Juniper and Cisco have products based on FreeBSD. In the former case, almost all of their product line. That is why they are listed in the top section "FreeBSD is used as a platform for devices and products from many of the world's largest IT companies, including:". We don't claim anything about what OS they use as a webserver, if they even run their own webservers. Only the second list makes any claim about what operating system companies use for their web server, such as 163.com and sony.co.jp. They can be hidden behind a CDN or other issues that make it more difficult to determine. It doesn't strictly mean that the front end component is running FreeBSD. Still, if we have no evidence we shouldn't be claiming it. I don't know anything about NetEast / 163.com anyway, and am not sure how prominent of a site this really is. If it appears those two sites no longer run FreeBSD then we should remove them from this list and thank you for bringing this up. - Murray From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 21 09:23:44 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A63810656A4; Wed, 21 Oct 2009 09:23:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from brueffer@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 51A3F8FC25; Wed, 21 Oct 2009 09:23:44 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id n9L9NiUv060702; Wed, 21 Oct 2009 09:23:44 GMT (envelope-from brueffer@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from brueffer@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id n9L9NicA060698; Wed, 21 Oct 2009 11:23:44 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from brueffer) Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2009 11:23:44 +0200 (CEST) Message-Id: <200910210923.n9L9NicA060698@freefall.freebsd.org> To: frank@fstaals.net, brueffer@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, brueffer@FreeBSD.org From: brueffer@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/132193: [patch] description in the malo(4) manpage incorrect X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2009 09:23:44 -0000 Synopsis: [patch] description in the malo(4) manpage incorrect State-Changed-From-To: open->patched State-Changed-By: brueffer State-Changed-When: Wed Oct 21 11:22:50 CEST 2009 State-Changed-Why: I've committed a modified version of gavin's patch. In either case it can't write to /var/run as it starts up as the dhcpd user. If you look at the ownership of /var/run/dhcpd you'll see it is owned by dhcpd:dhcpd If you run as root, or without paranoia it will in fact create the pidfile in /var/run/ I suppose we could patch the man pages depending on the compilation options or something. The man page is straight from ISC, so it doesn't cover a lot of things, for instance the mangling that is done to run in a jail. I haven't had a chance to fully analyze the startup script (which is also FreeBSD specific of course) I suspect that the reason /var/run/dhcpd.pid isn't always used is there is code being shared that concerns the chroot option. It could be that the use case you are encountering is a bug, maybe it should be writing to /var/run/dhcpd.pid and it isn't by mistake. >> >> I suppose we could patch the man pages depending on the compilation >> options or something. >> > > No need for anything so elaborate. If you select PARANOIA from the menu when you build this port (which is the default) (or use the package) it will use /var/run/dhcpd/dhcpd.conf Could you provide me with the output of cat /var/db/ports/isc-dhcp30- server/options please? If you are using a package there won't be an options file. I'd also be interested in whatever settings you have in /etc/rc.conf that are relevant to the dhcpd so I can try and duplicate this locally. Clearly the documentation does not match actual behavior in some instances. I'd like to fix that, and I appreciate you pointing it out. If paranoia was the default, then I expect it was set for our installation - I wasn't aware of that. I thought there was a minor documentation slip, and thought it would be useful to file a report. I am not qualified to do much more than that, although I do wonder at the desirability of accepting patches to the code without requiring equivalent patches to the documentation. Sorry for butting in on matters I don't understand.
