How does a buildworld -j (> 1) go ? All the way to the end :-) Seriously: I haven't done any timings yet. I'm mostly just upping the load to see how stable it is. A -j4 completes and a -j8 is in progress. If that completes I'll be doing UP vs. SMP comparisons. There's a visible speedup, so things look good. I hope to have hard data next week or so. Random notes: o It should be safe to enable interrupt delivery to all CPUs and play around with programming the TPR of the CPUs. o SMP works with 4BSD only, but raj@ just told me he has ULE support for SMP. o We should take advantage of the OpenPIC timers to driver hardclock, etc. o Cache prefetching hasn't been enabled on the AP yet. -- Marcel Moolenaar xcllnt@mac.com From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 17 03:14:28 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: powerpc@freebsd.org Received: by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix, from userid 1033) id AC20D1065677; Wed, 17 Sep 2008 03:14:28 +0000 (UTC) Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2008 03:14:28 +0000 From: Alexey Dokuchaev To: Marcel Moolenaar Message-ID: <20080917031428.GA39098@FreeBSD.org> References: <2A84850D-B205-472A-BC5B-471F2817BC7B@mac.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <2A84850D-B205-472A-BC5B-471F2817BC7B@mac.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Cc: powerpc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [AIM] SMP now working X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2008 03:14:28 -0000 On Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:05:11PM -0700, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: > All, > > I managed to have some "quality" time with my Xserve over the > weekend and the outstanding SMP problems have been resolved. > My Xserve is now happily running a SMP kernel: Most definitely cool. Create a boot.tbxi file, see below (without #s). Copy the loader from your FreeBSD install CD and the boot.tbxi to your HFS+ partition. Reboot the Mini and install FreebBSD from CD, create new file systems with sysinstall on your UFS partitions. Finish setup and reboot. On next boot enter OFW and change some settings like below: boot-device hd:2,\boot.tbxi boot-file boot.tbxi boot-command boot You should reboot after changing settings in OFW (search the web for more details on changing settings in OFW). This is straight from memory and some notes. AFAIR you can drop boot.tbxi and use loader directly - can't say for sure as I had to reinstall Mac OS for some tests on my Cubes. If someone is interested in a detailed how-to I will create one next time I install FreeBSD on my Cubes (will wait until release of 7.0 though).
