Which external IDE-to-USB hard drive enclosures (caddies, cases) would you recommend? Does anyone here use an Icy Box IC-351U with FreeBSD? What chipset is it based on? I've been searching for information on a reliable supported chipset with decent performance in an enclosure that does not overheat easily, but sadly haven't found the answers I need, therefore any recommendation from personal experience will be welcome. Thank you. G. I used the detailed information you provided to search for chipset details and it seems that at least IB-251U and IB-270U are based on the Cypress 7C68300A-56PVC chipset, so the 3.5" units like the IB-351U are probably based on the same chipset. Device(0x6830) reveals that it's a Cypress xx6830xx chipset based bridge, but Is there a way to find out the exact chipset ID (Cypress 7C68300A-56PVC) of a connected bridge under FreeBSD? Could you tell me what kind of read/write performance you get with and without the Icy Box enclosures you mentioned? Thank you. G. I haven't done any tests of read / write performance. I use these diske for testing various versions of various operating systems (mainly *BSD) on various machines I have. In that area, I haven't noticed that the external disks are any slower than the internal disks in the machine. It has an option to act as a USB mass storage (instead of attempting acivesync). When I tried it, it first got recognized by umass and then it immediately panicked my system. >From messages: kernel: umass0: ASUS Generic Mass Storage, rev 2.00/0.00, addr 3 kernel: da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0 kernel: da0: < > Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device kernel: da0: 1.000MB/s transfers kernel: da0: 1952MB (3998720 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 248C) >From panic (typed from memory): umass0: Invalid CSW: tag 7 should be 8 (da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Synchronize cache failed, status == 0x0, scsi status == 0x4 I googled up several reports of similar and not so similar panics. Here's a small overview that is not directly related to a question that I really want to ask: 1. Invalid CSW problems where a signature is wrong, I see that WRONG_CSWSIG umass quirk is recommended for that; 2. Invalid CSW problems where a tag is wrong and the values are very different, I see that one person attempted to cure that with a new hand-rolled quirk to simply ignore the mismatch; 3. Invalid CSW problems where a tag is wrong and the difference is exactly one. I don't know if there is anything special about that, but it looks the most interesting of all the cases. In some cases but not all "Invalid CSW" comes together with "Synchronize cache failed" and DA_Q_NO_SYNC_CACHE scsi_da quirk is recommended for that. So I attempted the latter quirk and it helped me! But there is one not good thing about the way I did that - I used wild cards ("*") for all three of vendor, product and revision. This is because they all appear to be empty/unset. This is shown in both kernel messages and by camcontrol devlist and by camcontrol inquiry. I am not sure if there are any risks of applying the quirk to all possible da devices, there will be only umass ones in my case, but I still would like to do something more specific to the device in question. Will empty patterns work ? I mean if I put "", "", "" entry into the quirk array. Actually, I can test this myself soon, but not today. Thank you. Thank you for bearing with me. To reiterate: I was trying palm/uppc-kmod on amd64 6.2 with standard USB stack. attach routine had the following line: err = usbd_set_config_index(dev, UPPC_CONFIG_INDEX, 1); where UPPC_CONFIG_INDEX is defined to 1. It failed with: kernel: ucom0: failed to set configuration, err=STALLED kernel: device_attach: ucom0 attach returned 6 My only change was from _index to _no and then it started to work. Sorry it has taken a little = while to get back to you. I have been camping in Ontario, Canada with = very intermittent internet access.=20 =20 I have tested it with an 8830, 8100, and an 8703e but nit with = the 8700 so far. I'll have to look around work and I'm sure I can dig = up an 8700 to test with. =20 Are you sure that it is charging at 500mA rate without the = do_charge routing in there? You can check this with the 'usbdevs -v' = command. It should show 500mA power rate. The problem with the = Blackberries is that they do not tell the USB bus to turn on the 500mA = charge until you enable it on the device. Then the device disconnects = and reconnects to the buss with the higher charge rate enabled. That = might be why you are seeing it detach and reattach. =20 =20 It gets even harder with the "pearl" type Blackberry. I'm not = yet sure what models have the "pearl" features in them but it seems like = it was added for a removable storage card. The 8100 (the real pearl), = 8800, and the 8830 all have this feature. When these devices connect to = the buss, they id themselves as a pearl type blackberry. The driver then = needs to turn on the high charge rate and tell them to go into dual = mode. The dual mode allows them to charge and also expose the memory = card to the umass USB driver so it can be mounted.=20 =20 There is still one bug that I am tracking down and that is in the = way the umass device is handling the memory card. The blackberry = exposes the memory card to the umass device right away but doesn't let = it use it until the user types in there password on the blackberry. The = umass device does like this tries to repeatedly query the card. Once = you type the password in then everything seems to be OK. I'm sure it's = just a matter of setting up the right QUIRKS string in the umass driver = but I haven't yet had a chance to start working on this. =20 Any more feedback or testing is always welcome. =20 --- Kirk ________________________________ From: Craig Boston [mailto:cb@severious.net] Sent: Thu 8/9/2007 3:26 PM To: Kirk Davis Subject: Re: (Please test) New blackberry (uberry) driver. So it appears that on the 8700 at least, the only change from the OpenBSD version that is necessary to enable 500mA charging is changing UBERRY_CONFIG_NO from 0 to 1. Mine is an 8700c, but I'm pretty sure the 'c' just indicates vendor branding. > Are you sure that it is charging at 500mA rate without the do_charge > routing in there? Aha, it seems that the command that was sent to the blackberry by your version of the driver stays in effect for a while even after the cable is disconnected. When I first reverted back to the OpenBSD driver, it used 100mA with config 0 and 500mA with config 1. Now that I've power cycled the blackberry, it uses 100mA on both configs. > Then the device disconnects and reconnects to the buss with the higher > charge rate enabled. That might be why you are seeing it detach and > reattach. Yes, I suspect that the 8700 unconditionally detaches after receiving the command to enable 500mA charging, so I was getting into a loop when it reattached and the command was sent again. I think what needs to be done is detect the power setting on the bus and avoid sending the command again if it's already 500mA.
