The tar in FreeBSD's base system should be fixed (either by patching it or by importing a newer gtar, or another tar version like star, if license permits and no features are lost). It is really a shame that FreeBSD's tar cannot handle files larger than 2 Gbyte, even though our filesystem could handle them long before Linux could. Just my 0.02 Euro.
