I've been using them under FreeBSD 4.x for a long time, and i think I have used them with FreeBSD 5.x as well (however, I couldn't find any evidence of that). Recently, I tried them in a FreeBSD 6.2 machine (6.2-release) and the card is detected (with some strangeness) but doesn't work. I tried them in another laptop, but the problem is still the same. Here is the dmesg output from a 6.2-stable machine booting with this card inserted: Feb 19 21:20:19 kg-jobbpc3 kernel: ed1: at port 0x300-0x31f irq 11 function 0 config 7 on pccard1 Feb 19 21:20:19 Very few newer laptops do BIOS based suspend to disk. It's moved to the OS in Windows, so manufacturers don't waste money doing it any other way. Several people have talked about it and a couple have promised to work on it, but I have not seen anything real. The archives contain some suggestions from jhb (I think) on how to get started, but it's not trivial. > * No WiFi Get a cheap Atheros mini-PCI card. It is supported on the T42 BIOS and works well on FreeBSD. Much cheaper then a new laptop. Mine is: > "AR5212 Atheros AR5212 802.11abg wireless" IBM programs their own pci device id in the cards they sell. It's well-known how to do this yourself for any Atheros card. Then you just pass the true device id into the hal and everything will work fine. Someone was talking about adding support to hints to enable this sort of "aliasing" outside the driver. A colleague is using another T42 (but with built in WiFi), and recently upgraded to 6.2. I'll check and see if he's had any problems with suspend/resume since upgrading. I have no specific apic settings in device.hints, the psm settings are: hint.psm.0.at="atkbdc" hint.psm.0.irq="12" hint.psm.0.flags="0x2000" I recall having to add the flags entry, the others are probably defaults. > In /boot/loader.conf: > | acpi_video_load="YES" # Load the ACPI video extension driver > | hw.psm.synaptics_support="1" # Thinkpad Mousefix My loader.conf contains: snd_ich_load="YES" hw.ata.atapi_dma=1 hw.acpi.reset_video=0 kern.maxfiles=25000 radeon_load="YES" > and the usually acpi_ibm module loaded by if i'm running on battery. I don't have an acpi_ibm module on this machine (at least, "locate acpi_ibm" shows nothing). I am also grateful for Sam L & others' efforts on ath driver & related infrastructure. Forgive me if I do not know names of people who have contributed to the wireless work in FreeBSD. In order to use already available Intel 2200BG card (iwi driver), in IBM Thinkpad T42, I ha(d|ve) to assign a particular IP address which basically confine[ds] me to the home network (where I can be sure that the address will not be in conflict with those offered via DHCP). In any case, please remember (note to self, really) to check all your firewalls including MAC restrictions on both router & wireless unit, not only ipf rules, before thinking of writing to the list about dhclient getting no love or wpa_supplicant going in endless loop in vain. Here is some information about the card (MAC addresses obfuscated for whatever good that does) ... dmesg: pcib2: requested memory range 0xc0214000-0xc0214fff: good pcib2: matched entry for 2.2.INTA (src \\_SB_.LNKC:0) pcib2: slot 2 INTA routed to irq 11 via \\_SB_.LNKC pcib2: cardbus0 requested memory range 0xc0240000-0xc024ffff: good found-> vendor=0x168c, dev=0x001a, revid=0x01 bus=3, slot=0, func=0 class=02-00-00, hdrtype=0x00, mfdev=0 cmdreg=0x0000, statreg=0x0290, cachelnsz=8 (dwords) lattimer=0xa8 (5040 ns), mingnt=0x0a (2500 ns), maxlat=0x1c (7000 ns) intpin=a, irq=11 powerspec 2 supports D0 D3 current D0 ath0: memory 0xc0240000-0xc024ffff irq 11 at device 0.0 on cardbus0 ath0: Reserved 0x10000 bytes for rid 0x10 type 3 at 0xc0240000 ath0: Reserved 0x1 bytes for rid 0 type 1 at 0xb ath0: [MPSAFE] ath0: bpf attached ath0: Ethernet address: 00:17:3f:xx:yy:zz ath0: bpf attached ath0: bpf attached ath0: 11b rates: 1Mbps 2Mbps 5.5Mbps 11Mbps ath0: 11g rates: 1Mbps 2Mbps 5.5Mbps 11Mbps 6Mbps 9Mbps 12Mbps 18Mbps 24Mbps 36Mbps 48Mbps 54Mbps ath0: mac 7.8 phy 4.5 radio 5.6 ath0: Use hw queue 1 for WME_AC_BE traffic ath0: Use hw queue 0 for WME_AC_BK traffic ath0: Use hw queue 2 for WME_AC_VI traffic ath0: Use hw queue 3 for WME_AC_VO traffic ath0: Use hw queue 8 for CAB traffic ath0: Use hw queue 9 for beacons pciconf -lv: ath0@pci3:0:0: class=0x020000 card=0x701d1799 chip=0x001a168c rev=0x01 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Atheros Communications Inc.' class = network subclass = ethernet ifconfig ath0 (& caps): ath0: flags=8847 mtu 1500 inet 192.168.2.102 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255 ether 00:17:3f:xx:yy:zz media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect mode 11g (OFDM/48Mbps) status: associated ssid holy-cow3 channel 11 bssid 00:14:bf:aa:bb:cc authmode WPA privacy ON deftxkey UNDEF TKIP 2:128-bit TKIP 3:128-bit txpowmax 36 bmiss 7 protmode CTS burst roaming MANUAL bintval 100 ath0=783ed0f - Parv --
