My configuration: Hardware: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, which is IGP from 780G/RS780 chipset. Software: xorg-server-1.12.4_1,1 xf86-video-ati-6.14.6 I use the official ports tree (as opposed to xorg-dev) and I have WITH_NEW_XORG=yes in make.conf. One peculiarity of my setup is that I run two X servers. And the regression is exactly about that. Until the upgrade everything worked just fine. But now if I do a direct VT-switch from one X-owned terminal to the other, then I get a significant chance of my system hanging. I see the following things when that happens. In Xorg.log I sometimes get (repeated many times): (EE) RADEON(0): Timeout trying to update memory controller settings ! (EE) RADEON(0): You will probably crash now ... In system log I sometimes see (repeated many times): kernel: info: [drm] wait idle failed status : 0xA0003030 0x00000003 Sometimes the system just resets without leaving any clues. Here is another interesting point. If first I do a VT-switch to a non-graphic (console) terminal and then to the other X terminal, there the problem never happens. I wonder what could be causing this. -- Andriy Gapon From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 9 18:40:26 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6A7CFEBD for ; Tue, 9 Jul 2013 18:40:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from yuri@rawbw.com) Received: from shell0.rawbw.com (shell0.rawbw.com [198.144.192.45]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5AAB312F7 for ; Tue, 9 Jul 2013 18:40:26 +0000 (UTC) Received: from eagle.yuri.org (stunnel@localhost [127.0.0.1]) (authenticated bits=0) by shell0.rawbw.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id r69IeP7c017923 for ; Tue, 9 Jul 2013 11:40:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from yuri@rawbw.com) Message-ID: <51DC5919.30907@rawbw.com> Date: Tue, 09 Jul 2013 11:40:25 -0700 From: Yuri User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:17.0) Gecko/20130628 Thunderbird/17.0.7 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Radeon driver regression in the upstream 7.1.0 version, please don't update xorg until the issue is fixed Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 09 Jul 2013 18:40:26 -0000 I have the laptop with Radeon Xpress 1200/1250/1270 (RS690M) chipset on which the current linux-distributed xorg is freezing (Ubuntu and Mint distros). Freezing happens after few minutes of work in graphics. FreeBSD, however, runs fine. I found that radeon driver in Linux (apt) repositories is currently newer: linux has 7.1.0 on server 1.13.3, and FreeBSD ports still have 6.14.3 on server 1.7.7 (latest X.org stable version is 1.14.1) So I believe there is some regression in the upstream version 7.1.0 and I would like to suggest abstaining from adopting any further versions from the upstream until this issue is resolved. We are currently at version 6.14.6 of the ATI driver, which is the last to not need KMS. This will be updated some time after the ATI KMS work in the kernel is completed, and possibly merged back. This means that this work is probably a year or two (at least) away. If you are adventurous, it is possible to test the ATI KMS work, see https://wiki.freebsd.org/AMD_GPU for more information. This requires you to install the xf86-video-ati-kms port, which is part of the experimental xorg repo. For more information, see https://wiki.freebsd.org/Xorg . Can you please try 6.14.5 as well, and maybe even doing a bisect of the code between a working release and a non-working release to see what causes this? I doubt upstream will accept patches, since 6.14.* is quite old at this point, but you can always try. I think it will be even easier if you have a specific revision in question that breaks. Mig is the Mach Interface Generator. Xinit is trying to build launchd (a macosx component). Adding these two lines to the ports/x11/xinit/Makefile (at line 7) seem to let it build: GNU_CONFIGURE=yes CONFIGURE_ARGS= --without-launchd I have not yet tested the resulting binary. This was discovered in a portsnap-fetch based ports tree as of about 0700 UTC, 2013-07-13. Hope this helps, and someone can push the fix. -- ADAM David Alan Martin -- Eitan Adler --047d7b34378afa54ed04e16ad803 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 X-Attachment-Id: e603174bc03eb46e_0.1 LS0tLS1CRUdJTiBQR1AgU0lHTkFUVVJFLS0tLS0NClZlcnNpb246IEdudVBHIHYyLjAuMTYgKEZy ZWVCU0QpDQoNCmlRSWNCQUFCQWdBR0JRSlI0YnQ5QUFvSkVKNHg5ckVYWkNaWG91NFFBTEVDcGJS RGtnRTF3NmJzVy9IS0doeUoNCk1ERTRjYURvZXNvY3FCdW4yZTdZcWRJVGYySkJsb3YzZXY5bTRn WTBHc05iSUZHQXJIRXlPZk5RVFFidVVyNFQNCjg1VUtnQThlWDBZWFptcWV3WHZpSVR4UzJ5NVdS WUt1THRiS0RjVHBqUmthWjlWWUZQbHdWVkpGcnJqdkQxNEoNCnFtd1dwL0FEYTNTVVB5ZERhWTQr N2FKWnBJaGpiMXlBSE1qRy9wTk1pc0NWSHFMbGt5R2JSbkxIenRjWFN5NEgNCi9PQ3NvSGR2RUlh SzNDNW4wdnlXQzJPK0hETEtGZ0JMQzgwekM5RU9OY29pMDRzMldHeXVFWVdQMDRYMzd2UnQNCjl5 OVEvSW44a3NVMUowZUo5VzYxQnpmNWRxSzJ0Wjh1S3hjUVlTSytBUzU5QjVsZHZxc21QSHdmaVVM dlhQRnMNCkZ0VTRidUVBVFRvVllhOHRpV3Z4bDBsbmJRWCt3RkswWUJweGRpYk9lOVdwaWxZYTgy QnRGL0NRVXRQM3g3MDgNCmt6MHpkbWcwR1RFRm0rdkRsM0U5WkhTTzNDS21hNWJQQUpIYkpERGll OUZKQWhoMndQQVpqN0RzMU43YUtRMEkNClpNaUMyV3htSm9jNTFaZi9sYmpqdmtkSTJ0dGl3UVRB WVhGcWR5Q1A1ejdXdEFQbUhsZXp2S05WUWhhdWU0VkgNCjgzb3JZSkFNcU5uQ1g3OVlURTVWTllL SHpETEkxWlUrSGYxdUZFTGpxUm9NZjNBTGJmVEZBVHBZaXE1bUEvNE8NCnh2cFluNitrVnVESS9R OUpiODFPK0xodDRjSmFvMWI0RTYySzVkOEFoU2N6eklWeWo2KzdsZEdxbGxINStUT0gNCkVQYWxv YlJPYXZSUFVkbmxhNSt1DQo9WFVyVQ0KLS0tLS1FTkQgUEdQIFNJR05BVFVSRS0tLS0tDQo= --047d7b34378afa54ed04e16ad803-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jul 13 21:21:54 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2C30B1C8 for ; Sat, 13 Jul 2013 21:21:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from lists@eitanadler.com) Received: from mail-ve0-x231.google.com (mail-ve0-x231.google.com [IPv6:2607:f8b0:400c:c01::231]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E22C61074 for ; Sat, 13 Jul 2013 21:21:53 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-ve0-f177.google.com with SMTP id cz10so8978389veb.22 for ; Sat, 13 Jul 2013 14:21:53 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=eitanadler.com; s=0xdeadbeef; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc:content-type; bh=VtmReT4OdDc12W6Wsr/u/NC8ZWHSguKlMUWfjRahaR4=; b=gWCMHiHPAppncYq0WsV327dZvssyWsv8d5RFLOo1RBfoqrCPCqCCWbriVL1feiiaVL VzvBvh/Ns2N40m1A6sNQGEmI7sTOsyCRqxpyykoK8XB9zpni0iqpkGgZxFThbzX+t0Cd +NNx8/S1qinZen0XmsWwbHLFDyvyaObHKu5vE= X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=google.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc:content-type:x-gm-message-state; bh=VtmReT4OdDc12W6Wsr/u/NC8ZWHSguKlMUWfjRahaR4=; b=DAOQsF0d+UgPSQup34wtwugRsBXEQFL+1XctQgCEts58ttLe4cK+5d82UKgDvmNrR3 9ZTDYAMFH2f3dDBsOpDYjTbMbZBQYAVJC/rVGfZ6OwMeOLlNUrJagCWQTC9yBAg/mu9v yfZIcIDXGCFj5InVTXXOD/oz2UiYLupRHz63bQm74j1cypeRKntslh9mo58Je9l/lP6R pHVcunM+48A1/Iz1uCP5dWO02ZgkVrpgPkJOKQXUzapmulKDtNoudbnOXGDfyrgS/I7u UWfoJaBr7d3B2JGKpf19xsTJW7grJWST0bNLK35HCrFQHj1VBTr+pLIBGva0ZqLhWAQJ H+1Q== X-Received: by 10.221.21.74 with SMTP id qr10mr26430939vcb.25.1373750513218; Sat, 13 Jul 2013 14:21:53 -0700 (PDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.220.118.206 with HTTP; Sat, 13 Jul 2013 14:21:22 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <201307131341.33492.adamartin@freebsd.org> References: <201307131341.33492.adamartin@freebsd.org> From: Eitan Adler Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2013 23:21:22 +0200 Message-ID: Subject: Re: Xinit (x11/xinit) fails build To: adamartin@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 X-Gm-Message-State: ALoCoQlLx6BIs29A8xZ4fiM9Q2VcbRhZ9SNdYEbFOKo7mfuTP+yGP2nP36zh8rg/S/3xM64N6eI8 Cc: x11@freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2013 21:21:54 -0000 + x11@ - ports@ On Sat, Jul 13, 2013 at 10:41 PM, ADAM David Alan Martin wrote: > It fails build complaining about a command "mig" not being found.
