When there are special rules of capitalization, it's a bit easier to type &dtrace; than spend a bit of time to grep through the docs to look for ``established tradition''. I would probably prefer something like a &dtrace; entity. If it is a registered symbol or a trademark of Sun, it may even make sense to add it to `doc/share/trademarks.ent' to take advantage of the DSSSL-magic that add a (TM) marker to the first instance of the "DTrace™" string. So, if you just want to add quotation marks around a text, not for emphasizing it, using is the right way. -- = | Hiroki SATO ----Security_Multipart(Wed_Nov_19_05_16_19_2008_661)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (FreeBSD) iEYEABECAAYFAkkjIpMACgkQTyzT2CeTzy2OcgCfVk0G4BYGwSJcB0RkkvkJyh+D vlYAn0KNy3JHghSf5thhrxyOhaF/gjhQ =wRsf -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Wed_Nov_19_05_16_19_2008_661)---- From owner-cvs-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 18 20:30:04 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: cvs-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 335981065672; Tue, 18 Nov 2008 20:30:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marc@blackend.org) Received: from abigail.blackend.org (ns0.blackend.org [82.227.222.164]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 788968FC13; Tue, 18 Nov 2008 20:30:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marc@blackend.org) Received: from gothic.blackend.org (gothic.blackend.org [192.168.1.203]) by abigail.blackend.org (8.13.4/8.13.3) with ESMTP id mAIKU2V4093733; Tue, 18 Nov 2008 21:30:02 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from marc@abigail.blackend.org) Received: from gothic.blackend.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by gothic.blackend.org (8.14.3/8.14.1) with ESMTP id mAIKU115001254; Tue, 18 Nov 2008 21:30:01 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from marc@gothic.blackend.org) Received: (from marc@localhost) by gothic.blackend.org (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id mAIKU194001253; Tue, 18 Nov 2008 21:30:01 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from marc) Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2008 21:30:01 +0100 From: Marc Fonvieille To: Giorgos Keramidas Message-ID: <20081118203001.GB1030@gothic.blackend.org> References: <200811090424.mA94OlN6087438@repoman.freebsd.org> <20081109084551.GB1058@gothic.blackend.org> <87hc6gbz3t.fsf@kobe.laptop> <20081109192507.GB1030@gothic.blackend.org> <87k5bc4ovw.fsf@kobe.laptop> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <87k5bc4ovw.fsf@kobe.laptop> X-Useless-Header: blackend.org X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.18 (2008-05-17) Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org, doc-committers@freebsd.org, Chin-San Huang , cvs-doc@freebsd.org, cvs-all@freebsd.org Subject: Re: cvs commit: doc/share/misc docbook.css X-BeenThere: cvs-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: CVS commit messages for the doc and www trees List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2008 20:30:04 -0000 On Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 10:37:23PM +0200, Giorgos Keramidas wrote: > On Sun, 9 Nov 2008 20:25:07 +0100, Marc Fonvieille wrote: > >> Maybe something like this? > >> > >> http://people.freebsd.org/~keramida/bsd-css/2008.11.09/css.diff > >> > >> I don't really like ``width: 800px;'' in our current stylesheet. I have no doubt about it. But I think that it's a good idea=20 using [lr]aquo; in *our* texts because: - it's easier to type than and . One of the reasons of=20 our lack of translators in our branch of FDP is that they can't just=20 type, and they have to type a lot of tags, acutes and so on. - if the upper authoriry in the Spanish (or Castillan) language says=20 that you can use both of them to add quotation marks around a text and=20 one of them is easier to type than the other one... well, you got the=20 point ;-) - The quotes that you got when using [lr]aquo; are called "latin". That=20 sounds interesting to me, as a translator to Spanish, for obvious=20 reasons ;-) I think the idea is working to match the DocBook to human languages and=20 their representation. At least that's my point. --=20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D J. What do you mean exactly by "easy to > type" and "they cannot type it"? I said "...they can't just type". Sorry for my broken English, sometimes is not the best dialectical tool. I mean that our translators would prefer just type in plain Spanish, for example using tildes and not acutes. Anyway that's not a problem, we have not so much volunteers right now and something like that wouldn't be very helpful at the moment. There is nobody to say "Hurray, the acutes are gone!". > While for alphabet I can understand > because the translator needs to type a lot of entities if we enforce > to use stuff like ´ instead of raw character, I think there is > no difference between the two (« vs ) in terms of ease. > > We must decide which should be used based on its reasonability > anyway. If having *two* sorts of quotes is more useful in the Spanish docs, then please feel free to use both. It would be a shame to force a single style of on Spanish translators if this makes their work more difficult or less fun. This sort of separation from content vs. style is the main idea behind my original thread post. If there are special ways of quoting inline text, then we shouldn't have to edit the text itself, but change a stylesheet and have it propagate the `normal' style for the particular language all over the place (whatever the precise definition of `normal' is for the selected language). I did commit a change that uses the DSSSL code suggested by Hiroki-san to the doc/el_GR.ISO8859-7/ tree. In Greek text we don't call our inline quotation marks ``latin quotes'', but they look for all intents and purposes the same. A Greek translator doesn't really have to care about what W3C or the Unicode Consortium likes calling the character itself, but it's kind of easy to remember that writing (the translated version of): Good morning, said Giorgos, and he turned off the alarm clock. will produce the right(TM) quotes around the quoted region.
