all this experience It's still not easy. Can I help please? (I do have some fair experience as a Technical Author). Thanks Andy. If you have ideas for small changes, typo fixes, better clarity for a small section, etc.; then send-pr is your friend. If you have ideas for larger scale work, you probably want to run them by this list first so that we can give it a sanity check. hth, Doug -- This .signature sanitized for your protection From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 12 11:06:28 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 105E116A402 for ; Mon, 12 Mar 2007 11:06:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [69.147.83.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EBD1713C458 for ; Mon, 12 Mar 2007 11:06:27 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (linimon@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id l2CB6RgA064185 for ; Mon, 12 Mar 2007 11:06:27 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from linimon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id l2CB6Pnm064180 for DOC; Mon, 12 Mar 2007 11:06:25 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 11:06:25 GMT Message-Id: <200703121106.l2CB6Pnm064180@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: linimon set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: FreeBSD doc list Cc: Subject: Current unassigned doc problem reports X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 11:06:28 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. I think I fixed the source of the problem and it should be fixed on the web site after the next complete web build which happens within 24 hours. (If anyone else is intersted in the souce of the problem: The web build was using ports/INDEX which isn't updated anymore.. it's now using INDEX-6.) -- Simon L. The easiest way to do this is by running sysinstall as root, choosing Configure= , then Distributions, then src, then sys. " But my experience has been that before perfoming this operation make operation didn't started and show a "dont know how to make" message. My intuition told me that also the "base" of the "saurce" should be added. I tryed it an it worked! I believe that the third parragraph should be writte= n like this: "*Note:* If there is *not* a /usr/src/sys directory on your system, then th= e kernel source has not been installed. The easiest way to do this is by running sysinstall as root, choosing Configure, then Distributions, then sr= c, then sys AND BASE. " I'm quite sure this is the proper answer but since I'm new to this someone experienced should check this out! Cheers. _________________________ Francisco J. Well, I also had this feeling at first (especially since I tend to trust UPDATING in these matters) but it is not so. I know this because I have tried the variant you suggested first and found out fairly quickly that the firmware did not load. :-) This was on iwi, btw, but I do not think this matters. With the variant in the man page, it works 1A. I specify the var in /boot/loader.conf. And the var name starts with "legal" not "license" in both cases. Your first point about required kernel modules stands however :-) -- Regards: Szilveszter ADAM Budapest Hungary From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 16 21:36:35 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D8B5116A403; Fri, 16 Mar 2007 21:36:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from maxim@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [69.147.83.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AEBD013C45D; Fri, 16 Mar 2007 21:36:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from maxim@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (maxim@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id l2GLaZDL012165; Fri, 16 Mar 2007 21:36:35 GMT (envelope-from maxim@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from maxim@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id l2GLaZBM012161; Fri, 16 Mar 2007 21:36:35 GMT (envelope-from maxim) Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2007 21:36:35 GMT From: Maxim Konovalov Message-Id: <200703162136.l2GLaZBM012161@freefall.freebsd.org> To: dsanderson@panasas.com, maxim@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/110012: MONCONTROL(3) function signatures do not agree with sys/gmon.h X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2007 21:36:35 -0000 Synopsis: MONCONTROL(3) function signatures do not agree with sys/gmon.h State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: maxim State-Changed-When: Fri Mar 16 21:35:28 UTC 2007 State-Changed-Why: Fix from HEAD merged. You have to do a "make" before you can do a "make lint". After that they will be there. I use the following toolchain when building my docs: # make clean && make && make lint && make install > The last error may be related, but I don't know the DocBook format > so I can't really understand the problem. Hm. In this case it is indeed related. The inc-files are missing. So you get an error message. Normally such a message would only tell you where you can find the error in the document (for example a typo). In your example it would be in the file "handbook/book/eressources/chapter.sgml" on line 1736 and in column 9. But in this case there is no error in this file. If the inc-files exist, this error will not occur. Just build the handbook with the above toolchain and everything should be fine. J.
