It seems to work fine as-is, but += might be better. The www tree Makefile overrides some things in the doc tree Makefiles. This allows the web page build to be customized---the addition of the web site navigation bar on the top of the page for example. When rebuilding the web server after the hard disk failure, I changed things a bit. The FAQ/Handbook used to pick up stuff from the Makefile.inc in the www tree, but I changed it so the Makefile in the www tree explicitly passes the SGMLOPTS on the "make" command line when the FAQ/Handbook are built. This allows the FAQ/Handbook to live outside the www tree. However, I forgot the -e EUC-JP when I made the change. -john
