It seems to correlate with how busy the guest is. Activity triggers this. Also, I don't see the PulseAudio option for HostDriver even though I am sure it's installed on this system. What I did: Installed from stock .iso taken from freebsd.org, installed packages gnome2, xorg and gdm. Two problems: 1. pkg_add -r keeps stalling while downloading packages from the web. I know it's not my internet connection because I never see such thing on my base system. This repeated about 15 times during above mentioned installs. I had to stop with Ctrl-C and rerun the pkg_add -r command. 2. gnome2 when it starts doesn't have mouse and keyboard. Same starting with startx and with gdm. It shows the screen that can't receive any mouse clicks or keyboard strokes. I saw the same problems with the previous versions of virtual box. I have not had time to test v4.1.2 on FreeBSD 8 as a host, but the guest additions work well with WinXP as the host and FreeBSD 8 as the guest. I think v4.1.2 even fixes a bug where the copy-and-paste between host and guest would stop working after running for hours, days or weeks. The copy-and-paste hang would even prevent FreeBSD from shutting down cleanly. For 4.1.2 you need to first update devel/kBuild which is also included in the archive. If you need to get back to an older vbox version you also have to downgrade to the old kBuild version then. http://home.bluelife.at/ports/virtualbox-cft-20110817.tar.gz -- Bernhard Froehlich http://www.bluelife.at/ From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 24 19:46:38 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 439AD1065670 for ; Wed, 24 Aug 2011 19:46:38 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from decke@bluelife.at) Received: from groupware.itac.at (groupware.itac.at [91.205.172.99]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF28F8FC0A for ; Wed, 24 Aug 2011 19:46:37 +0000 (UTC) Received: from home.bluelife.at (93.104.210.95) by groupware.itac.at (Axigen) with (AES256-SHA encrypted) ESMTPSA id 0654F6; Wed, 24 Aug 2011 21:46:57 +0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2011 21:46:37 +0200 From: Bernhard Froehlich To: In-Reply-To: <201108241820.p7OIKRBQ083605@mail.wynn.com> References: <201108241820.p7OIKRBQ083605@mail.wynn.com> Message-ID: X-Sender: decke@bluelife.at User-Agent: Roundcube Webmail/0.5.4 X-AxigenSpam-Level: 1 X-CTCH-RefID: str=0001.0A0B020A.4E55551C.0138,ss=1,fgs=0 X-CTCH-VOD: Unknown X-CTCH-Spam: Unknown Cc: emulation@freebsd.org Subject: Re: virtualbox on FreeBSD 8.2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2011 19:46:38 -0000 On Wed, 24 Aug 2011 14:20:27 -0400 (EDT), wynkoop@wynn.com wrote: > Greeting- > > I started with a virgin FreeBSD 8.2 install about a month ago and have been > trying to build /usr/ports/emulators/virtualbox-ose with no luck ever > since. > Ports were installed on the box using portsnap. Greeting- I am rebuilding now and will let everyone know if it works now that python is built with threads. I think that if the port needs python threads it should SAY SOMETHING. I spent a month on this before asking for help. Now maybe I should not have spent so much time, but the net is full of posts in various places about virtualbox not building, so I wanted to run down the already ASKED and ANSWERED before bothering people. I have seen other ports fail if a pre-req was not built according to the ports liking. I do not know how it is done, but I know it can be done. Thanks everyone and I will post my results when my build is done. -Brett From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Aug 25 20:59:57 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 18856106566C for ; Thu, 25 Aug 2011 20:59:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rnejdl@ringofsaturn.com) Received: from tethys.ringofsaturn.com (tethys.ringofsaturn.com [71.252.219.43]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C17BB8FC13 for ; Thu, 25 Aug 2011 20:59:56 +0000 (UTC) Received: from ASSP.nospam (localhost [127.0.0.1]) (authenticated bits=0) by tethys.ringofsaturn.com (8.14.5/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p7PKxtbt026329 for ; Thu, 25 Aug 2011 15:59:55 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from rnejdl@ringofsaturn.com) Received: from mail.ringofsaturn.com ([127.0.0.1] helo=mail.ringofsaturn.com) by ASSP.nospam with ESMTP (ASSP 1.9.1.1); 25 Aug 2011 15:59:54 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Thu, 25 Aug 2011 15:59:54 -0500 From: Rusty Nejdl To: Mail-Reply-To: In-Reply-To: <201108252055.p7PKtI3J001414@mail.wynn.com> References: <201108252055.p7PKtI3J001414@mail.wynn.com> Message-ID: X-Sender: rnejdl@ringofsaturn.com User-Agent: Roundcube Webmail/0.6-svn X-Assp-Intended-For-IP: 127.0.0.1 X-Assp-Passing: authenticated X-Assp-ID: ASSP.nospam (m-31430-01344) X-Assp-Version: 1.9.1.1(1.0.00) Subject: Re: virtualbox on FreeBSD 8.2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: rnejdl@ringofsaturn.com List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 25 Aug 2011 20:59:57 -0000 On 25.08.2011 15:55, wynkoop@wynn.com wrote: >> On Thu, 25 Aug 2011, Bernhard Froehlich wrote: >> >> >> Should the virtualbox port Makefile set BROKEN if Python threads >> are missing? >> > >> > No. This is a port option that is enabled per default. In big ports you end up with a big mess. Many projects have their configure to check specific features and version ranges of their requirements which usually gives you a good idea of what is wrong but vbox doesnt. So if someone wants to improve that send a patch for vbox configure to check for python threads. Split transfers are used to support 1.1 devices behind 2.0 hubs. There is no USB 2.0 Hub emulation in qemu and also no split transfer emulation in EHCI, thats why the failure. /me wonders what FreeBSD tries to do here? This triggers even without a single device connected and I can't think of a reason to use a siTD in that case ... Nevertheless qemu shouldn't fail like that. cheers, Gerd From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 26 11:52:57 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D0123106564A; Fri, 26 Aug 2011 11:52:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kraxel@redhat.com) Received: from mx1.redhat.com (mx1.redhat.com [209.132.183.28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD1368FC08; Fri, 26 Aug 2011 11:52:57 +0000 (UTC) Received: from int-mx10.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com (int-mx10.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com [10.5.11.23]) by mx1.redhat.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p7QBqvSM016635 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=OK); Fri, 26 Aug 2011 07:52:57 -0400 Received: from rincewind.home.kraxel.org (ovpn-116-18.ams2.redhat.com [10.36.116.18]) by int-mx10.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p7QBqsfV025875; Fri, 26 Aug 2011 07:52:55 -0400 Message-ID: <4E578916.1050509@redhat.com> Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2011 13:52:54 +0200 From: Gerd Hoffmann User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.20) Gecko/20110805 Red Hat/3.1.12-1.el6_1 Thunderbird/3.1.12 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Juergen Lock References: <20110815202656.GA94934@triton8.kn-bremen.de> <4E577890.5030200@redhat.com> In-Reply-To: <4E577890.5030200@redhat.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.68 on 10.5.11.23 Cc: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org, hselasky@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org, qemu-devel@nongnu.org Subject: Re: [Qemu-devel] qemu 0.15.0 testing, usb redirection, and libusb_get_device_speed() X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2011 11:52:57 -0000 Hi, > /me wonders what FreeBSD tries to do here?
